Ask a has-guns friend to take you to the range (offer to pay for your and his ammo) with a few guns
Have him explain the basics, and calibers, see what you like

Why do you want to shoot?
Protection? Hand gun
Sport? Watch some stuff on YouTube and see what sport you like (olympic, 3 gun, trap, etc)
Freedom? Ar15
>>
>>28267676
Read the sticky, it's full of great advice.
>>
get an inexpensive .22 caliber rifle. Its a great starting point with cheap ammo and low noise/recoil. That way you arent shelling out a lot of money to learn the basics of owning and maintaining a firearm. People are gonna say to get a mosin or SKS, however thats not the best idea. Start with something cheap that you can learn on.

Check out the ruger 10/22

I've shot once before with a friend, when I was still in high school. .22 rifle/handgun, some sort of higher caliber rifle and a 12 gauge. Not going to pretend I know what it was but I think the higher-caliber rifle was an AK variant and the shotgun was a SPAS i think? Or something like that.

And probably for sport or muh freedoms, so is an AR-15 too much for a beginner?

>>28267728
Will check it out, thanx
>>
>>28267676
Depends what you want to use it for. If your only going to have one gun then I'd either go with a pump shotgun or a .357 revolver. For a pump shotgun I recommend a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 or 590. For revolver Taurus is decent for the price. I'd rather go with a ruger gp100 but they cost about $100 more than a comperable Taurus.
>>
OP here.

Looking through the links and stickies, I'm thinking I'll start with a Ruger 10/22. My buddy has a deer camp I can shoot at so that's not a problem. Thanks for the help, appreciate it
>>
>>28267751
Ar15 is good for starting out if you know you'll stick with it (kind of expensive for a first gun)
You can get a 22 upper to save money, or a 450 bushmaster upper if you want to take out some big game
Start with a .223/5.56 upper since it's the "gold standard" of ar15 calibers
Don't worry about accessories, just have decent iron sights, a couple of magazines, a case and cleaning supplies. Spend the rest on ammo, targets, and range time
>>
>>28267851
Solid. How much does that run ya? 1500 or so?
>>
>>28267872
You can get an AR-15 for under 600 bucks sometimes. 800 bucks is easy to find.
>>
>>28268113
Yes but which ar? There are a lot of different ones to choose from at the under $1000 price point. What would you recommend?
>>
>>28267872
>>28268113

ARs can be had for $400
Good ARs will be around $800
A ruger 10/22 will be closer to $200, and ammo is cheaper, too
If you really want to keep prices low, get a 22 caliber air rifle to learn on

OP back again. Local sporting goods store has a Ruger 10/22 on sale for like $220. Is this the best way to go about it, or should I try to find a specialty guns store?
>>
>>28269200
Now's a terrible time to get into anything shooting 22lr. Prices are probably going to be garbage for a long time.
It's an overpriced round and you'd probably be better served buying a nice pellet rifle with that cash or jumping into a larger gun that's actually fun to shoot.
>>
>>28269200
>>28269501
You can still get .22LR for 6-7 cpr if you just keep an eye open. Not amazing, but still less than a third of even the cheapest steel case centerfire options. Buy a 500 round brick and you'll be set for awhile as a new shooter.
>>
>>28268140
Go for a Palmetto State Armory basic AR, just buy a complete lower at a gun shop and buy the complete upper and boom, AR15 for under $800 if you shop around. They use good milspec parts (FN barrels, IIRC) and everyone I know who has one enjoys it.

>>
>>28269501
This is wrong. .22 isn't expensive if you're not retarded about shopping.
>>
>>28269501
>actually fun to shoot
gonna second this guy
22LR just makes this FWACK kind of sound and it's just not that awesome
it's only good point is that you can get it for cheaper than every other round out there
>>
>>28267849
10/22 is an awesome gun. I love to shoot mine, ammo is cheap and somewhat plentiful as well. Get some 25 rd mags so you can magdump too.
>>
>>28267676
10/22
Any other answer is wrong.

