I've been considering building guns as a hobby. How hard is it to be licensed as a gunsmith in the good ol' US of A? Is it even viable to take gunsmithing up as a hobby?
You don't need a license to build your own guns. It's 100% legal.
If you have the knowhow and tools, have at it.

Wrong. In certain states you need to be a licensed manufacturer. These are very few though.

This.
Under federal law you can build any weapon you can own legally without any extra paperwork (meaning non-NFA). You only get licensed if you intend to distribute your creations.
