Drawing while a gun is in your face is a terrible idea unless you've got shitloads of training to be quick, and that makes it just a bad idea.
But at the same time, if the mugger has any brains (A hefty assumption, I know) he'll be out of arm's reach so you can't try any fancy weapon manipulation bullshit either.

That wasn't a mugger. It was a hit on the guy (a detective) for putting some thug in prison. Detective decided he wasn't going to die alone. Can't recall if it was a relative, fellow gang member, or the guy himself after getting out of prison, but I think it was another member of the gang.
So I have a question for all ITT; if you shot a mugger and they fell to the ground would you give them medical aid? Why or why not?
I think if I was by myself I would have already sought cover and would remain until I could see I was clear and then demand to see my attackers hands. Then I'd come up and do a check for weapons and then do what I could to save him. If I was with my family be too busy getting them away from the scene to safety. I don't think I could let another American die even though he'd wronged me but I wouldn't risk myself or my family in any way.

No. You don't know if he has a knife or some other means to do you harm if you get close enough. Keep the gun trained on him preferably from cover. Make sure the police are on the way and describe yourself (where you are, clothes, any other important info to keep from getting shot).
If you aren't a trained medical professional, you might do more harm than good. Plus the asshole might have HIV or some shit. You don't want to risk exposing yourself to that. If you shot the guy, it's likely that he deserved it, so,let him reap the benefits of his poor decisions.
