What were the nodules on the stalhelm for /k/?
Accessories?

For attachment of a thick piece of armor to help make the helmet more resistant to bullet impacts.

Not particularly useful, but had a cool industrial look though.
>>
>>28038390
really? I thought it was to keep the liner in place
>>
>>28038404
Nope, the German helmets had a lower position where the chinstrap was secured. The Austro-Hungarian version was attached higher, but still wasn't attached via the two "horns" as they were often called.

Well god damn, that's pretty cool

Forehead plate. It was mainly used by machine gunners and snipers in the first war. That's why it's easy to date first war helmets. They (for the most part) are the only ones with the shrek ear lugs
>>
>>28038450
Why by machine gunners and snipers? I can't see it being more useful to them than a common rifleman
>>
>>28038506
They were quite heavy better suited to static positions.
>>
>>28038506
They are the ones who's head is poked out of the trench whereas the grunts mainly just kept their heads down until that delightful suicide whistle blew for them to do a runner

Anyone subscribed to The Great War channel?

Why does it bother me so much when people fuck up memes on this board, but nowhere else

I had one of these. They're much cheaper then army helmets. The Air Protection Warning Service (Luftschutzwarndienst-LSW) was a civilian organization whose purpose it was to alert the population of impending air raid attacks.

From the thumbnail I thought someone turned a stahlhelm into an Imperium helmet.

Still just as neat.
>>

>The Air Protection Warning Service (Luftschutzwarndienst-LSW) was a civilian organization whose purpose it was to alert the population of impending air raid attacks.
>there was a service branch whose sole job was to crank the air raid sirens
And to think Hitler still wonders why he lost WWII.
>>
>>28038658
probably because with normies you'd expect them to fuck up internet culture since they've barely scratched the surface of it. People who frequent 4chan are likely people who are at least somewhat deeper into internet culture and should know better when using memes.
>>

But does it work? Would it stop a russian's 7.62x39?
>>
>>28040187
All nations had that you moron
>>
>>28038506
You can't move well with it. It's too heavy.

>>28040187
>service branch
>civilian organization
They weren't army. They were like postmen, only that their job was to check the skies and sound a siren.
>>
>>28038506
because machinegunners attract a lot of fire, and both they and snipers dont move around a lot; the armor plate was extremely heavy, bot suitable to wear for extended periods of time or to move around in
>>
>>28040985
yes it would. it would stop both 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r
>>
>>28040985
I think so. That piece of armor was thicker than the "coat" body part, it should be able to stop a full power round.

The problem is that it was made with fixed positions in mind - held in place by gravity and too heavy to keep on while moving around.
>>
>>28041059
It'd stop 54r?? Fucking gonna need sauce on that.
>>
>>28041099
Dude its a thick, uncomfortable, unpractical plate of armor made for soldiers fighting in fixed positions on the receiving end of enemy MG and sniper fire, in a time period where EVERYONE was shooting full power rifle cartridges.
The helmet was already made to protect against shrapnel, what do you think a big ass heavy plate would do?
>>
>>28041128
I am just really surprised they had ANY head armor that was that durable. It doesn't look that bad to wear, but I never wore a steel helmet at all...
>>
>>28041159
Watch the forgotten weapons video on it. It's a 4kg (9lb) over the original 1.4kg helmet.

Take something that weights 4kg and glue it to your forehead - that's how comfortable it is.
>>
>>28041231
Wrong time period son. The added ww1 era plate wouldn't stop a rifle bullet.

The ww2 era ones, the ones op posted, would
>>
>>28041284
Was it thicker, or better metal?
>>
>>28041284
its an angled slab of metal, the round would most often ricochet off unless it hit straight on, and even then idk anon..>>28041305

Are you baiting or just ignorant?
ww2 helmets had no plates and no attachments for it. ww2 helmets with attachments are left overs from ww1 production.

They removed the armor plates attachments in the 1935 redesign.
>>
>>28041401
So the kraut in OP's pic is simply wearing an older model helmet with an obsolescent thingamajiggy on it?
>>
>>28041420
It's fucking David Bowie you cheesecake
>>
>>28041420
in the op he's just wearing an older stahlhelm. The protuding knobs are used to keed the additional armor in place, when it was issued.

look: >>28038418 for how it worked. Basically just gravity keep it all together.
