Do CIA spies actually fight as well as Jason Bourne?
>>
Haha, no

No. No they do not. about...6 out of 10 are slightly in shape computer nerds.

You know those out of shape guys from your HR department? Yeah most of them look like that.

No, most (of the ones I've heard about or gave descriptions of their work) simply just sit in the field and listen to stuff, gathering intel and receiving some support from home.

For instance, there was a guy who was simply paid to sit in an English manor under a false identity as a businessman, maintaining a legitimate front, meeting with people and recording everything he saw and heard. Rarely, he might've been asked to obtain some information clandestinely, but for the most part, his only real crime was not being who he said he was. Nearly all the information he got was simply insider information given willingly or overheard.

Same guy also got transferred to Afganistan though, where he spent a good amount of time just sitting in a tent monitoring various listening devices and radio communication between parties. Pretty much just doing nothing but writing down stuff on a notepad all day while eating MREs and looking inconspicuous. A lot of agents seem to do that sort of boring work.

A few guys are ex-military of various sorts, but they usually do not have to rely on their training every day, and instead simply retain their skills as backup. If shit really hits the fan, they're most likely dead or exposed anyway.

Some guys make dealings with unsavory folk, usually posing as an independent or something else. They're set up much like the first guy was, with a fake identity and job credentials to make them look legit, and they can phone things in to the main office to procure stuff. For instance, an agent selling guns to third parties can arm someone without having blame fall on America. Sometimes, the public puts the pieces together and ineffectively backlashes anyway.

This is actually true as well. The CIA as a whole is almost 90% desk jobs, administrative positions, lab guys, and a few other legitimate fronts that loosely tie in to the organization. It's like the NSA in that for every person doing something interesting, covert, or meaningful, there's 5 other guys that do banal stuff like accounting, secretarial work, or janitorial duty.

CIA Para probably fight pretty well

But nobody fights like Jason Bourne that shit is fictional

Yeah, these guys probably do fight pretty well.

"The group selects operatives from other tier one special mission units such as Delta Force, DEVGRU, ISA, and 24th STS, as well as other United States special operations forces, such as USNSWC, MARSOC, Green Berets, SEALs, SWCC, Force Recon, Pararescuemen, Combat Controllers, and Army Rangers."

That doesn't make them Jason Bourne. They are probably on par with a fairly capable pub fighter, they aren't john wick or anything.

So the last couple of James Bond movies have centered around the question, "Do we still need a spook with a gun running around shooting baddies?"

Of course, in the world of James Bond, all the nerds with the computers, drones and satellites end up being corrupt... So our hero needs to run around shooting bad guys.

But here in reality, looks like the computers, drone and satellites have already taken over, huh?

There are still James Bond style spies in a manner of speaking, they just wear Arcteryx and Oakley, not Armani and Omega.

Not all covert ops are targeted killings and surveillance. Actually i would say these are the minority.
