If by destroying, you mean to completely vaporize, then no. We could probably break of large chunks little by little.

...But why?

I'm sure it could be done, stockpile all the nuclear devices on earth along with billions of tonnes of various other explosives drilled deep into the moons surface.

The cost and logistics would be astronomical, probably resulting in total global financial ruin, followed quickly by actual global ruin due to there being no moon anymore.

It's true, dumbasses. Even Steven Hawking said it. We're supposed to be in an ice age right now but it's not happening specifically because of global warming. When the period of ice age ends, earth will get too hot for the various feedback mechanisims in the environment to keep the temperature stable.

The sun isn't helping, either. It has been getting steadily hotter for the last billion years. Earth will become Venus 2.0 long before the sun swallows it, with or without global warming. We need to escape to space, but the only country with the resources and technology to do is wasting its time bombing terrorists.

I'm Noah. You guys are the heavens. When life ends on earth it will be because the atmosphere succumbed to a runaway greenhouse effect. It's going to happen whether we throttle greenhouse gases or not, but it's going to happen much faster if we don't. I'm talking about the difference between a thousand years (worst case global warming scenario) and a million years (the point at which the sun is going to be too hot for the atmosphere to regulate itself in any case).

Destroying the moon with conventional means is a bit tough. If I had a scant 10 billion dollars or so i think I could attach an ion engine to a meteor and slam it into the moon and knock it's orbit out of whack. If time wasn't of any issue I could move a meteor close to the moon and pull it away from the earth and fling it off into space somewhere.

That's really boring though. I'd rather slam the moon into earth and fucking end this place.
>>
>>28049601
The burning of fossil fuels is too fucking new in relation to the lifespan of earth. 200 years of burning fossil fuels won't have any impact on the overall climate of the earth. If the climate is changing at all its due to natural processes not because someone drives a V8.

Humans could destroy the moon, yes.

But since Americans landed on the moon first, we technically own the moon. So nobody else is able to fuck with it, its American soil.

Just watched the whole thing.

Makes good points. Makes me wonder why things are going the way they are. I don't consider climate stuff usually.

Can someone who considers themselves informed support or refute the various points, especially the biofuels part?
>>
>>28060391
Alright, here's how you get taken seriously. Instead of bitching about "we gotta cut down on fossil fuels" how about you say "let's build nuclear power plants for cheap energy and telling the Saudis to fuck off." You get to feel good about global warming and the rest of us get a real, tangible benefit. Any time someone mentions "green energy" that isn't glowing green, I tune them out.

Pretty easily. Mass produce probes with ionic thrusters, then send them to the asteroid belt. The tiny thrust of the ionic thrusters, over time, should be enough to nudge them on a Lunar collision path.

It probably wouldn't be hard to break off a chunk. That's how the moon was created in the first place, after all
