OFFICIAL UK 2015 STRATEGIC DEFENCE AND SECURITY REVIEW THREAD: WE'RE DOOMED EDITION!

>What is it?

Basically every five years HM Govt has a big meeting to decide how much of a kicking it's going to give the British Armed Forces and Defence Industry and this year's SDSR promises to be a real scorcher.

>Why should we care?

Because it can impact larger scale shit (purchase of F-35, NATO operations, etc) and it's a fun exercise in despair, fantasy fleet burning and hilarity.

WHAT WE KNOW:

>FULL Purchase of 138 F-35 (whether a mix of As or Bs is unknown) confirmed and acquisition to be stepped up.
>Both carriers to be commissioned and crewed.

WHAT IS SUSPECTED:

>Royal Navy will lose one Type 45 destroyer, the 13 planned Type 26 Destroyers will not be built. Numbers will be below that.
>MPA maybe might be not kinda probably purchased off the shelf.
>Army to be given a real kicking, possible mass amalgamation of the Guards/Household Division.
>HMS Ocean to be scrapped.
>Another Heavy Armour regiment to lose its tanks, Royal Artillery to be gutted.
>RAF to lose Tranche 1 Typhoon and all Tornado and get F-35 sooner.
>WAH-65 to be scrapped to be replaced with new American model.
>12 C-130s retained, A-400 purchase stepped up. Sentinel scrapped.
>David Cameron to get his own jet.

So pull up a chair and watch the fire rise as we head into the most depressing time of the year! Add random speculation, speculation with basis and actual solid news as it appears.

And just remember: we're all doomed.

>In Monday's defence review, David Cameron is also expected to commit the UK to purchasing 138 F35 jets overall and over a longer period of time.

>The prime minister will also announce the purchase of new reconnaissance planes - to replace the Nimrod spy planes scrapped in George Osborne's 2010 spending review, according to The Guardian.

Lack of MPA commitment or typical BBC poor reporting?

>Mr Osborne pledged in his summer Budget to meet Nato's target of spending 2% of national income on defence every year, up to 2020. That means spending on defence will rise in real terms - 0.5% above inflation - every year during the current Parliament.

Politicians spinning shit? I'm shocked.
>>
>lose one Type 45
Please God no, we didn't have enough to start

>>Royal Navy will lose one Type 45 destroyer, the 13 planned Type 26 Destroyers will not be built. Numbers will be below that.

Holy shit.

Are we gonna end up with a single digit destroyer force?
>>
>>27958202
I shudder to think how much worse it would have been under Labour.

Oh, fuck off.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/pm-pledges-178-billion-investment-in-defence-kit

>The Prime Minister will announce a £178 billion investment in defence equipment and support over the next decade when he unveils the Government’s five year National Security Strategy and Strategic Defence and Security review in the House of Commons later today.

>The £12 billion uplift in funding will be focused on investments that will help to ensure the UK can respond to diverse threats in an increasingly dangerous and uncertain world. This will include:

>9 new Boeing P8 maritime patrol aircraft for maritime surveillance, anti-submarine and anti-surface ship warfare, increasing further the protection of our nuclear deterrent and our new aircraft carriers. These roles require an aircraft that can carry torpedoes, as well as being fitted with a broad range of sensors, including radar and sonobuoys, which are operated from the rear of the cabin by a team of specialists. These aircraft will also provide maritime search and rescue and surveillance capabilities over land.

>We will be extending the life of our multirole Typhoon for 10 extra years through to 2040, meaning we will be able to create 2 additional squadrons. This will give us a total of frontline 7 squadrons, consisting of around 12 aircraft per squadron. We will also invest in their ground attack capability and fit them with a new Active Electronically Scanned Array radar to ensure they can continue to operate in hostile environments in the future.

>Create two new ‘Strike Brigades’ by 2025 to be rapidly deployable, able to self-deploy thousands of kilometres, and with a much lower logistic footprint. They will use the new Ajax family (previously known as Scout) range of vehicles, comprising 6 variants and almost 600 armoured vehicles.
>>
>>27960638
Can we even fit Ajax into an A-400?
>>
>>27960638
Alright, pretty decent, apart from the Strike Brigades. That just smacks of mass scrapping of heavy metal and replacement with the fiend of FRES.

Would've been fine. I'm just glad it's not Lockheed's bullshit "budget" option.

>GUYS.

>GUYS

>WHAT.

>GUYS.

>WHAT.

>STOP LAUGHING.

>GUYS... WHAT IF... WE TURN AN OLD C-130...

>GUYS, NO SERIOUSLY!

>WHAT IF WE TURN IT INTO... WAIT... A MARITIME PATROL AIRCRAFT?

>GUYS STOP FUCKING LAUGHING!

Literally Nimrod MP4 2.0.
>>
>>27961167
Not exactly. LM actually makes newly built and modern C130s. Still not as good as a P-8 is of course.
>>
>>27961266
That wasn't what was being offered though. It was refurbishment of the existing C-130 fleet and the addition of a roll on MPA module for the cargo space.
>>
>>27960737
>Reduced Type 26
>Withdrawl of some combat vessels

So the Army and Air Force are getting some love here, the Navy is getting fucked in the ass though. I mean the P-8s are nice for them as well, but still.
>>
>>27961300
Having two carriers commissioned with a full fleet air arm doesnt sound like getting fucked anon
>>
>>27961300
>Army
>Coming out of this decent

Ajax purchase was already going ahead to replace the FVs. The emphasis on focusing on light, air-mobile, etc seems to be a nicer way of saying 'Fare thee well CLIP, AS-90, Challenger successor, Warrior, etc'
>>
>>27961300
RAF operate the MPA, they're the ones with the Seedcorn squadrons.

Somehow, and I don't know HOW, the Crabs have pulled a blinder on this.
>>
>>27961393
I'm pretty sure we all already knew the Challenger successor was fucked.

It's gonna end up being the Leopard or (less likely) the Abrams.
>>
>>27961433
Oh no, I knew that. I meant having an MBT.
