So guise I'm thinking about snagging a battle rifle as my next fun purchase. What do you know about the m1a, pro cons. I know some of you are fanatics for fals and ptrs, what about them?
>>
>>28240208

>M1A

kind of expensive to buy, ~$1300, mags are kind of expensive, brownells has them for $30 i think, you might call it a dated design if youre a faggot, i guess the bedding wears out too quick for some people, some say not to fully disassemble them as not to disrupt the bedding. all in all a good rifle

>FAL
also expensive, can get a DSA FAL for about $1000 but ive heard mixed reviews, has a cast receiver which gets shit on a lot. getting a "real" FAL, like a L1A1 or an imbel or whatever is going to run you about $1500. for a surplus gun. not saying they arent worth it, they are, but thats a lot of cheddar.

>PTR
the cheapest. ~$800. pretty heavy, about 10.5 lbs loaded, some find it unwieldy, no bolt lock back, roller delayed blowback is dirty as fuck. they are reliable and accurate though, and sexy as hell. not friendly to left handed people. mags are cheap as fuck.

M1As are nice, shot that same model this morning. Really heavy, muzzle brake is sorta loud but could be worse. Lots of style/ nostalgia points. Great for ban states (CA). Super soft shooting for a 308 Great sights. If I was getting a 308 semi auto itd have to be a DPMS g2. really light, supposed to have good accuracy too not as much character as the others th>>28240394

>$1500 for a decent FAL
Yeah no, you can find a solid build on FALfiles for around $1000-$1100 fairly frequently. I got this STG-58 build (matching Steyr barrel and lower receiver, unnumbered Steyr bolt and carrier, surplus Steyr parts and an IMBEL receiver) with a Williams railed dust cover (regarded as one of the best, expensive and long out of production) and two Belgian mags for $1200.

IMBEL builds frequently go for around a grand and those are very nice and solid rifles as well.

The idea of FALs being super expensive is just plain wrong (unless ~$1100 is expensive for you, which if it is you shouldn't be looking into a semi auto .308). They're expensive if you're only looking at DSA, which you shouldn't because DSAs are really expensive for what they are. The used market is very saturated with nice FAL builds. If you're wanting an FAL go join FALfiles and keep an eye on the marketplace.

People say the PTR has bad recoil, but I think that's bullshit. shoots very nice, and it's probably the best bang for your buck when you count mags. but if you've got $3,000 sitting around I'd make sweet sweet love to a SCAR.

I literally see Imbel FAL builds going for $900-$1300 on a regular basis same for L1A1s, G1s and many others.

I woudn't pay more than that for one unless it was some kind of special snowflake, preban or came with a lot of extra shit. Maybe an all matching STG58, depending on the condition of the parts and quality of the finish.

PTR is nice and affordable. FAL is probably most durable. M14 clones are the best shooters and have the most aftermarket support.

Dunno about PTR/FAL but everything for the M14 is expensive. A used M1A starts at $1K and if it's been made since 2000 most of the parts are questionable. A used one from the '90s is your best bet, or there are higher-end M14s like LRBs anf Fultons that're $2K ish.

I own an old M1A. Good gun. Better at the range than its contemporaries, worse in the field. It's a very old (1930) design so it has more in common with prewar rifles than a FAL or G3 would. People say they're heavy but they're lighter than a lot of .308 rifles, including the FAL.

The M14 design just screams "RIFLE." It was pretty much the last military rifle build around the idea of sticking huge blocks of machined steel into huge blocks of carved wood. All the things that make it outdated also make it fun to shoot. That giant external oprod and bolt cycling back and forth every time you pull the trigger. That flash suppressor that's 4" long. Those great Garand sights.

Also, it does in fact have the shoulder thing that goes up.
>>
>>28241408
Different guy, but I use grease if the manual says to use grease, and the one that came with my M1A said use grease on parts X, Y, and Z, oil is fine for everything else. So that's what I do.

Varies a lot, just like CETMEs and pre 08 WASRs.

I got one from someone on FALfiles, but only because he's been there for years and is a reputable seller there. It's a superb rifle. That said, I wouldn't buy one from anyone that doesn't have decent knowledge of the thing and who doesn't have much feedback, unless you know what to look for yourself.

There's just too many that were butchered for me to trust. And most of the ones I've seen have looked pretty beat up and full of a mix of inch and metric parts.
>>
>>28241408
Not him, but I hear all the time about how I should use grease on my FAL. What should I use for my rifle? Don't know shit about using greases as lubricants.
>>
>>28241534
You can be cheap and use high temp red grease or use gun-specific greases.
>>
>>28241437
AR-10s are typically used in more of a DMR role whereas FALs, G3/clones were standard issue.

Obviously you could use an AR-10 for this role. It's just less common as it's the same thing as an AR-15 except heavier.

