HD shit doesn't do any favors for modern film. In the OT, film grain and other artifacts covered up the old storm trooper costumes deficiencies and even then there are plenty of background characters with ill fitting armor. TFA has no such thing to hide behind, so there's no avoiding the costumes looking like cheap power rangers outfits. The only time it looked good was when the riot trooper was beating down mace dindu, and even that was more a result of the individual characters action making it work, rather than the armor being cool of its own merit.

To expand, scenes in A New Hope like the Death Star attack and the Millenium Falcon fighting off the TIE fighters were literally ripped shot-for-shot from WWII movies like Battle of Britain.
The reason TIE fighters have green lasers and Rebel fighters have red ones is because in real life Germans used green tracers and American/British fighters had red ones.

The Clones were the best thing in Star Wars, hands down. The TV show is really the only thing worth watching, the last half of the second movie and the first half of the third are also pretty ok. the phantom menace was cringy and the actor for anakin ruined 2 and 3. Back when the original Star Wars came out most special effects were practical effects i.e. making little scale models of everything and actually blowing them up. The effects/prop companies relied on model kits (like the Revell and Monogram ones you probably built as a kid) to pull bits and pieces from when making the movie props. Since many of these models were WW2 tanks, planes, ships, etc a lot of that carried over to the Star Wars vehicles.

I'll always prefer the drab look of the props flying around and being blown up over the CGI, but this is just an opinion. Granted the detail and effects you can get now are better. But it seems like the joy has been sucked out of it. Gets hard to tell a movie from a shitty game cutscene/trailer anymore.
