The first sign you're talking out of your fucking ass is you don't seem to realize 9x19mm is a larger caliber than 7.62x51mm, because caliber refers exclusively to diameter and not to cartridge dimensions. This "wounding round" garbage is nothing but fuddlore and you're a bastard for propagating it. Intermediate cartridges were developed because the majority of combat no longer took place at the ranges where full-sized cartridges were necessary to maintain lethality, while submachine guns lacked lethality in close combat. They allow a soldier to carry more cartridges per unit weight while maintaining sufficient lethality for likely engagement ranges.

I thought assault rifles were invented because WWII has shown that the average soldier experiences combat at around 300 meters and at much shorter distances in urban environments, so armies needed an general purpose weapon that can go full auto like a submachinegun for urban combat at the same time possess enough reach, accuracy and firepower to 300 meters or a little over.

Not OP here. I'm actually interested in this subject, not just trolling.
I want to buy my first rifle, and my thought process is as follows:
I want an all-rounder, so that I can use it in any role before buying my second rifle.
From what I've read .308 is a nice hunting round and has good enough ballistic for some semi-long-range target shooting (up to 1000 yards, which is plenty for me for now). Does it really have too much recoil to be used for short-distance defence? I barely see any semi autos in this calibre in my country, most likely I'd be getting a Norinco M-14 (nobody seems to be selling M-16 here), probably tacticooling it up.
I know shit-all about rifles, biggest round I've shot so far was 7.62x39 in AK and SKS.

for me it's got to do with availability of ammo though, because I want a rifle for SHTF and general target practice without paying out of my ass for a range day.

Correct me if I'm wrong , but doesn't the 5.56 round usually cause more tissue damage than a typical rifle round, at least when fired out of a 20 inch barrel? I'm getting this from wikipedia, but when the M-16 was first introduced in Vietnam to South Vietnamese forces they were amazed by the horrific wounds that started to pop up on dead NVA soldiers.
