I don't think it gets the credit it deserves. In reality, getting shot fucking hurts and very few hits are insta-kills. Carrying a little auto like a Beretta Bobcat or something is fine for nearly all defensive situations. It's small, effective, easy to control.
Still, I'd just as soon (and I do) carry a .38 special snubbie, if I had to choose.

lets say you're hiking in the alaskan mountains and all of a sudden a snow leopard charges from its cover towards you two.
you draw the .25 -> shoot your friend in the leg -> run as fast as you can.
its a guaranteed kill by a single shot in the leg. 9mm cant do it, 45.ACP cant do it and not even a .50 BMG round may fail to kill someone when it hits their leg.
so yeah, a .25 can be as lethal as a 50mm BMG round. you just have to be a master of shot placement and situational opportunism
