Short answer is "no". The long answer is:
You'll need a licence, this can vary from hard to simple depending on your circumstances and state/territory. Let us know what state you're in and there's certain to be an ausfag here who can help.
If you put down "self-defense" as your reason for applying for a licence or acquiring a gun, it will bounce and you will not get any guns. None. Zero. You need to put hunting or target shooting or some other bullshit. Pretty simple.
Next up you won't be allowed to just leave it lying around under your bed. If you shoot an intruder with an unsecured gun you are liable to get fucked by the big dick of the law. If you shoot anyone for any reason you're going to have a bad time, but they'll especially frown upon you having unsecured guns. Despite that it is, technically legal to use your guns in self-defense however it'd be a legal nightmare and you'll have to fight for it.
Also Remington 870s and all other pump-action shotguns are in the super-naughty category and us simple peons are not trusted to own them. You can have:
Shotguns (other than pump-action or semi-auto)
Rimfire rifles (other than semi-auto)
Centerfire rifles (other than semi-auto)
Your state may have magazine restrictions or other silly laws in place (like NSW Revolving rifle ban or WA's Section 26b bullshit).
If you're really determined you can get a handgun.

QLD is pretty good, right up there as one of the better states to be in usually.
Handguns are a bit more work. Rifles/shotguns you could probably get within a month or so. Handguns will take at least 6 months and you have to attend minimum 6 shoots per year to keep your handguns. You're limited to 10 rounds also. Handguns require being kept in a safe like all other guns but you don't have to disassemble them or take the firing pin out. Ammo can be stored in the same safe, just not in the same compartment, as long as there's some kind of locked door between them you're fine. Most safes come with an ammo compartment that it's fine to use.
Nobody will charge you for holding a firing pin but I wouldn't walk around advertising it as it is probably technically illegal knowing this county.
Probably just go for rifles/shotguns first, then handguns later. It's a bit daunting at first but it's really not too hard to get started.

You can an 870 in Australia but it's hard, you basically either need to be a primary producer or some other legitimate commercial reason (ie, pest extermination).
Bolt actions are easy to get, just join a shooting club.
