It's a little more powerful than a .45 colt and a little less than 10mm.

Works for me.
>>

Under the right circumstances it can kill shit as big as a bear.

.357 STRONK
>>
>>27953956
Strong enough to kill bears so it's pretty fucking strong. I'm not looking up the exact ballistics right now, if you're that curious you can pray to the great God Google as easily as I can.
>>
>>27953956
Six shots of .357 is enough to kill anything alive, dead, or undead
>>
>>27953956
when it was first introduced, they demonstrated it to the police by shooting a running engine through the hood of a car. The engine was stopped dead, and couldn't even be hand cranked.
It's a powerful round.
>>
For you

You're mistaking .357 for 45 colt.

Very (relative to other handgun rounds) and yes.

I kinda wonder how fast a .357-sized projectile would have to go for that to be true.
>>
>>27954637
Not even a .50 caliber high powered sniper can do that
>>
>>27954637
I'm gonna take a guess and say it's literally impossible.
>>
>>27954646
Well, depends... I mean it's going to be hard to determine what exactly took the arm off, the bullet or the nuke we used to propel it.

Well I've seen car windshields bounce off a .357
>>
>>27954608
I am getting so sick of this shitty copypasta.
Die in a fire.
>>
>>27953956
A bit higher energy 9mm, often weakened by the revolvers themselves thanks to the minor pressure leaks.

It definitely kills anything if needed.
>>
>>27954221
>It's a little more powerful than a .45 colt and a little less than 10mm.
.357 is pretty much = to 10mm but the .357 has more powder and more potential with reloads imo
>>
>>27954028
i carry my 4" S&W 65 in an OWB holster, and it tucks nicely under my shirt. its very viable if you're at least of a medium build and over 5 feet tall.
>>
>>27955428
Your opinion is wrong though
>>
>>27955428
No, .41 Mag is closer to 10mm, .357 is closer to 9x23mm, or .357SIG+p
>>
>>27955569
.41 is a whole other level. With heavy bullets it can do horrible things.
>>
>>27953956
.44 is better

yes, if you find a suitable holster. Most likely a shoulder holster, but people do it

>>
>>27955423
Do you seriously intend to imply that pressure ratings are a fair estimate of a cartridge's power? I guess .45-70 must be shit with only 28,000 psi.
>>
>>27954643
Hello newfriend :^)
>>
Is .357 Magnum viable for hunting with?
>>
>>27957833
Depends what you're hunting. Assuming you mean deer, sure. Legal is most (all?) states. 357 has plenty of potential with longer barrels and slower powders, particularly if you're using a single shot/lever action rifle.
>>
>>27957866
I live in Canada. To my knowledge, the only restrictions on ammo are the following:
>no FMJ
>only 2+1 capacity allowed if using semi-auto or pump-action
>no lead shots for waterfowl hunting

Here's what I was planning on using:
>lever-action rifle
>.357 Magnum, soft point
>>
>>27955611
Better how, more powerful? Then yes.

In other news .338 is "better" than .22 LR

>muh stopping powerrrrr
>>
>>27953956

powerful enough, why?
>>
Powerful enough to work, way less powerful than the noguns public thinks.
>>
>>27954005

The instructor in my CCW class literally said this about the .308 cartridge passing by someones neck and tearing open their jugular at 600 meters.
>>
Besides revolvers and some lever-action rifles, are there any other type of firearms that use .357?

Personally, I think it would be cool to see a polymer pistol that uses such a caliber, practicality be damned.
>>
>>27958145
Versions of the Desert Eagle do, the Coonan (a .357 1911 clone), and I don't remember whether the LAR 1911 did but I think it may have

My ex-military boss once told me that shotguns are ineffective at long ranges.

I don't think he's completely wrong, but I think he seriously downplayed their effectiveness.

According to him:
>only good for hunting small game
>bad for large game unless you're really close (like a bear charging towards you)
>police use them to minimize the chances of actually hurting/killing anyone

Should be just fine using a rifle. You'll want to stay in the 100 yard range, and of course will need good shot placement. Look into heavier loads, the common 125gr and 158gr likely won't do. And make sure to only shoot jacketed or gas-checked bullets to avoid leading.
>>
>>27958767
I'll probably have to look further into it later, but I was planning on using JSP or HP ammunition, because I've heard from other hunters that removing bits of lead is a pain in the ass if you plan on eating what you harvest.
>>
>>27958819
The best 357 hunting ammo I've found is buffalo Barnes lead free heavy rds. Their website states out of a marlin 18" lever rifle its pushing 1947fps and according to the ballistics chart for 1900fps that equates to 1122ftlbs at the muzzle. So its a good jacketed lead free round for harvesting in my book
>>
>>27954572
why are you even here?
>>
>>27954571
For you
>>
>>27955423
Holy shit, fucktard, did you just equate chamber pressure to muzzle energy?

The hottest .357 magnum loads are running about 750 to 800 ft/lbs of energy out of a sturdy revolver. The hottest of the hot 9mm +p+ are about 500 ft/lbs of energy and run the risk of kabooming your shitty Glock.

The .357 magnum is literally 50% more powerful than 9mm.
>>
>>27954643
Yes it can
>>
What is a good 357 lever action?
Willing to spend around $1000. From what I read not very many companies make sweet 357 lever actions.

On God, not the stupid ass "10mm is .41 Magnum!"

No, it's not. Every time ime someone says this, they end up quoting, knowingly or unknowingly, the energy for 10mm Magnum, a stretched 10mm that was available for about ten seconds in the Automag IV.

Even high velocity turkey loads are pretty goddamn deadly at range.
>>
I like .44 magnum better. I've always gone for overkill though, since I started playing with fireworks and quickly moved toward NO3 based devices.
>>
>>27962941
Eh... RBCD claims to have a 10mm load that delivers 1015 FtLbs force. Granted, it's from a featherweight bullet moving at asinine velocity, but it's technically true, if not useful. Wiki puts 41 Magnum at anywhere from 614 to 1135 FtLbs force. Since 10mm Automatic at full load(not FBI or Reduced Recoil) sits pretty firmly in the 650-800 FtLbs force range, I think it's entirely fair to call it comparable to 41 Magnum. The floor is definitely similar, but the practical ceiling is higher for 41.
