I found this cool collection of sniper pics from the Afghan-Soviet war, most of which i never saw before. Thought you guys will enjoy them. Also, Soviet-Afghan war general, maybe?

First time I see a picture of a SVD being used without a scope. I've been to Syria/Rojava this year for 4 months, fighting with YPG. I've seen the Kurds using SVDs without scopes during attacks on daesh infested villages, I thought that was fucking nuts. Seems like it was a thing in the Red Army, too.

...and does anyone know a good movie about that war?

I've seen "Platoon x" or whatever it was called, fucking pathetic, unrealistic and shitty movie. But good to learn something about the russian soul, as it won some awards in Russia.

It's really weird, I can't find the damn archived thread. I did 3 over all, 1 on /k/ and 2 on /b/. Spent like 2 nights telling stories and sharing pictures. Right now I'm just about to Fallout 4, I think I'll do another thread later on or tomorrow evening. I don't have that much time this evening anyways.

When I do it, I'll post a timestamp with my YPG uniform. Brought it home with me. So look for the timestamp if some other fag decides to pretend.

any care to redpill me on why the reds invaded afghanistan? I know the textbook reason to spread communism but what is the real reason that afghanistan is of value?
>>
>>28053580

If I remember right, the communist party took over in Afghanistan. Then the mujahedeen started a jihad to establish a islamist theocracy. And then, the Soviets invaded to support their comrades. The US/NATO started supplying and training the mujahedeen, next thing you know is Osama Bin-Laden blows up the WTC. Y finito la musica.

I'm not sure if that's what you'd call redpilling

How are you doing? I heard that your homecoming was rather rough
>>
>>28053704

Yes, but back in the 80s, Uzbekiztan was part of the Soviet Union. So they had a border with Afghanistan, and the interrest to protect it. They also had good relations to India, which has trouble with Pakistan. India also supported the Afghan Government/Soviet Forces, and Pakistan supported the Mujahedeen.

And, the commnist internationalists wanted to support the (btw democraticaly voted) communist governemnt of Afghanistan.
>>
>>28053706

..and El Salvador. Else you're right, but i don't think it's that a big difference in assessment of an open or a dirty war. The US and NATO made possible what happened in Argentinia ie.
>>
>>28052986
Was the war in Afghanistan worse than the one in Chechnya? I mean, the number of victims is comparable for the russians. Is the war in Chechnya remembered as a worse one because of the constant cold, snow and mud plus urban fighting? I mean in Afghanistan there were like 1000 people dying from disease. That really says something.
>>
>>28053706
Agreed, the picture is referring to a rebel village massacre a US supported El Salvador army unit did in 1980. The US advisers afterward told the El Salvadoran army to stop doing stupid shit like that because it's making them(US advisers) look bad. Technically the US military had nothing to do with it.

Here's a very interesting interview with a spetsnaz sniper. It talks a lot about equipment and training. http://pastebin.com/2s3F6Ziy
>>
>>28053737
Then why did the Soviets start with killing the leader of Afghanistan in that one Spetsnaz operation?
>>28053760
I'd say the first war in Chechnya was worse than Afghanistan, mainly due to the fact that the Russian military in the immediate aftermath of '91 was rife with a shitload of problems. That being said, a deployment to Afghanistan was still probably going to be a shitty deployment

>Based on information from the KGB, Soviet leaders felt that Prime Minister Hafizullah Amin's actions had destabilized the situation in Afghanistan. Following his initial coup against and killing of President Taraki, the KGB station in Kabul warned Moscow that Amin's leadership would lead to "harsh repressions, and as a result, the activation and consolidation of the opposition."

>(...)the committee reported that Amin was purging his opponents, including Soviet loyalists, that his loyalty to Moscow was in question and that he was seeking diplomatic links with Pakistan and possibly the People's Republic of China (which at the time had poor relations with the Soviet Union). Of specific concern were Amin's secret meetings with the U.S. chargé d'affaires, J. Bruce Amstutz, which, while never amounting to any agreement between Amin and the United States, sowed suspicion in the Kremlin.
>>
>>28053806
If you ever read about it it's pretty badass. The Afghan leader than Spetsnaz eliminated stood no fucking chance when they rolled up on him.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Storm-333
>During the attack, Amin still believed the Soviet Union was on his side, and told his adjutant, "The Soviets will help us".[10]
>The adjutant replied that it was the Soviets who were attacking them; Amin initially replied that this was a lie.
>Only after he tried but failed to contact the Chief of the General Staff, he muttered, "I guessed it. It's all true".[11]

Ha, sucked to be him.

