Shotguns for winter Temperature use / security job.

I picked up a small security job up in Alaska at an oil pumping station and they prefer their guards have a decent shotgun for the various wildlife encounters handy. Never owned a shotgun in my life so this will be a first. (Bolt action owner)

Signing I got about $600 to use for any hottie of my pick. what's a good idea to start looking at?

General shotgun thread.
>>
Obviously 12 gauge

The typical answer lately is either mossberg 500 or the remington 870

be advised: remington quality has been going down lately
>>
>>27936443
>>27936443
I guess one consideration is if your finger fits in the trigger guard with gloves on

Alaska be colder than my ex gfs heart
>>
>>27936442
I picked up a Mossberg 500 tactical 8 shot for a few hundred.

The thing kicks ass, never had a problem.
Tons of after parts for it, and it's a great 12g when dropped down with the pistol grip.
Grab yourself one of those
>>
>>27936447
The Mossberg 500 has the extended guard.
I use gloves as well.
I can post pictures if you'd like for reference?
Might take a minute though
>>
>>27936449
Since its a winter wonderland should I buy some of the dragons breath ammo t go with the dragon dildo ammo?
>>

Are you offering to post pictures of your gloved hand?

YOU SICK FUCK
>>
>>27936442
How the fuck did you get that job? Do they have any openings? I'm stuck downtown Anchorage working the fucking state building unarmed, I would love to tote a shotgun up on the slope.

And a Mossberg 500 would be a good failsafe, easy to use the safety with gloves on. Be aware of condensation, if you come into a warm room from 20 below water will condense inside the gun and freeze when you go back outside sticking the gun up.
>>
>600 dollar budget
>500 and 870 recommended

Fuck that OP get something nice.
>>
>>27936474
Alaska is expensive my man.
The prices your LGS has 500 or 870s will most likely be lower than what they sell for in Alaska

Milk is like 12 dollars a gallon or something
>>
>>27936467
Luck of the draw? Ex girlfriends dad is an pipeline electrician. Mentioned my military service to one of his co workers back when we had been engaged and I was sent an email. Things didn't work out with the wedding planning and we parted. won't go into a sob story boo-hoo shit happens.

I think I'll be keeping it in a bug out bag most times while on my snowmobile or inside the snow coach machine while i escort the electricians and run the patrol routes.

All raise, i know jack shit about shotguns.

Ithaca M37s are my preferred pump gats. Mossberg and Stevens make good stuff too. Remington is iffy, I've seen good ones and complete shit from them. If you can find one, benelli guns are the tits. 590a1 is my first suggestion .
>>
>>27936497
OP here...
Bentley M4 looks like fun, a bit over priced for what I'm seeing online.
>>
>>27936480
Milk is $3 a gallon. And guns are only a little more expensive here.

>>27936488
Get one with a full stock, you do NOT want to face down a bear with a HD grip shotgun.

Also, get some good heavy slugs, maybe a barrel with rifle sight, you're only getting one, maybe two shots, make those fuckers count.
Get extreme cold weather lubricant for it, degrease it throughly before applying the new stuff.
If it's in a bag you won't get to it fast enough if you're in a situation where you need it, a condom in the wallet is worthless when you're already blowing your load.
You'll likely never need it, but keep your eyes up and moving and one in the chamber anyway. Remember bears can out run a horse, they are not to be taken lightly.

Oh, and practice with it for the love of god
>Ex military
Yeah, learn to unload it without NDing into a snow berm.
>>
>>27936522
That's because it's a semi auto

Check out the Nova or Supernova, they're pump action. Dunno how well they'd do in extreme cold, though.
>>
>>27936547
They do well if you completely degrease them and mind the condensation.

Also, artillery stroking is useful.
>>
Benelli Nova for muh 3.5" chamber

OP if your job allows it, Radical Firearms has AR-15s in 12.7x42 and .458SOCOM. The uppers are listed at about $400 right now, which would give you enough left over to buy a decent completed lower, or build one yourself.
>>
>>27936557
I concur with the supernova. They also take 3.5 inch loads, so it'll be nice for when the bears inevitably want to kill you.
>>
>>27936604
Plus 1 for 458. Do it man. Do it.

Radical firearms is awesome I live 30 minutes from their store I'm in there all the time
>>

If you can't get the pump un-stuck against your shoulder you grip the pump tight and slam the butt of the gun on the ground, usually works.
>>
>>27936635
Ah. I've always heard that referred to as mortaring.