You can find .22lr for 6 cents a round.
Gunbot.net
>>
>>28272572
I'm wrong, 8 cents. I found some for 6 cents about a month ago though.
>>
Buy everything anon, you'll end up there anyways so don't even try to fight it. In fact you should just start giving your paychecks straight to the LGS and ask for all the guns and ammo it gets you
>>
>>28267676
>very first gun
go for a .22 weapon, like 10/22 or browning buckmark for handguns

>first gun but already got some knowledge on firearm manipulation
get a 9mm for handguns, for rifles any milsurp bolt action will do it

>i don't own any firearms but i went a lot to the range with friends/family
get an AR/AK type rifle or any other semi automatic you want, for pistol you can basically buy whatever you want

i prefer to start with bolt action for rifles because it make me learn proper trigger pull and stance, for pistol i mostly learned from other people at the range.
Avoid any kind of magnum chambered rifle/pistol if you are not experienced at all, those kind of firearms got a huge recoil and if you don't know the proper stance or hand placement you'll just end up in pain.
>>
>>28272572
No you can't. Cheapest on the shitty gunbot is 9 cents a round.

Ammoseek, however, shows Federal .22lr for 7.5 cents a round: http://ammoseek.com/ammo/22lr
>>
>>28272572
that better include shipping, or it's not 6c/r
>>
>>28267676
>Any recommendations for a complete noob? Handguns/rifles, whatever.
Buy a gun that actually gets you excited when you see it and hold it.
There's lots of options, go to a gun shop and handle a bunch of things on the wall. Or start by going to an arsenal/family photo thread here if you are fairly new. Find a gun that really turns you on and ask people what X is and what it costs, and what they think of it.
I wouldn't piss around with a 22 just because someone here told you to start with it. IMO, 22lr can still be a fun pistol round, but it's not really worth it through a rifle when it's nearing half the cost of a centerfire round.
22 is too loud to casually use in the back yard vs a pellet rifle for practice, and it's still too weak to offer any major fun at a range or clay pit. Unless strictly shooting holes in paper is your idea of fun, it's not for me.
>>
>>28268165
.177 is by far better for practicing
>holds accuracy at longer ranges
>cheaper

.22 is only useful for hunting

I demand you buy a HK45 or H&K Mk. 23 because living here in Ireland I cannot buy them and my poor choice of birthplace means I have to live vicariously through people like you.

>Ar15 is good for starting out if you know you'll stick with it
>(kind of expensive for a first gun)
They used to be. But you can find a decent AR for 500-600 now. You aren't going to find anything except milsurp, low end boltguns, or .22 rifles for lower than that.
>>
Being honest, OP:

The first gun I got was a Mossberg 590A1 in 12 gauge brand new for ~$350, and two years later it's still great. Don't be scared that it's 12 gauge, as I'm 6' and weigh 130lbs and I shoot it just fine (it WILL hurt a bit the first couple times you shoot it, but afterwards you're fine).

12 gauge ammunition is literally in every place that sells ammo, and it's pretty inexpensive when you buy in bulk, not to mention it is a very versatile round that you can use for any purpose, whether it be skeet-shooting for fun, or defending yourself in your home or car.

I will concede that it should NOT be the first gun you fire. Seriously, start small, find a place that rents guns and try out a few smaller-caliber firearms before trying a shotfun.

If price is too steep, look into the Maverick 88 or the Mossberg 500 series, they're generally cheaper (a maverick can be found @ around $200 easily), but still excellent.
>>
>>28267744
But sks is a superior choice.it doesnt kick hard, recoil is managable, ammo is cheap and common, its semi auto, its easy to maintain, and best of all they can be still found for around 350 dollars.
>>
.50 African Eliminator is the best caliber to begin with.
>>
>>28277807
>Mossberg 590A1

those cost 1000$ here in sweden
comes with ghost rings and magpul... making me yell of your gun prices
>>
>>28267676
The 10/22 or the SKS is a good choice. The 10/22 has one of the biggest aftermarkets of any gun, so it's a good starting choice because you can start with a basic carbine model and upgrade it as you get better.

Mine came with just bead sights and a 5+1 capacity, which makes the barrel a bit shorter, cutting down on weight.

I got it in Florida at a Shoot Straight in Casselberry, last time I checked, they had a huge amount of other shotguns priced under $400, which is just dandy.

I'm sorry for your suffering ;_;