I've owned both a fal and a ptr

Ptrs are heavy cheap durable accurate rifles with one helluva kick. Ergos are shit and reloading is nightmarish at best

Fals will work all day everyday and have Ergos like it was made for your personal use. Mags are expensive, aftermarket is better than the ptr.
Fals are amazing guns but you most likely wanna hear the cons
Biggest one - the trigger. There is no aftermarket trigger, there is no trigger job. Stock triggers are horrid. My rhode fal has a 15lb sloppy ass trigger that breaks whenever it damn well pleases.

Honestly if unlimited funds ar10 or scar
If you have alot of dosh and want a history piece go m1a

If you want a gun that doubles as a acceptable dmr - ptr

But if you want a rifle with history, Ergos, aftermarket, durability to rival the kalishnikov (with about rhe same accuracy cause of the trigger) and have some money left in the bank... go for the right arm of the free world, go for the fal

Look at some of the more modern rifles,

Daniel Defense just put out their first 7.62 rifle a month ago, and its looking like one of the lightest ones out there. Weighs at 8lbs

Colt 901 is also a good option, weighs about 8.5 lbs. Can swap out the upper with any AR style upper.

Both use common magazines and nothing special snowflake.

Yes they are costly, but so are most new quality 7.62 rifles.

grease on the receiver/bolt carrier rails, and bolt carrier pin. also if you look on the rear top rail support, there are 3 bosses on the inside which can contact the bolt carrier, give these bosses, and the corresponding area on the bolt carrier grease as well.

+1, I have a 80s production Fed. Ord. M14A with the GI fiberglass stock and it's a very good all-rounder. Very light, muzzle brake significantly reduces recoil and it doesn't sound any louder then my AR.

That said I'm glad I bought it at an LGS that does warranty service on used guns they sell. It had serious problems during a /k/ meet and had to be serviced by an M14 tech in Nevada. He said the build quality was shit-tier, but the receiver miraculously has the right hardness to last forever (usually Fed Ords are either too soft or waaaaaay too hard). Things just weren't bolted on very well so he trued the barrel, realigned the sights and cleaned up some other minor fuckups. Should be good to go now.

Back in the day when I was getting babbies first battle rifle. I shouldered each rifle with my eyes closed, held it how it felt most natural, and then opened my eyes. I was looking right the the sights on the FAL, and rather off on the M14.

Both rifles are in their twilight years. If you like one of them, or both, the time to get one is now.
>>
>>28244522
If you asked my a month ago which one of those rifles to buy if accuracy was your main goal, I would have said FAL.
I have a chink M14 and with a little bit of work and reloads it does 1 to 1.5 groups all day.

However, Rex uses a FAL for his long range battle rifle, and if he uses it that means there is potential.

I have no experience with the FAL. Only the M14 and the M14 shoots aswell as it looks. I never babied it around, and take it hunting/campuing and it always hits on target. There is a ton of aftermarket support for it and you can turn it into a tackdriver or CQB styled weapon.

The FAL is cool too and I would love to own one aswell

My problem with EBR-style stocks is that the pistol grip looks like such an afterthought.

Like they designed the whole thing and then said "oh whoops, forgot the pistol grip! I'll just bolt one on.... right.... here."

You do realize if your current LoP is too short you can just get a buttpad or new stock and avoid purchasing a whole new rifle, right?

Syrupfag here. Can't speak to the G3 or FAL because b&, but my Norinco M14 shorty is the most fun I've ever had with a rifle. Out of the box it shot under 1-MOA which surprised the hell out of me (I may have just gotten lucky with QC, but yeah, I love it), and I recently discovered that you can use Archangel AA700 20-round magazines in them (last round hold-open won't work with them, but it'll cycle all day long without issue; eat a dick, E-Lander). I am slowly building it into a Canada-legal "combat rifle", and next step will be an Archangel stock and some 4x glass of some sort.

Everything in the M14's design was there by 1930. If Ordnance had let Garand use BAR mags like he wanted to and told him to use the gas system from White's trials rifle you'd have had an M14 in the early '30s.
>>
>>28253000
No it wasnt, the concept sure but there where no plans to make a box fed fully automatic combat rifle until 1945 and when the war was over r and d on the m1 system ground to a halt, only until the fal was under development in the 50s and a need to replace the m1 arose was there any need to play catch up and then the m14 was born.

I used to think of the M-14 rifle as a all around good rifle with the Nam vet relative that held it up as the greatest rifle in the war. It's just "good enough" accurate, old design with no advantage over it's battle rifle brothers in arms with multiple torture test videos of it jamming in the mud. (not just the forgotten weapons one)
You could say the Fal isn't that much better and I agree but it's still better.

I currently have a DSA early Austrian kit build, PSA AR-10 and a PTR-91. Each rifle has its own positives and negatives.