Well the war in Afghanistan was almost 10 years.

Chechnya was something close to 2 years.

Chechnya might be considerd worse since you might have only had basic training, almost no training for urban combat. You dont really have great equipment in good shape. You are not really that trained anyway. You dont reallly know the people around you. Everyone is confused, no good communication. Your enemy have served in the Soviet armed forces. Almost 1 of 3 conscripts were criminals before serving. You might actually get bombed by your own airforce or not get any support.

And alot more during the first chechnya war.

One thing i learned from this book is that the SG-43 Goryunov was way more common machine gun than the PKM in the hands of the mujahideen fighters, at least in the early years of the conflict. BTW, pic is from a movie I stumbled across right now, looking for Goryunov pics. It's called Kandahar and i should probably watch it.

>...and does anyone know a good movie about that war?

Afghanistan Breakdown AKA Afganskiy Izlom is considered by most the best movie about the Soviet-Afghanistan war.

It was made in partnership with an Italian movie company, so the main actor is Italian and his words were dubbed, but aside from that, all the cast is 100% Soviet and the movie was filmed in Tajikstan which is pretty close to Afghanistan, geography wise.

>>
>>28054033
Without issues. As far as i read, the Stingers were more of a psychological weapon more than anything else. They managed to take out Hinds with machine guns, by forcing them into narrow gorges and firing from above.

Also here's a free book for you guys, about the war. http://lib.ru/MEMUARY/AFGAN/evstafiev_engl.txt
>>
>>28054066
>more of a psychological weapon

Are you sure about that? I read the exact opposite in that book from the SAS guy who trained the mujahedeen, he said without the Stingers the hinds would have been unstoppable for them.
>>
>>28054033
I think the Soviets would've been able to hold certain areas better. However some groups like Massoud's got by with minimal support, and there was little chance that the Soviets would've been able to fully pacify the Pashtun regions. If we wouldn't have given a fuck, I'm sure the Pakis still would have.
>>
>>28054099
Massoud was a great military commander. It's funny that as the leader of the Northern Alliance after the war he actually got Russian support in the 90s. Just goes to show you that in war and in life your greatest enemy can become your best friend.
>>
>>28054093
I stand corrected and am sorry for spouting stuff i remembered from some book.
>the Mujahideen gunners used the supplied Stingers to score approximately 269 total aircraft kills in about 340 engagements, a 79-percent kill ratio. Which if accurate, would make it responsible for over half of the 451 Soviet aircraft losses in Afghanistan if they only engaged Soviet aircraft (...)

Of the Chechen, how many were actual veterans of the Afghan war? I know that aside from specialized and elite units, most of the Soviets in Afghanistan were from Turkic regions that were relatively close to Afghanistan, would Chechnya have sent regular soldiers into Afghanistan as well?

Dont know how many were soviet afghan veterans but alot of them had served in the soviet army before it collapsed giving them vital experience and knowing the weakness of soviet vehicles, equipment and tactics that the russians might deploy and use.

Aside from the russians being retard, there is a reason why they lost so many armored vehicles in a month.
>>
>>28054412

Yes, and the Americans killed a lot of Vietnamese. But the Vietnamese commies still won the war. It's not the multiplayer of Call of Duty, you should be intelligent enough to realize that.

And right now, the Taliban are slowly taking back control over the country.

Slowly. The occupation basically did nothing. They are still there, and the NATO forces are more and more being reduced. It's just a matter of time, that's logic.
>>
>>28054532
Did the commies fare well though? Quite a difference there.
The talibs are the only ones who can unite a country that's has such fucked up morals as afghanistan. Rape and thievery pretty much went to 0 when they came to power in the 90s.
Doesn't mean that they're "doing well", they just can't lose.

That's what I meant by "doing well", they are still there, resisting and with good chances to take over in a few years. That's what "doing well" means to me in an asymetric war.
