Say whatever you want about the Sherman, maybe it wasn't the Jerry-cooker it was rumored to be, maybe it's off-road capabilities were just on par and not sub-par how many claim, maybe it's gun was good enough to do the job - I don't care - however it has performed - it is just so fucking ugly, no other famous tank from the axis or allies looked so fucking hideous.

I'm sorry, it may have been a great tank, it certainly was one of the most important ones, but it definitely was the ugliest one.

for what it was designed to do it did well, however what it was designed to do was the wrong idea.

Oh, oh, oh, my friend. Thats not true. Sherman is not = Sherman. There were SO many variants and your're only party right.

The one you posted is a lenghtened A2 or A4 Hull, which makes ANY Sherman ugly as fuck.

Sherman hull variant roundup incoming.

The M4 (without any A suffix) was the very first variant and came with an all-welded hull with sharp glacier angle and powered by a radial engine

Afaik none of these received the T23 turret and the 76mm gun

>>27937551
The M4A1 was the only variant with an all-cast hull, very easy to distinguish by the all rounded corners
As you can see in my first pic, they were made with 60° glacis and later 47° glacis which was done because it made bigger hatches for Driver and codriver possible.

Pic shows an early variant with 60° glacis
>>
>>27937566
The M4A1 was also powered by the radial engine (I will only post US Army variants since the Marines had some A2s and A4s with the long hulls too but I got no deeper knowledge about these (diesel powered) variants

Pic related shows an all piped up late A1

The glacis has a 47° angle and the turret and the gun gave place to the (so called) T23 turret and the 76mm M1 gun.

I'm sorry man, one's worse than the other. That falling line to the back, those weird round proportions, the hight to width ratio, it's all so terrible.
The Sherman is the only tank where the old balloon mock-up looks better than the tank.

The next major (if not the biggest) Variant was the M4A3, also an all-welded design.

Just like the M4, it came with an early 60° glacis and small hatches and later 47° hatches with large hatches.

Especially early M4s and M4A3s are somewhat hard to distinguish, thats why I post a picture of a later variant

Wait bro, the sexy ones are yet to come up

Also the M4A3 enjoyed the blessings of the T23 and its gun.

Btw: The A3 was the first variant to be powered by a nice, easy to operate and to keep in working condition Ford V8 engine.

The M4A3 was also base for the "M4A3E2" better known as the Sherman Jumbo.

The designers virtualy doubled up the armor of the Hull, creating an immensely thick armored tank that was usually used as the first in a column to bounce anti tank gun rounds when the army entered a german town.
Its turret closely resebled the T23 but also featured doble the armor. The factory equipped the E2 with the proven 75mm gun because its Role was more that of an infantry and anti tank gun killer, but from january 1945 most of the units mounted the 76mm because they found out they had to deal with Panthers and the like on a regular base.
Because I'm an arrogant scale modeller, I post the pic of a Jumbo I built this summer.

Well ok,

The A3 was also the very first variant to receive the HVSS drive train, which consisted of horizontally aranged volute springs contrary to the earlier VVSS gear with vertical springs.

You all know this variant from the Movie "Fury". These tanks were pinnacle of M4 Design. They offered a very smooth ride through the HVSS and had lots of attributes which later became a part of the MBT as a tank design philosophy

Among fans, the M4A3 with the HVSS (also called the M4A3E8 or Easy eight) ist considered the sexiest variant of the Sherman.

My personal opinion is a little different.

I like the M4A1 the best, especially with T23 turret AND track grousers but VVSS gear which would be pic related (NOT BUILT BY ME!!)

Counter shading.

It was applied to early 76mm shermans during the latter stages of normandy so they didnt stand out next to 75mm Shermans and get unusual attention by germans.

Assuming you are not trolling, you realise 'real' scale modellers and wargamers use basically the exact same techniques right? And that many people do both?

One is often done to less precise levels because its for a wargame and you have a lot to paint. Any scale modellers laughing at them for that is autistic.

>>
>>27942699
Uh huh. Salty much?

Seriously. Walk into any college history class and ask every single one of them which tanks were involved in WW2.

Half of them will be able to say Panzer, but not -which- Panzers. Maybe a third of them will come up with Shermans (but again not which shermans). You'll get 1 or 2 people who'll say Tiger, but zero who will say T34, King Tiger, Maus, etc.

It doesn't matter one fucking bit how big a role they actually played in the war, the bare fact that only the Sherman and the PzIV were ever featured in any mainstream movies about WW2 means those are the only tanks a normie will be able to come up with.
>>
>>27942747

The population is slightly bigger than the 18-21 age group.

Also where are you getting more panzers than tigers in movies from? The two biggest western ww2 films of the last 20 years (SPR and Fury) featured tigers prominently

Rare, yet every fucking Sherman crew tended to scream "TIIIIIGAAAAAAA" when they went up against a Panzer IV; the Tiger was so fucking famous, people didn't even know what it looked like, yet assumed everything that has tracks and an iron cross would be a Tiger.

>>27942409

T34, IS1-4, T-10, etc. - they all look much better than Shermans and quite intimidating. There are enough ugly russian tanks, but none of them have any claim to fame.
