I checked the sticky, but there's nothing on shotguns.

For home defense/shtf, would I be fine with a Mossberg 500, Remington 870 or similarly cheap/mass market 12 gauge pump-action shotgun?

What does /k/ generally recommend?

I recommend an AR or other rifle, they'll get the job done just as good. Shotguns are obsolete and frankly meme weapons.

There's barrel attachments for that.

The Mossberg is basically standard issue when it comes to "Git off my lawn" firearms. I'd check the quality on the 870 if it was manufactured after 07-ish. The Mossberg Maverick 88 is basically a 500 with a slightly lower build quality and a cross-bar safety, but you can save up to 100 bucks. Big 5 had it on sale last week for 200 bucks.

People throw both of those words around too liberally. Shotguns are both effective and appropriate for the home and SHTF scenarios. They simply follow a different doctrine than a semi automatic rifle or a precision rifle.

The gun you have and have ammo for is better than the one you have not or have no ammo. While .223 and 5.56 are abundant as fuck in the states, 12g is yet moreso and easier to reload.

Not at all.

A pump action shotgun is the perfect SHTF gun.

>Mossberg 500

if you want to use a "regular" stock, get a Mossberg. The tang mounted safety and position of the slide lock release are perfect ergonomically speaking (for a full stock).

>Remington 870

if you want to use a pistol grip, the trigger mounted safety of 870 is perfect. it's also a heavier receiver which helps to control the recoil of a pistol grip shotgun. (i suggest using a full stock)

>cheap/mass market 12 guage

I've owned several of the 150$ - 250$ cheapo shotguns. Most are clones of R-870, M-500, W-1300. I've had no issues with any of them. They go bang when you pull the trigger. You gotta remember that the pump shotgun is a crazy simple design. It's easy to make, so the cheap ones work just fine. You might have some issues with shells that have funky crimping on the end, but if you just stick with federal or fiachi (spelling) you'll be fine.

Main draw back of non-name-brand shotguns is buying "accessories". To keep from being sued, and other legal concerns, these clone shoguns have things slightly changed to keep you from using parts from the original design. a bit of work with your dremel tool will usually fix that though.

But then you have no excuse not to enter every room by firing a breaching round the size of a beer can at the lock.

Yup. RI-fag here, went to dicks last night and signed for a mossberg 88. It was $219, but the dudes said to come back for the sale and they'd right it down. When I go to pick it up next sunday I'll be paying $170

Such a deal. I also bought a 10 gun safe for $99

Another Canuck here looking at purchasing my first shotgun. I think I've pretty much settled on a Mossberg 500 but I keep hearing conflicting reports on barrel/choke compatibility and the like. I was under the impression that all 500, 590, and 590A1 models shared the same design, is that wrong?

It will kill anything you want at practical ranges.

A shotgun combo kit (with a smoothbore and a slug barrel) will kill armed intruders and your family's dinner (deer or fowl) with its wide variety a available shells.

I personally think any household of sane, responsible people should own, at a minimum, a shotgun and be trained to use it safely and effectively, along with a .22 rifle. Parents should teach their children the same. Its use and maintenance should be as basic a skill as changing oil/a tire, building a fire, or bating a hook; skills that seem to be a novelty these days but were exceedingly common in the better times of yesteryear.

It is not the end-all be-all of firearms. But if a family is to own just one gun, a shotgun should be it.

Anyone have experience owning or using a hawk 982/t? Seems to be the maverick 88 equivalent of the 870, same price as the maverick, but with a pistol grip and Ghost Ring sight system. I never see it on /k/ threads

Benelli supernova, Mossberg 500 series are good as well. I'd stay away from New Remington. Winchester makes the sxp which is good. Stay away from the 3 1/2 inch models. But my #1 recommendation s the supernova.

Go to your LGS and get a used 870/500. I got myself a police trade in 870 for 275 +tax.

I would argue that at this point in time the Hawk 982 is a better value than the Remington 870 express model.

OP, get the shotgun. if you prefer stocks like in your pic, get the Mossman 500. if you prefer pistol grips, get the 870.
whichever you choose, get 12ga.
your first priority for it is a flashlight for home defense, and for shtf, your next priority is a sling and a lot of ammo of various kinds.
if your third priority is some kind of sidesaddle and if your stock is not collapsible, a stock mounted saddle as well.
also, these may help

I'd recommend and intermediate cartridge rifle over a shotgun, but a shotgun over a pistol, so you're on the right track.

>>27962258
from a utilitarian standpoint that was always true even pre Cerberus
1 extra round and the gun was 150-200 bucks compared to 300+ for a legit 870
>>27961573
ive got one its a functional beater but the inside is rough as hell with toolmarks everywhere

they did pay enough attention to critical areas to make it work unlike Remington with rough chambers

its 100% compatible with 870 parts even the barrels will fit with a spacer
the pardner pump is the samething with a hump on the receiver and no sights
the ghostrings are garbage cause the screws used to install them are shit
if you want to keep the rear from flying off into the abyss you need to replace all the screws and loctite everything
its not a big deal replacement screws should be less than 5 bucks at a hardwares store though finding the correct sizes is a pain
its 100% impossible to get an actual replacement barrel for it without buying another gun nobody sells em
>>
The only place that a rifle beats a shotgun is at ranges past 175-200yds and at prolonged gunfights, assuming you are equally comfortable with the manual of arms for both weapons.

They are perfectly functional (many would say ideal) home defense weapons.

They are also absolutely viable SHTF weapons, assuming that you dont live somewhere that a 175+ yard shot is likely and/or you intend to avoid fights as often as possible

Dont let anyone tell you not to buy a shotgun. A decent 12ga is one of the three firearms every single household should have.

I have a maverick 88, and love it. I prefer the crossbolt over the tang safety, and paid chinese ripoff price for something that i know will take all moss500 accessories
