I came here to post this
>>

Literally every McDonell/Douglass plane has a 2spoopy name. It's kind of their thing.

man, they should of saved the name "Phantom" for a stealth aircraft.
>>
>>28089466
The name was used long before stealth was a thing, though.

Few people realize that the F-4 was actually the Phantom II, here's the original.
>>
McDonnell loved spoopy names for their planes. Here's the Banshee, anybody who plays War Thunder will likely have a love/hate relationship with this one.

This pic in particular is of a plane who fucked up and landed on the wrong carrier. It's one of my favorite military photos ever.
>>
And then the F3H Demon.

It's not hard to see where the F-4 came from. (The F-4 would have been called the F4H had the Navy not switched designation systems.)
>>
>>28089523
>landed on the wrong carrier
How is that even possible?
I wonder how that pilots career looked like after that.
>>
>>28089523
>anybody who plays War Thunder will likely have a love/hate relationship with this one
god fucking damnit

>oh, lets play the tempest a bit!
>hokkaido, again? oh well, its not that bad i guess
>thats an awful lot of meteors on my team, does that mean...?

yes, it usually does mean 3/4 of the enemy team is in F2HIVs and the rest in B-29s
>>
>>28089565
I had to wonder that myself for a while. I imagine it being early cold war days, he got chewed out considerably, but probably moved past it.
>>
>>28089565
No GPS back then, probably limited radio ability. The carrier he landed on was probably of the same class as the one he took off from, and looked identical from the air. I'd bet nobody realized what had happened until he was already on the deck.
>>
>>28089565
I found this while googling the picture, made me giggle.

>I'm a helo pilot. I have shot approaches to the wrong ship.

>When multiple small bows are steaming in a five mile radius under emcom at night they look fucking identical. I didn't land because the deck flood lights you can only see from ,5 nm were not on.

>Once in broad day light I was transferring a Japanese 2 star back to his destroyer. It was steaming in company five abreast with four other Japanese ships. Their hull numbers and names were in kanji and they were 200 yards apart. I had no fucking clue who I was talking to on the radio. I entered a slow side ways creep to each ship with the Japanese tower controller saying no. No. No. Yes land here. That's how I found the right ship.

>If you don't have a 200 traps we don't need your judgement.
>>
>>28089588
You're either down-tiered and lose trying to babysit a bunch of mouthbreathers in B-29s or up-tiered and gangbanged by a swarm of MiG-15s. One of the many reasons I stopped playing War Thunder.
>>
>>28089632
I didn't even get to jets. I quit at tier 3 when I realized that the community was bullshit.
>>
>>28089618
Does Japan have officers of that rank on destroyers regularly, or was that just for the exercise?

Searching the pic also turned up this, the result of an F/A-18 having to put down at a Marine base on dry land during OEF.
>>
>>28089671
I unlocked jets for every nation and almost completed the British and German tech trees, but the developers constantly making the game worse in every conceivable way eventually drove me away. It's a shame, there isn't anything else quite like it but it's just not worth my time right now.
>>
>>28089632
>>28089671
honestly, i spent so much time on it i feel bad for stop playing. i know all of its bullshit flaws, and they are annoying as fuck. but honestly, the P-47 against the russians/ japs at high altitude is so fun
>>
>>28089700
I go back to WT for like a week every few months, and then realize how toxic it is.

IL-2 seems to be shaping up into a decent WT competitor now that they're adding mouse aim and tanks, I'm looking forward to trying it. I love the idea of a similar system but with no F2P bullshit. It just sucks that IL-2 is only Soviet vs German, I want to fly my murrika and britbongs.
>>
>>28089725
Yeah, if there are two things I have a particular love for it's the RAF and first-gen jet fighters, so IL-2 doesn't really scratch that itch for me.
>>
>>28089743
I agree about the early jets in particular, such a cool period in aviation, and one that no other game has ever really done.

That's really the only thing that keeps me playing WT in general, there are so many aircraft that you'd never be able to "fly" anywhere else, at least not in combat and with anything approaching realistic physics.

FH Phantom
F2H Banshee
XF-85 Goblin
XF-88 Voodoo
F3H Demon
F-101 Voodoo
F-4 Phantom II
LBD Gargoyle

2spooky status confirmed, but then theres:

ADM-20 Quail
XH-20 Little Henry
XHJH-1 Whirlaway

>limited radio ability
If that was the case he must somehow have signaled his intention to land, just going into approach without checking the deck and making sure the crew was aware he was going to put down would be very irresponsible? (Not sure what procedures are in place for such problems)
Wouldn't he just get waved off after approaching the wrong ship?
>>
>>28089588
Oh no now they 'fixed' it. The F2HIV fights MiG-15 Bis's and MiG 9's. While tempests fight Hortens and 262's,
>>
>>28090256
He might have been too low on fuel to go find his own ship.
>>
>>28090256

>>28090292
is one option.

Another is that the planes all look pretty much the same from the deck of a ship, and in those days there was actually a guy with paddles and manually-controlled lights guiding him in. He probably just got in the pattern and flew right in, and the guys on deck didn't realize he was from the wrong group until he was stopped.
>>
>>28090292
>>28090318
True, but if he was so low on fuel it was more of an emergency landing anyway.
Better to put down on the wrong ship than ditch in the water.

>>

That or he landed went to rack out found a strange man in his bed the maintenance crew noticed a weird tail number from a squadron not on that carrier and a really bashful ensign had to go tell the skipper he needs to take off and fly to the ship he actually lives on....

It was a normal occurrence anon. Nowadays flight computers are more advanced and help avoid this sort of mistake, but really it's a non-factor, I guess you'll be "that guy" for a while, though.

If you say his name three times in a mirror Vasily Blohkin appears behind you with a Walther Model 2 .25 ACP pistol to liquidate you.
