Hey /k/. I recently got my first decently paying job and moved from California to Arizona. I'm thinking about taking advantage of the greater freedom here to purchase my first gun. I've fired .22s in the Boy Scouts and enjoyed it immensely, even getting the merit badge, but know very little about specific firearms.

I'm looking for three basic requirements here:
1) Affordability. I make about $800 every two weeks and would like this gun and its ammunition to stay well within that range.
2) Self Defense. I'm in a pretty decent area but I'm near some rough parts of town. Just in case there's trouble I'd like this gun to be able to help me out in a jam.
3) Fun. I've gone to a firearms range several times and found that I enjoy shooting. I'd like a gun that I can take out to most ranges and have some fun with.

Any suggestions /k/?

Grand Power K100 is the best handgun at its price point.
>>
SW MP9 is a great one.
XD9 (which i just picked up for a steal, and got 4 mags and a pistol bag for free)
Glock 19/17
HK VP9
Pick something reliable and chambered in 9mm and youll be happy

You can't go wrong with a 1911. You can get a good one from Ruger, Springfield for under $800, and from what I've heard RIA has pretty good budget 1911's too at around $500. .45 will get the job done, but it's a little more expensive than 9mm, and if you want something with more mag capacity and cheaper to buy and shoot you can go with a glock 17 or 19 in 9mm.

Thanks for all the advise. Any other suggestions for a first time gun owner?

Get the book, "Principles of personal defense" by Jeff Cooper

Go to funz store and hold the following in your hand to check for comfort and ease of access to the magazine release, trigger, and any safeties.

Glock 19, 26, 42, or 43
CZ P01 or 75 Compact
Lionheart LH9
Ruger SR9, SR9c, LCR, LCP, or LC9
S&W M&P9, M&P Compact, Bodyguard, or Shield
Walther P99, PPS, or PPK
Bersa Thunder
Springfield XDS or XDM
Sig P238, P938, P229

These pistols are almost all 9mm but there are a couple that aren't. This is on purpose. The 9mm is usually the correct answer against human attackers if you can't have a rifle or shotgun.

Jeff Cooper didn't like the 9mm because of prejudice and the fact that he didn't live to see the advances in ammo these last few years, but other than that, the advice in the book is solid.

Get live fire training from a NRA certified trainer as soon as you can. Be safe, follow the law, talk to a lawyer, and carry responsibly.

My first pistol was a .22. Ruger MkIII. First fighting pistol was a CZ 75. See video below for tips on how not to be that guy:

Ive been thinking about getting a Ruger MK II or MK III as my first gun. Something to plink targets with, etc. I don't plan on carrying anytime soon.

That seems like an affordable, quality target pistol. Anyone have other suggestions?

The only answer is an HK mk23

I see only one major problem with the K100 and that is the lack of an aftermarket for parts or magazines. Also, most gun stores have a layaway you can use, stick to 9mm and you'll be OK.

The 1911 while a wonderful pistol and a hell of a lot of fun, is a terrible newbie gun. It's involved to disassemble, good ones will run you 700 and up, and .45 is expensive as fuck to shoot a lot.

For someone starting out 800 every two weeks isn't terrible, you could do worse.
>>
>>27934844
Are you black? If so get a high point, Taurus, or ruger those are great gun.

Is the 9e good?
>>
>>27934844
The best option for you is a Taurus PT111 G2.
>>
>>27938333
its cheaper and forgoes "extra features" like the loaded chamber indicator. The grip and serrations are also different IIRC. I'd go with the 9E model because I HATE loaded chamber indicators.
>>
>>27938333
Yeah it's pretty great. It's nothing fancy but it does its job well.

Love the look of the hardballer especially with the combat grips. How do they compare to other stock 1911s under a thousand.

>loaded chamber indicator

What was the reason for this? Shouldn't one know before hand weather or not their handgun is loaded without that measure?
>>
>>27938391
you shouldn't rely in safeties or indicators, they DO fail and all it takes is one failure to potentially end up in tragedy. If you follow the golden rules of handling a firearm you should not require a loaded chamber indicator. I prefer to physically open my slide and check the chamber, that's how I was taught.

Also, the Walther PPX is still on sale at CDNN Sports for $280 I think. It's not what anyone would call pretty and it's a little bulky, but the trigger and grip feel great. Of course at least go down to your local store and try holding anything you're interested in, hopefully rent it at the range as well. You never know how a particular gun will feel to you until you try it.
