In theory you would not have to replace the spine. You could surgically build a carbon-fiber or titanium mesh around the natural spine and then somehow connect that mesh to the bones/muscles that would otherwise be putting load/stress on the spine. The nerves inside the natural spine could be left alone to continue doing their thing.