Here is my 2 cents:

FAL- I have the 21" barrel, with folding bipod and failed cover. It is heavy, heaviest out of the lot. It throws the bras about 10' straight right. It is easy to clean. Adjustable gas system. BHO. Easy controls and decent accuracy. I am getting 3" groups at 100 yards. For a battle rifle that is on par. Light recoil.

PTR- Favorite rifle out of the three. It does make a small dent on the casing but that is not why the brass is hard to reload. First off, if you can find your brass (10-20 yards at 1 o'clock) it has raised lines running lengthwise down the case from the fluted chamber. I have to use motor oil when sizing this brass and still get stuck cases. It does not lock back on an empty mag. Controls are big and easy to use with gloves. The mags are super cheap ($3-5). I know it has flaws but God damn it feels good in the hands and really fun to shoot.

AR-10 - This rifle has only been out once. It is a PSA kit rifle. 18" melonite barrel with Midwest Industries keymod rail on a blem lower. I have only had the chance to put 150 rounds through it and was impressed with accuracy 1.5-2" groups at 100 yards. The trigger pin kept walking out. It did not like brass that had been. Through the PTR. I had to mortar a few out. It is what you would expect from an AR platform in .308. I plan on getting a set of KNS anti-walk pins and seeing how the rifle works after being properly broken in. That being said it doesn't feel as robust as the PTR or the FAL. Those rifles feel like I could drag them through hell. This one is more of a bench queen. I imagine it would be fine in adverse conditions but I bought it to be a medium to long range rifle.
>>
>>28255464
You bought PSA and expected accuracy?
>>
>>28255479
It is this kit: http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-pa10-18-mid-melonite-ssk12-rifle-kit.html

Out of stock now.

Please share why you think PSA rifles are inaccurate. I imaging with the right reloads I could get 1" groups.
>>
>>28255579
Trigger pin is walking out. Better trigger would probably help, unless your that damn good.
Barrel will probably top out at 1-1.5 moa. Which is probably good enough. A better barrel with trigger could get you to submoa territory.

The rest of it is probably fine.
>>
>>28255599
I will probably end up swapping the trigger but for now the stick trigger is pretty decent. Is it common for pins to walk on .308 AR builds? It felt a little loose so I took it apart and swapped the trigger with the hammer pin and now it feels right.

I think I could get moa or sub with hand load experimentation.
>>
>>28255687
What ammo were you running before?
I've not had trigger pins walk on mine, but kns pins should make it more consistent
>>
>>28255719
Hand loads. I do a standard 45gr win 748 with a 147 grain fmj mil bullet. CCI primers on mostly LC brass. That's my basic mass production load. Works well in my FAL and PTR.
>>
>>28255828
Better bullets may do better. Depends what the barrel likes.
>>
OP ask about thoughts on M1A

>>
>>28255858
I just use them for cost per round. Cheap bulk loading 308 @$4 a box. I have some decent hornady bullets that I will try out. I wanted to break it in then start load development. I think I will use 180gr bullets for my accuracy loads.

I really love M1A/M-14 like rifles...but I wish some gun company did something fresh with them or perhaps updated the design to be more modernized so disassembly is not discouraged and maybe a dust cover to become more reliable.

I know stainless steel barrels exist, but I'd like to see a black nitrite inside and out M1A or fully stainless model to be more at home at sea or in the snow or perhaps different calibers. So far Ruger is the only company to make a 5.56 and 7.62x39 version of a M1A.

Is it possible to make an M1A with quick change barrels and dust cover?
>>
>>28261692
You have to redesign the whole action to include a dust cover/ quick change barrel. Once you do that, it will no longer look like a M14. If you wanted more corrosion resistance than parkerization, you could probably have it refinished with nitride or cerakote.

I love my cheap Norc M305, but if by some miracle G3s are legal, I would trade mine in just to have that bolt slap.

Back in the early 90's they literally went through the big book of guns and banned everything by name that looked scary or was used by a bad guy in the movies. The list was never updated so we can have Tavors, and Kel-Tec RFBs, but not the cool old stuff.

Check out m14.ca

They have tons of rail attachments and even their own stock called the blackfeather that's cheaper than the EBR.

>I eat 500 cals a day

Your body uses more than that just keeping your heat regulated.

Clearly some mistake has been made with your calculation because if you ate only 500 calories a day you would starve within a month or two.

What makes the SCAR so great?
>>
>>28243076
strictly eating more calories will literally make you gain weight.

its simple physics.

calories in minus calories used

if its a negative number you will lose weight.

if its positive you will gain weight.

conservation of energy people, its not fucking rocket surgery.

So a local funs store has a Saiga .308 for 599. Weighing this against getting a Century Arms C308 for 650.

Thoughts?

Rhodesia got 5,000 Portuguese-surplus G3s during the embargo. They were issued to reserve and police units because they had way more new R1 FALs from South Africa.