>>

Not OP, but how about one of those corrosion-resistant marine models?
>>
>>27936442

Mossberg 500's safety has reliability issues. I like the double claw extractor though. Also probably easier to use with gloves. I would go with a rem 870 with the large safety, or a 590 with the metal safety.

Whatever way you go, buying used is a good option.

590a1 with ghost ring sights, buy Brenneke black magic magnum rounds for it.
>>
>>27936773
And what 308 would that be
>>
>>27936442
870 marine magnum. Check and see if they make a larger trigger guard for it. Get a flashlight, sling and possibly a red dot for it.
>>
>>27936442
I always say use a Gas Piston or Blow Back Shotgun like a Benelli M2 or M4, and they are already made of aluminum and plastic so they won't rust but they have H20 variants

however, if you insist on pump the Super Nova with Comfor Tech has a large trigger guard that will be better for gloved hands and you can add extensions for more capacity and a clamp for light.

http://www.benelliusa.com/supernova-tactical-pump-shotgun

Also, amazingly enough, this finely made Italian pump shotgun can be had cheaper than Mossberg or Rustbucket...I mean Remington.

As for fearing gas, The Benelli M2 and M4 are combat proven and are almost Glock or AKM levels of reliable.
>>
Another vote for Mossberg 500.. i have its poor plastic cousin, the Maverick 88, and I basically shoot it and put it away. I've had it a year (this is my 1st shotgun) and I don't think i've ever cleaned it.

A few thoughts on shotguns:

-it's easy as shit to stationary targets. Moving targets (like trap) require some training b/c the shotgun shot/ball/slug moves much slower than a rifle bullet (1/2 to 1/3 as fast). If you will rely on it to protect you from moving animals, definitely practice shooting moving targets.

-I shoot trap a bit, and every semi-auto shotgun shooter I've spoken to has had to tune their gun OR choose a specific type of shell and stick with it for reliability. A semi-auto that works reliably on slug or buck may FTE on low-recoil buck or bird shot. If this is your 1st, and life-or-death type gun, i'd definitely go with pump action b/c you're the one feeding rounds. It doesn't matter if something fails to shoot or has low pressure, you just pump it and you're ready for the next shot.

-exchangeable barrels are awesome. The Mossberg 500/Maverick 88 only need a single hand tightened knob to change barrels. You can have a long vent rib barrel for hunting or long range, a rifled slug barrel for slugs, and a super short home defense barrel all in the same bag, and it takes 30 seconds to swap them out. The gun also becomes quite short when broken down (easy to transport)

-look into a recoil reducing pad if you're going to shoot a lot of high power loads (full power slugs/00 buck, or the 3" magnum shells or whatever). That shit is fine for a few shots, but go through a box and your shoulder will feel it. Bird shot is a pleasure to shoot in comparison.
>>
The real question is Rifled barrel or Smooth... hmmm
>>
>>27937256
This. Do this
>>
>>27937317
Can you shoot normal buckshot and shit from a rifled barrel?
>>
>>27937287
combat proven with combat loads though, right? or do they say it's 100% reliable with whatever you put through it?

if it's a personal shotgun, you may want to shoot other loads through it (bird or target as an example), and a semi-auto in my limited experience tends to be picky
>>
>>27936442
$600? I'd look for a semi-auto if you can get one that cheap. Be that guy everyone wants to be at work.
>>
>>27937330
I mean, you can; but everyone bitches about ruining the rifling(which i doubt) but it does change the characteristics of the shot quite a bit. A lot less predictable and sometimes more of a doughnut spread shot.
>>
>>27937230
People change. You wouldn't know that sitting in your basement though.

Your biggest issue is going to be a man who goes by the name of Snake. He's really good at CQC so don't let him get too close on you. 590A1 for sure, and get wood replacement stocks from somewhere like Numrich. The plastic they use for a lot of parts on the normie 500 become very brittle in the cold. In Illinois, in -15F weather, I had my stock crack when I shot a round of fucking light #4 at a turkey so that is why I suggest the wood.

Plus, you gotta admit, this thing is sexy. This one isn't mine but its is VERY similar.

Not him, but a lot of the aspects of a person that haven't been revealed before can come out during the period between proposing and marriage. Time and time again, it's seen that one person can become much more controlling than they ever were before and start making unreasonable demands for the relationship.

This is shown plenty on /k/. Every month, we have a new thread about a guy proposing to his long term gf and suddenly she demands that he sell all his guns and never buy anymore half way through planning the wedding.
