I don't get it /k/
if a good knife will last a lifetime, why do so many people buy new ones, or own a heap of them?

why get a new gerber when you could get an old one?
there are so many milsurp knifes out there, and they were made from high quality steel, so you can re-grind the blade

on the other end of the spectrum I bought 6 opinel no8's, because I can treat them like shit and if they break I can just throw them out
I an do things that wreck a knife, and not have to care
surprisingly I'm still on my first after two years, I thought it would snap, the wood would get fucked, it would sieze up; but no.

>why do so many people buy new ones, or own a heap of them?

same as with guns - because so many people just like collecting them.

As for me, I go for roles: a sturdy folding knife for EDC, a Mora for general work, and a BK2 for heavy duty. I guess I could add a combat knife on top of that, for whenever you're out of ammo or need a stealth takedown, but never could be arsed to (and never needed to).

I'm a collector but I agree with you.

The only knives I have bought new are the ones I always use.

The rest I always try to buy second hand. No matter how cheap I can get a new knife from a store, if it's for the collection I'd rather get second hand , even if pristine, from a private seller.

Any high quality knife will be perfectly serviceable even if it has been heavily used, and unless some retard fucked it up real bad I'm always happy to have them. For example, people that can't justify buying a Fällkniven for 300$ should probably do great with a second hand one and have 0 problems with it, even if it isnt aesthetically perfect.

Also as you say, many brands includin Gerber, Cold Steel, SOG.. etc have declined in quality over the years, and getting old models will generaly be a great idea. Carbon V SRK, SOG SEAL 2000 or Gerber Yari are examples of this.

You ever skinned a deer with the knife in your picture?
That's why you need more then one knife
>>

I managed to pick up a carbon steel srk 2 years ago. What do you think I could get for it? (I'm in w-europe)
>>
OP here
I understand people collect knives, I suppose I count that separately

I'm referring to people who use them as tools
myself I have quiet a few, a mushroom knife, a hunting knife, an old army combat knife, my soccer-mom friendly opinel

but what I don't get is people who have a hundred cheap knives, or a whole lot of knives that are pretty much the same

>on the other end of the spectrum I bought 6 opinel no8's, because I can treat them like shit and if they break I can just throw them out

If a good knife wears out in your lifetime doing something, odds are there is a better tool for it.

Many people carry a small knife and a hatchet for a reason.

Not much.

Unless you have a rare Busse or a pristine Strider or Chris Reeve and such, making profit with knives is not worth it at all.

SRK in Carbon V has more of a historical value than anything else. It's not a super duper knife or the ultimate thing or anything like that. There are many better choices, so they only really have the appeal of being extensively used by the military and issue for the Navy SEALs.

I dont know what you paid for it but I gues you could sell it for 20 or 30 € more than a new one in AUS-8.

Nobody will pay you a San Mai price for a carbon steel knife. And the Carbon V is only really sought after by collectors.

I think SRKs are better keepers.

Nobody has a lot of cheap knives or a whole lot of knives that are pretty much the same unless they are collectors.

Users that are not collectors usually have a small specialized number of knives.

I think that answers you question

Thanks for the info. At that price, I'll probably keep it.

I never understood hunting knives
it's not like you're planning to kill the animal with it

I'd use a knife with a much shorter blade, curved much further back, round point, with a guthook

doing anything with a huge knife takes a lot of effort; the only benefit I could see a knife like that offering is actually hacking at an animal

I'm undecided on the hatchet vs. kukris vs. tomahawk

but I think you're right, if you use tools properly you don't actually need a lot of durability
not to say a quality tool is an over-investment, but a lot of people seem to think your tools need to be indestructible
>>
>>27946718
well that's probably the straightforward answer, as a user I don't really understand the collector mentality

There are knives specifically designed to kill game like boars.

Then there are big choppers

Then there are bowies which where supposedly used as viable weapons in the XIXth century when you packed only six shots. Clubs where also used.

Big bowie knives are pretty much useless today, or better said, outclassed by more specialised knives.

They're still cool as fuck though
>>
>>27946770

Kukris are very culture-specific, although YouTube madness would make you think otherwise.

I'd strongly consider a big chopping knife or a hatchet, and ditch the kukri and the tomahawk considerations.

Part of it is collection. People want a collection of pretty knives.

Another part is upgrading. People start out going innawoods and prepping when they're young and poor like me, we buy from budk and mtech and whatever sharp piece of steel we can afford after we've been anally penetrated by the college bookstore. Once we have more money, we'll upgrade but still keep the old knives around. I started with an Mtech fixed blade, moved up to a Cold Steel (one of their better ones), looking to buy a Kabar or Sog for my next fixed blade when I can afford it, then finally maybe a Benchmade or Fallkniven or something when I really have money.

Also, you need different knives to do different jobs. Your edc knife walking around in public is most likely different than your pocketknife at camp. I learned that when my camp knife tore holes in my pants because I carried it too often. You need good quality fixed blades for going innawoods, and cheap ones for fucking around with your redneck buddies in the garage. Nice ones for carving wood, and shitty ones for cutting shingles.

Also, availability is a factor. A lot of people want a knife or two for different tasks near them at all times, when their edc won't do. I have two in my backpack, a few in my car, a few in my bugout bag, and a few in my dorm, and a lot in my camp kit. That explains having a lot of the same knife.

Different tools for different jobs.

SOG Pentagon = anti dindu
Benchmade 14460 = EDC
SOG NW Ranger = hunting/prep knife
Condoor Kumunga = building hides/camp chopper

I seriously hope you're not implying that knife would be any better than OP's for that purpose.
