New to handguns, and I want to get a revolver, and an auto loader. What does /k think about the .38 Special as a first handgun, and what brand is a generally good brand. Also general Revolver thread.
>>
Unless you're deadset on a .38, get compact or subcompact frame in .357

OP here, I looked at the .357 and I'm looking to get one for self defense, something me and my wife can CC with, and not have to worry about her smacking herself in the face with lol
>>

>Not smacking your wife in the face

Ew, it's like you love her...

You can shoot .38 special in most .357 revovers

Oh good to know
Which 357 revolvers can not shoot 38 special?
>>
>>27950271
don't believe bullshit stories
.357 is like a pussycat it's fucking accurate and the recoil is barely noticeable.
i shot 6" steel ones tho might be an issue with an ultralight dunno.

Really? is that dangerous?

If you're looking for a first carry gun you should really be investigating compact 9mm's. Revolvers are limited in their capacity, and in a self defense situation, you want as many shots available as possible.
>>
>>27950333
why would be same diameter or round being shorter adds some possibility for shaving the projectiles tho maybe a buildup of lead and making it hard to load .357 without cleaning first.
>>
>>27950333
I don't think you're just new to handguns, but new to guns

as in know nothing about them

You can shoot .38 special out of any gun with a .357 magnum chamber. .357 magnum is a derivative cartridge of .38 special
>>
>>27950229

Get a .357 and fire .38 through it, UNLESS:

You are certain you want something tiny to carry, in which case get the smallest .38 you can safely shoot.

Opinions are like assholes
Everyone has one,

OP if you want a 38 revolver then get one
They are easy to use and have mild recoil.
You don't need the opinions of no gunz from /k

Do you English?
>>

Can't go wrong with a Smith and Wesson revolver.

If I was right-handed, I'd buy a S&W 686 or S&W 686 Plus for myself.

But I'm a filthy Southpaw, so my only option is a Charter Arms .38 Special Southpaw.

I recommend a small .357 unless you're going to CC, and maybe even then. Get creative, wear bulky clothes to hide it.

The .357 really is the best, most versatile handgun there is in my opinion. It has the widest range of price and power of ammo, all the way from uncle fudd's several times reloaded .38 to .357 hollow points, but lots in between, like +P rounds.

As for what brand, it depends what you want. Me, I like big, ugly, and durable, so I prefer Ruger, you can drag it through mud and throw it off a cliff and it will still fire. If you like more elegance and style, S&W.

If you're worried about recoil, just get a heavy ass gun. Physics works, the more mass your gun has, the less it will be moved by recoil. Rugers tend to be built very thick and heavy.

>>27950229
You can't go wrong with Ruger or S&W. Well you can, but the chance of getting a lemon from them is miniscule, especially compared to cheaper brands.

As has been said ITT, .357 revolvers can shoot .38spc.

I'd say get a GP100 in .357 and go from there. Don't worry about recoil, .357 only becomes hard to handle when you're shooting hot loads out of light guns like a S&W airweight.
>>
>>27950229
/k/ is not known for being revolver-friendly. I love .38 snubbies myself, especially for CC. S&W 642 is small and light, internal hammer and u can pocket carry in most pantalones. . If you shoot +P cartridges you will pack plenty-o-punch. Good weapon to leave in a car also. Pull the trigger, gun goes boom. Every Time.
>>
Honestly, as someone who shot a .357 in my first ever time shooting handguns, the recoil really isn't bad at all.

I barely even noticed the difference in recol between .357 out of a 686 and .38 out of a model 67.
>>
>>27950229
You should not be getting a small revolver for a first handgun. It is a terrible fucking choice.
>This is coming from someone with a 2" .38 in his pocket right now

You need a full sized or medium sized automatic in .22lr or 9mm with decent sights and a single action mode. Then you need to go learn to shoot, shoot more, shoot another few thousand rounds, THEN look for a small CCW that you like the feel of.

Handguns are difficult to master, short barreled small gripped handguns more so, and double action short gripped handguns with no sight radius to speak of most of all.

You will develop bad habits and be the worst shot on the range in no time if you start out on a snubbie revolver without someone to instruct you.

got a model 10 for my first revolver. fun, easy to control. just understand that 38 special isnt known as a manstopper. thats 357's job

If you want to use if for self defense .357 is a better load, and can then fire 38 when you want to go light. Otherwise if you are dead set on a .38 I reccomend at least getting something rated to handle +p. I love shooting .38 special at the range, always makes a good day. Then you load up some magnums and shoot cans of shaving cream for lulz
>>
Want a nice .38? Ruger and S&W
>>
>>27950337
This guy is a plain jane idiot.
>>
>>27952437
>THIS!

Every time I see a guy at the range learning to shoot with an LC9 (Or his girlfriend learning on a shiny new purple LCP) I cringe.

>Flinch
>No idea what the sights are supposed to look like
>Pistol is jumping around in their hands
>Horrible grip because there isn't shit to hold on to

Learning to shoot handguns on a sub-compact is like learning to fuck on a roasted chicken.
