Bakelite was developed by Belgian-born chemist Leo Baekeland. It's one of the first plastics to be developed. It's a thermosetting resin usually used to impregnate wood (or asbestos) fibers. Fairly easy to mold and strong once set, which is why it quickly took off. It was fairly light for its strength.
Good at insulating electricity and to some extent heat.

No, but the stocks on early Czech guns (such as the ZB vz 26, 30, 30J - Samopal 23 family - Vzor 58 family- and so on) have stocks/grips/handguards made of bakelite resin pressed together with wood chips.

Infusing wood was done to increase volume at a low cost. The wood chip texture also increased strength in some cases.
Infusing asbestos was done to provide even better insulation.
There are many variations.
