I prefer a round I can use for different game. In my family we hunt a lot of different types of animals including elk and red deer.
Because of that I wouldn't use 5.56 because when I'm going after bigger animals the chances of an ethical kill go down. I actually really have a soft spot for .270, works great for elk. Not surprising given that's what it was designed for though.

For deer and elk I usually curl up under a shade tree with a good book with a good view of about four well tracked trails after spending a couple weeks prior scouting out where the trails are.
Got skunked this year, kept on jumping mountain lions near the watering holes.
For predators like bears, baiting and stalking them.
For turkeys, baiting and stalking.
For stuff like quail, gotta just startle them and get a good shot or two off into the covey.
