Hey /k/ I've got a Russian capture K98 that I picked up not too long ago for 400 dollars. Should I restore it and if so, anything special you'd recommend?
>>
>>28269150
>$400

It better be in decent shape if you paid that much for a Russian capture.

If the gun needs a lot of work, then I would take a look at Miltech, they do some excellent restoration on milsurp firearms.

>Re-bluing

lolno.

I got it in decent shape. Metal components are in great shape, wood has seen a few better days, zero cosmoline, minimal stains. I'm satisfied.
>>
>>28269769
this may sound outrageous, but perhaps you can post some, you know, pictures
>>
>>28269150
>>28269769
If the metal is in good shape, you don't really need to do much in the way of restoration. If the wood is sound, you should be able to leave it pretty much as-is. A few bumps and bruises are character.

If, on the other hand, the laminate was de-laminating or the wood was rotting, then I'd look at a new stock.

Import marks vary over the years. Some dont have any. Some have it on the barrel, some have it on the reciever in plain sight. Some have it on the reciever under the wood line. There was a time when you could make the import marks very discrete. Different importers put them in different places

I've shot loads ranging from 154gr. Light ball Romanian surp, to 174gr new Romanian ammo, to ppu 196gr sp to 198gr Iranian ammo, to 198 gr. Ppu fmjbt to 198-200gr. NNY (also ppu) m75 "sniper" ammo. Pic related. So it can pretty much handle everything. Careful with steel case Romanian ammo. If you fire way too much in one sitting it'll have a hard time extracting, or worse, it won't seal the chamber and you'll get a blast back of particles.

Yours was made 1951. It was a part of a batch that reached 92,037 (the author Branko bogdanovic thinks it's closer to 91,986). True m48 rifles were only made for a period of 2-3(?) Years before they switched to m48a, b, bo and so forth. My m48b was made in 1957.

Last bit of the chart. If my theory is correct than your serial number should be found in the 1951 batch, however, this only holds true if the 1952 batch of serial numbers continued from 1951 and didn't begin anew. If it did begin from 0 in 1952 then we have an issue. This can be solved of course if we can find an m48 serial numbered 95,000 or above. This would confirm my idea at least.

Strip down the cosmoline and soak it in warm linseed oil several times.
Get a sight hood, a cleaning rod and a repro sling.
It's never going to be collectible but most likely it'll be a real fun shooter.
>>
>>28276827
By true m48 I mean to say that there are no deviations in the designation below the crest. If you refer to my picture somewhere above, I have an m48 marked m48a, but I call it a B. Well this is because of the fact that the factory at kragujevac aka factory #44 didn't bother designating the rifles b anymore. True m48s lost the title when they began to weld the hband as opposed to milling it, when they stamped the floor plate instead of milling it, and when they stamped the trigger guard instead of milling it. Most of these features according to the book are found in rifles produced from 1953-57. Another interesting thing about your rifle is the dash ( "m - 48" ), I've only seen m48s marked as M 48. So this prompts me to conclude that it may just be a 1951 model, due to the crudeness of the marks and the strange letter next to the serial number. I think I've seen letters on m24/47 rifles. I'm not sure about that though.

I've seen a different m48 at a local store here serial numbered 3###, it was real weird because the wood wasn't Elm or beech. It was weird grey brown wood. Walnut. Maybe? Well check this out. It was probably from the first batch of m48 rifles.
>>
>>28276973
Sweet it's good to shoot it's not worth not shooting for collecting right ? In your opinion
>>
>>28277108
Yeah man shoot away. Every m48 I've seen has a mirror shine bore. In some ways it's superior to the k98, but it doesn't fetch the same price due to increased availability and lack of major war use. Some examples were used in 90's as sniper's rifles during the Balkan wars occurring during that period (those are very collectible). Yours is just unique so don't hesitate to have fun. Although, I would advise you to get a second one as your beater.

>>
>>28276721
Is same rifle
>>
>>28281003
Well if you're referring to the wood, the elm wood seems sleeker, the grains are also not as "open" as on beech. Another thing to note, beech wood stocks look rougher on m48s for some reason. Elm stocks appear to have a reddish type wood, beech are blond.
>>
>>28281040
ah sounds like I have elm we seen too think it's a 1951 production
>>
>>28281063
Yeah. If we really want to play it safe 1950-53. But I reckon 1951 is accurate. It's not like the m48b model where all 200,000+ rifles were made exactly in 1957.

Beech stocks don't look as nice because they are more prone to damage, case in point is the k31.
Walnut k31s are usually nicer than beech, and walnuts predate beech ones. I don't remember what year the swiss changed the wood though, sorry.

I just graduated from nogunz and suddenly I don't feel like I did so well. Only the receiver and stock match numbers. The floorplate is stamped and actually and is just about the only part with bluing. I'm not even sure if the handguard matches since it's lighter than the stock. The cleaning rod was also bent like someone dropped the rifle. Did I fucked up?

$280. I do like it, and holding it makes me feel excited. Seems to function fine though I have no idea how to gauge accuracy. A bunch of copper came out when I first cleaned it.

its a milsurp rifle, its used. the handguards are almost always lighter colored on yugos, they made them out of different type of wood (teak i think). they are really reliable sturdy guns anon, you should be proud

I see, thanks.

Speaking of the bore, this is copper and not rust right? I shot surplus ammo and rinsed with water/ballistol then cleaned but noticed this the next day.

Otherwise, I guess the rifling looks alright, but there seems to be some pitting in the grooves.

We're do you live?
Did you use patches or bore snake? And or brush ?
>>
>>28282408
We're did you buy it ?

Southern California. I only used patches with hoppes and ballistol after water. Then when I noticed, I used a brush, but it wouldn't come off easily. Hoppes patches still come out blue though.

Well I'd just add a thin layer of oil
Cali's environment kind sucks for metal
It might be a bit of rust tho

No m48 was ever made with teak. That's a popular misconception.

Don't worry about those grooves, just run a few patches into her with Windex and then finish her up with dry patches.
