Looking at getting my first ever gun tomorrow. Will most likely be going with a revolver, specifically the Ruger GP 100 6". Curious what /k/ thinks of my choice.

I have the 4" and love it. Makes for a great truck gun and sidearm for hiking innawoods. Hope you enjoy it.

Do it!
But why 6 inch?
>>
>>28023461
It looks sexy being the main reason. Is there a reason I shouldn't go 6"?

Hard to cc 6 inch
But good to target shooting and hunting.
>>
>>28023502
I won't be ccing it. Will be primarily for fun, being my first gun, range, and home defense.

If I stick with it and armory up, I might get a 9mm for cc. Not a revolver either.
>>
>>28023515
>home defense
Not the best choice, but .357 is a proven man stopper. The problem is lighting off magnum rounds in your house, at night.

Well I was looking at a shotgun at one point. I can't imagine that being any gentler.
>>
>>28023702
True enough, but a 12 gauge loaded with 00 buck is almost like firing nine rounds from your 357 all at once

.357 is a good choice of defensive round. It has a long and proven history. You could absolutely do much worse.

Get the GP-100 and enjoy it, they're awesome pistols.
>>
>>28023415

A stainless 6" GP100 was my first handgun, a friend wanted to buy it recently and I just couldn't sell it

>>28023515

It's not a bad choice for that, 6 inch 357s squeeze the most out of the cartridge and dampen recoil on even heavy loads without being obnoxiously long and it's also a pretty
intimidating gun, especially in stainless

The weigatinny no drill rail is a cool add on that will let you use a scope or red dot without serious modification to the gun, the six inch revolver is pretty good for long range handgun shooting and even hunting too if you get into that

Also looking at getting a .357. Probably a 6" 586 or a 5" GP100

Why not the GP100 Match Champion? For not a ton of money more, you go from a great gun to a fantastic one.

Except it isn't

I'm not downplaying the effectiveness of 00 buck but 00 pellets weigh 53grains not 142 grains

I bought that the same gun 3 years ago and I absolutely love it. I put a hardwood grip on it and I love it even more. Shoots like a dream, would buy again.
>>
>>28023628
eyes really?
nah dude the flash can't fuck up your vision that much.
Ears though?...
ya I want earpro
>>
>>28025387
The flash might fuck up your vision for a follow-up shot, depending on how light or dark the environment was and how adjusted your eyes were. It's 3 AM, you just woke to sound of front door kicked in, you stand at the top of the stairs and let one loose from the dark hallway with no other ambient light except for what's coming in through windows.

Then again, in an enclosed space with a magnum round going off, both you and invader are likely quite fucking confused from the concussion so maybe it doesn't matter
>>
>>28023415
I'm thinking of getting a Smith and Wesson 27. That blue steel and wood gives me wood.
>>
>>28023757
>True enough, but a 12 gauge loaded with 00 buck is almost like firing nine rounds from your 357 all at once

More like nine rounds of 380 acp, but that's that doesn't really make a difference when all the pellets connect with the target.
>>
it's been said plenty already but you did good anon. got the very same gun years ago and love every meaty inch if it. just heavy enough to dampen the recoil of the .357, nothing with the .38; accurate as fuck and sexy design. 10/10 would buy it a mate.
>>
>>28025437
I always liked the idea of a high lumen pistol light attached to a semi auto. Over 600 lumen in the face will essentially incapacitate anyone and provide you with the a good contrast for an excellent sight picture.
>>
Blued GP-100 with rosewood grips vs. stainless GP-100 with maple?
>>
>>28025375
>>28025931
Where do you guys get your grips? I remember searching years ago and getting nothing but incorrect results.
>>
Thinking of getting my first gun but not sure i really want to get a revolver. Are they that much better for first time owners?
>>
>>28023415

I'd opt for a 4" but otherwise, solid choice. The 4" is a little lighter and easier to carry/handle--especially for the ladies in your life. It also looks less intimidating for them to learn on.

Even with the 6" you won't go wrong with a GP 100, good choice anon.
>>
>>28026439
Maybe back in the day they were, now any non shit auto loader will be just as reliable while also being easier to disassemble, and not needing a trip to a gunsmith to fix most things that can go wrong with it.
>>
>>28026472
Okay thats good to hear because i really don't like the looks of revolvers.
>>
>>28025931
I seek the same answer, friend
>>
>>28025297
>no 5" or 6" model

Otherwise I'd be all over this. I hate the look of most revolvers under that length, except for a blued model 27.
>>
Are there any decent revolvers out there for under $400?
>>
>>28027552
I didn't pay over $300 for any of mine
buy used and you hope for a good deal.
>>
>>28027569
Any thoughts on ex-range rent revolvers?
There's a place that sells their revolvers after they've been on the range for two months and they say they send them to ensure functionality before selling them.

Found a 6" Ruger security six for $450. Worth it, or would Ibe better off getting a GP100 or spending around $200 more on a 686?

I just picked this up yesterday. Shot 100 rounds through it last night and I love it. Super heavy trigger in DA, but I'm going to shoot the hell out of it to see if it'll loosen up on its own. If not, lighter springs are cheap.

The sights are disappointing though. That'll be the first change I make.

Security 6 is a classic, but if you plan on shooting hotter loads (heh), I'd go gp100 or 686.

I shot both the GP and the 686, and I liked the way the ruger felt in my hand. 686 has a better trigger feel, but a trigger job for the ruger can be done at home and I like taking shit apart.
>>
>>28025931
Stainless has better corrosion resistance and imo, looks better, they are more durable and easy to refinish if something bad happens

When I bought mine it was a no brainer but some people don't like the look of stainless
>>
>>28031925
Mainly trying to figure out if its worth that price.

Not too familiar with the older Ruger revolvers, so I'm not sure if that's a typical price or a good deal.
>>
Almost bought a 6" GP100 as my first gun, but settled with a semi auto. I'm looking for a 4" 586 now.

The GP100 will survive a nuclear apocalypse. So you should be good with it.

ignore him, you're not going to be cc'ing a 4 inch either. the GP100 is heavy either way, may as well get the 6 inch since it's noticeably a better shoot.
>>
Get a Dan Wesson with multiple barrels, in a .44.

I've researched tons and concluded a strong framed .44 revolver with barrels of different length you can swap yourself is the ultimate handgun. CC, HD, stylish OC, hunting, defense, it will literally do everything. Especially if it's tapped for scopes.

Looking to get a 6 inch revolver. I keep hearing these 3 so I'm trying to choose between the Security Six, GP100, and a 686.

What get /k/? What is better for the price?
