How useful is a steel helmet in a SHTF situation? Found pic related online for $20, is it a good buy?
>>
>>28088269
A little extra protection with little to no downsides, especially if you're not moving around much.
>>
good against shrapnel and debris from explosions, good against falling objects, might deflect a small bullet, might remove enough power from a larger bullet to at least save your life
>>
It won't harm you. Make sure you have the padding and straps that go inside
>>
>>28088269
It won't deflect bullets but it will stop you from bleeding out if shrapnel or more likely rubble hits your noggin, my uncle once got nailed by a branch and wears a hardhat innawoods now. Not essential but good to have if you plan on fucking about places that are falling apart.

Also:
>implying shtf will happen in your lifetime
>>
>>28088303
surely a steel helmet would deflect a 22 bullet if it comes in at a glancing angle
>>
>>28088278
>no downsides

I'll take a beanie or a boonie over a steel pot that limits my vision and my hearing any day. It's not likely that bomb and artillery shrapnel will be your main concern when SHTF. A skateboard helmet will do just as well against rubble.
>>
>>28088325
skateboard helmet won't protect from fudd armed with 12 gauge birdshot
>>
>>28088325
A steel helmet will block many common calibers of pistol rounds, minus some magnum calibers, and will help slow, ricochet or block rifle rounds (the last if the range is great enough)

For what purpose? Why not just get a kevlar helmet?

if it's in a good shape (not too rusty, no holes...), it obviously is going to provide a good protection against bumps, thrown objects, etc, and also a decent ballistic protection (frag, small cal bullets up to .357mag at best).

That being said, you could find older kevlar pots (PASGT, British MK6...) for just few bucks more than that, and they'd provide better protection and comfort.
>>
Probably as good as a hard hat, but heavier, and you can beat someone to death with it.
>>
>>28088509
you'd probably die if you were wearing the helmet and it caved in as much as in the pic
>>
i gots me a vietnam era u.s. army steel pot helmet, good condition, heavy as hell and didn't come with a chinstrap, I literally had to make a chinstrap out of construction materials, it works though

M1956 or gtfo.
>>
>>28088323
yes it would
>>
>>28088559
The human skull is surprisingly durable, and that helmet was probably empty when shot.
>>
>>28088340
If you let a fudd get close enough to you to hit your entire head with birdshot nothing will protect you enough.
>>
I have one of those. I like it but i doubt if it would stop a bullet. I also think it's quite large and much prefer to wear a Vietnam era US army helmet that my brother has. It's just a lot more comfortable and doesnt get in the way as much.
>>
>>28088269
It'd be better than nothing if you're planning on taking a lot of incoming fire. If you're "bugging out" and don't plan on having a fixed position then it's kind of pointless because you'll be dead anyway.

Damn straight. This and the Soviet SSh-68 eggshell are surprisingly good at stopping bullets from entering your noggin.
>>
>>28088269
if you shoot at it and the bullet doesnt puncture it, it is bullet proof, bulletproof.
In medieval times, when first handcannon/postols were a new thing to the battle field, like those pipes with some handle on them and a cock that has slow burning rope on it and shoots rocks, led balls, arrow tips...
Blacksmiths would shoot one at their newly forged body armor to 'proof' it.
Every new armor had a dent from the test, a proof that proves it is bulletproof.
But then guns became better and better, armor had to be heavier and heavier and knights were gone. And so was plate armor.
Tanks are next.

a .32 acp will penetrate a US steel pot helmet if you aren't wearing the liner that goes with the helmet.

No. It's uncomfortable, heavy, and generally is inferior compared to other helmets.

If you really want a helmet for your operating buy a cheap bump helmet, it'll feel better and works for its intended purpose.

>but muh bullets, shrapnel, and something else stupid
It's not going to stop a bullet, even most common pistol rounds will penetrate a steel helmet. If you're getting hit with shrapnel from explosives you're fucked even with your helmet- not to mention how unlikely you are to find yourself being shelled- the fact is you're most likely to bump your head on something. Get a helmet that reflects this.

Seriously, look at how the how most of the special operations community has moved away from full coverage helmets to what are basically bump helmets. Hell, even before that CAG was rocking skateboard helmets back in Somalia.
>>
>>28088323

they would deflect point blank 90 degree shots of 22 45 and 9mm.

Start getting into something more powerful and it gets iffy.

Aramid fibers in a polymer. Basically high tech fiberglass.

The new, not yet fully adopted ECH is all (special secret) polymer though.
>>
>>28091902
why would anyone wear the helmet without the liner?
>>
>>28097037
Thx m8, I presume a modern helmet will stop a bullet unlike a steel helmet right? What kind of bullets can it stop?
>>
>>28089258
Nope. Good condition ACH/MICH2000s can be had all day for $50, complete with pads. Highcut ACH/MICH2001 regularly go for as little as $75.

I mean hell, I got my Crye Airframe used for $130 and its a $500 helmet.

but how u even going to cook soup in a kevlar helmet??
>>
>>28097066
Put your sealed soup packet in the heater bag and prop it up in the helmet, duh.
>>
>>28097054
Depends on the helmet. The K pot (PASGT) would stop service pistol rounds point blank. ACH and the Marine LWH will stop both x39s at 20ft 75-80% of the time dead on and did well at deflecting. The new ECH is NIJ lv. IV/SAPI rated and is x51 ball multihit protection at 20ft.

Aramid = Kevlar. Just to let ya know.

And yes, the modern kevlar pots are rated up to NIJ IIIa, as in rated to stop even .44 Magnum.
They're not rated to stop rifle rounds, but occasionally some lucky sods survive even those thanks to their pots.

Has anyone considered the psychological effect helmets provide?

When you hand your nogunz friend a shotgun and he panics because he feels under armed and under trained a helmet might add comfort to a serious situation.

Another point:
A group of guys in matching camo with matching helmets and LBE will present a harder target than a bunch of guys in realtree and skicaps.

Just food for thought.
>>
>>28099502
also a helmet can be used to identify your allies

Body armour that is not sufficient to defeat the threat you face actually increases casualty rates. It gives people an unwarranted level of confidence.

>>
>Le helmets stop bullets meme
Unless it is made to be bulletproof it is not. Most helmets are made for bumps and shapnel. All situations where a bullet was supposedly deflected hit the helmet at a trajectory which would have missed the head.

Because I may be mildy autistic, I had posted this:
.22mm Short -> .22 Short
.9mm -> 9x19mm (probably, could be 9x18 or 9x21 but that's not likely)
.45mm -> .45 ACP
.380mm -> .380 ACP
.38mm -> .38 Special (probably)
.22mm Long -> .22lr (probably, .22 long is also a cartridge, but not a popular one since the early 1900s).

Steel helmets can stop pistol calibers effectively enough but they aren't something to wear after they eat a shot because how bad the metal will deform.

The US M1 steel helmet is to be worn with the liner.

The liner got a similar protection to a bump helmet or a construction helmet.
