Hey /k/,

QTDDTOT THREAD

What should I get as my next rimfire rifle?

I have a 10/22 with techsights and a henry lever 22lr.

I want either a marlin 60 or a Ruger American Rimfire.

Probably will scope both.

Which should I get?

heres what RAR looks like.

I really like the history and wood/steel on model 60s. But I already have a semi auto. I have always wanted a model 60 though since I started shooting but couldnt find one 3 years ago when I first started.

10 guns later I kinda want one.

For the ruger It takes same mags as my 10/22 and has irons which is nice backup till I buy a scope.

If I was to spend 300 or so bucks what would be a decent substitute 180ish bolt action so I could just get a model 60 and a bolt action?

Or do you think thats dumb?
>>
>>27933568
I'd suggest something in .17 HMR--so you have a better chance to find ammo during a scare.
>>
>>27933632
I have plenty of 22lr in my area thankfully so no worries there man.

I can't stomach spending more than 20 cents for rimfire as I don't hunt.
>>
What brands of steel flipper targets for 22lr are not shit?

My range had ones with big square plates on them but som asshat shot a hole through it with his mosin.

I have an old Marlin 60. Its from the late 80s when they had the longer barrel and held 17 rounds instead of 14. Also has the "last shot hold open" feature.

Its very fun to shoot and I prefer the tube instead of a magazine.
>>
>>27934174
Not sure about firing but as long as you clean it later and dry it off it should be fine.

>>27934245
How is accuracy on model 60?

I really want a 22lr that I can just sit back and plink at shit from 50-100 yards on my range with a scope or irons.

Or shoot little circles or shit I tape to my target board.

I want a bolt action but other than ruger it seems al the sub 300 dollar ones have no sights or really shitty irons (Savage)

Thought about maybe going for XT-22 but nobody seems to have experience witih those.

How will it be in terms of accuracy compared to 10/22?

Are bolt 22lr more accurate than semi autos?

What is propper trigger control with a bolt gun? Do I release the trigger while actuating hte bolt or do I let it reset like a semi auto?

>>27934405
I have a model 60 and a model 25 (bolt)

I much prefer the 60. The bolt is more accurate if you were to be making 300 yard shots with a higher caliber, but for a .22 plinker, you won't notice differences.

Marlin 60s are more accurate out of the box than the 10/22. Microgroove rifling works well.
>>
>>27934405
marlins are slightly better than stock ruger barrels
think dime vs nickle size group at 25 with the same ammo
that said an ruger with aftermarket parts will out shoot a stock marlin and cost 5 times as much

Why does rifle ammo almost always come in boxes of 20?

And Pistol ammo in boxes of 50 or 100?

You have to buy three boxes to get two mags' worth of ammo. (for the rifle)

>>
>>27939115
this all depends on what mags you are fucking with
if its the same caliber and type like a single stack it may be possible to cut the top off one mag and weld it to the bottom of the other

if one mag was a single stack and the others a doublestack good luck with that
generally the differences are maglips their angle and attachment method

In a local shop today I saw a Japanese Arisaka Type-99 short rifle that looked like it might have been a good deal. No-series Nagoya Arsenal, AA sights and wire monopod (with rust and wear consistent with the rest of the rifle, so not a reproduction), no dust cover, ground 'mum. All numbers parts I could find had the last three digits of the receiver's serial number, and the bore looked OK. The action screws were slightly out of alignment with the stakes, so I think it had been disassembled at some point, perhaps to bring it home. Stock was worn and scuffed, but not refinished.

I don't really have an interest in the T99 because I think it's fugly and ammo is uncommon, but at $150 should I pick it up just because of a good deal?

I'm under 21 and looking to by my first gun in the US. Need an extremely cheap gun, for plinking and shtf, as well as possible home defense, I'll be living in a shit part of town with lots of junkies.

I've narrowed my choices down to a nugget, or a Hipoint carbine. Pros and cons of each as I see them:

Nugget:
>Gun itself is cheaper
>better for innawoods, longer range (I live in Maine, going innawoods is a real possibility)
>More reliable, will last longer
>Could hunt with it in the future when I have time
>Worse at close quarters/home defense, bolt action isn't good for dindus that break in
>Ammo is more expensive
>No idea how to appraise a used rifle, if it was shit I wouldn't know by looking at it

Hipoint Carbine 9mm:
>Better for close range, semi auto means I can put more holes in dindus in the same room as me
>Much cheaper ammo, I'll be buying 9mm anyway cause my gf is getting a glock
>More moddable with tactical rails, I could give it a forward grip, flashlight, and some kind of optics
>Effective range is shit, pretty much useless past 50 yards–but my aim's so shit I can't shoot farther than that anyway
>Shorter, I could pack it away easier (again, prepping)
>Less useful innawoods, could probably shoot rabbits and shit with it but that's it
>Less reliable, doubtful if it could take a maine winter innawoods
>More expensive but would most likely be newer

>inb4 get an AR
My budget is like $250-300 at the most, that's what a hipoint costs

Any good, in depth advice is appreciated
>>
>>27942166
Buy the hipoint, it's only purpose is defense for disadvantaged youths. Try to be more advantaged and then buy something decent.

