What about automatic rifleman in USMC? I heard that they're doing away with SAM-R marksman rifles, so M27 IAR is going to be both machine gun and DMR in one. It's not too ass-heavy, you can spray and pray or try to be american sniper.

Its not an MOS, its a billet. Not even a billet honestly. You just get issued an M27 and have to carry like 20 extra mags and do the same shit any other rifleman would do except you have fun mode as an option, and you will never use it except on a range and probably only once or twice. And we havent had squad marksmen in almost a decade. Sniper platoon sends a guy or two on each patrol to fill the role.

You do 0331 and 0311 shit and ocaisionally get to fire a TOW or JAV at something if they need it.
I spent my enlistment firing all of the machine gun systems, doing dismounted 0311 shit, got to shoot some missiles, and even jumped in on a mortar line and dropped a few on some taliban shitheads (I just prepped and dropped em down the tube, an actual mortarman did the math and aiming n shit)
0352 and 0351 are the most technical and interesting.
0341 is a fuck ton of math and mortars is literally all you do
0311 and 0331 are the least skilled, never pick up, and typically never crosstrain (except 0311's sometimes fuck around with 240's but thats about it)

You dont get to choose anyways.
You enter infantry school as 03xx, 1 month in the instructors choose what weapons MOS you get based off of ASVAB shit, and who hasnt fallen out of any hikes or PT sessions depending on how many slots they need to fill. Then you spend a month learning your weapons MOS and re-doing the 5, 10, and 15 kilometer hikes except with your weapon system. While the 0311's learn basic MOUT shit that everyone is going to learn when they get to the fleet anyways, then yall meet back up and do the 20k final hike but you get to carry a weapons system on top of all your regular gear.
Point is, you wont get to choose your specific MOS.

Nothing is guaranteed, but they do ask for volunteers. Not enough volunteers then they'll pull by asvab scores.

I've never heard of a person with infantry contract not getting their 03 MOS, you're confusing MOS for billet or duty station I think.

You are correct, you are still an 03, you just dont do 03 shit.
Its usually reserved for the boots nobody can get to quit being shitbags though.
Its not COMMON to send 03's to headquarters company but it sometimes happens.
Theres also FAPs, where they send guys to be range coaches or gate guards, but thats typically for guys with just enough time on thier contract to be expected to work, but not enough to make the next deployment. Its also a way to get rid of people the company or battalion doesnt want to deal with.

I was a 31 wayyyyy back in 02-06. 0311s are the back bone of the infantry (duh) and desu if you choose 0331 your are probably going to end up in an line (rifle) company attached to a rifle platoon. However, if you end up in a Weapons company as a 0331 you are going to be riding around with a any one of the three "guns".
So do what you feel, but a word of advice, when it comes time for the Sniper Platoon indoctrination event, you sign up for that shit, and give it a go.

31, its just better being in weapons, you get to get out of all the dumb shit the line platoons do and lay waste on ranges. plus in country if you're looking for action its a surefire way to get chosen for a raid or an op.