<get an AR
do that once you're done being broke.

No, you can't buy ammo *for a pistol*.

Under 21 you can't buy 556 for an AR pistol, but you can buy fowty problem solva' for a carbine.

Unless of course your AR pistol is over 26" OAL, then if you put a foregrip on it so it's no longer a pistol and simply an unclassified title 1 firearm which you can buy ammo for.

An Avenger Battalion will usually have 4 batteries of 3 platoons of 4 avengers each. The first 3 batteries are normally directly supporting maneuver battalions and the 4th battery is held in reserve or tasked to reinforce other units. I do seasonal part time retail work for my Buddy's shop (LGS) and while we can technically sell pistol cartridges to 18 yrolds to shoot in their carbines we never ever fucking do fucking ever. Why? Because if something happens, say you get pulled over a mile down the road and the cop sees that a 18yrold has a box of 9mm with a receipt marked from our store its our asses on the line.

And from my experience with other shops, everyone else pretty much sees it the same way. Too much grey area, too much risk to seel directly to a kid.

Now if you sit in the car and ask your older boyfriend who IS 21 to come in and buy it then there's no problem. We'll sell it to him and now its his problem

Look for sales if you're buying in stores. Places like Dicks has UMG and Blazer bulk packs on sale for around 20% off pretty often (about once a month). Reliability of standard ball doesn't tend to behave much differently depending on maker. Defense rounds however vary wildly in their functionality and reliability from gun to gun and even between magazines. Test a bunch of shit out to see what works

I would love to own a Side by Side shotgun one day. They look like fun, robust and brilliantly simple firearms.

>>
>>27946407

If that's even a concern for you use .308
>>
>>27946417
I mentioned it in another thread, but went unnoticed due to rampart trolling:

I want to buy my first rifle, and my thought process is as follows:

I want an all-rounder, so that I can use it in any role before buying my second rifle.

From what I've read .308 is a nice hunting round and has good enough ballistic for some semi-long-range target shooting (up to 1000 yards, which is plenty for me for now). Does it really have too much recoil to be used for short-distance defence? I barely see any semi autos in this calibre in my country, most likely I'd be getting a Norinco M-14 (nobody seems to be selling M-16 here), probably tacticooling it up.

I know shit-all about rifles, biggest round I've shot so far was 7.62x39 in AK and SKS.

I'd lean away from a .308 as a first rifle. It is a versatile round, but it's not the cheapest and it's overkill for home defense.

If you just want it to be a long range rifle, then, yeah, .308 is fine. An M-14 clone may not be ideal, but it will do the job and look sexy doing it.

Living in CT, you need a pistol permit, long gun permit, or an ammo permit since Sandy Hook to buy ammo.

Rifle/ammo permit are $35 I think and you have to go through a background check and last for 3 or 5 years.

Question is would it be considered illegal if I went to RI (30 minutes away) and just bought ammo there and brought it back in state to avoid the nuisance of getting one of those permits?

I fucked up, /k/. Went shooting with my mosin, only ran about 20 rds through it before it started raining and i packed up. Got home late, put mosin next to workbench and said ill clean it after work the next day.

Next day, at work, call from the wife (at that point girlfriend). House is flooded, a pipe burst. Rush home from work and deal with that. All the stuff involved in the flood took two months to hash out.

I didnt realise until this weekend that i never cleaned my mosin. That range trip was seven months ago, and its been sitting with dirty surplus corrosion and pipe water damage for that whole time.

I cleaned it for three hours and was STILL pulling rush out, then i had to go to work (where i am now).

Even worth it to keep trying to clean it? Its just an old m91/30, nothing special. Or should i just buy another (or maybe an m44), take out the firing pin, and just hang it on my wall?

What does this limit me to in PA, I prefer rifles.

(1) Except in Philadelphia County, Ridley Creek State Park, Delaware County and Tyler State Park, Bucks County, hunt and kill deer and bear through the use of a muzzleloading long gun or a shotgun, at least .410 gauge (rifled barrels permitted), including semiautomatics which, upon discharge, propel a single projectile.

(2) Take deer with a shotgun 20 gauge or larger—including semiautomatic—using buckshot in the Southeast area only.

Best to get a Level III or IV ballistic vest. Not sure of their protection against shrapnel, but they typically can stop at least one 30.06 round so it's a safe bet they can stop a 7.62x39 round. Just be sure to:
>Buy from reputable dealers and look at several reviews. You don't wan't your life depending on old ballistic fibers or rusted steel.
>Get a shrapnel collar if the vest doesn't already come with one. Be sure to research which vests accept collar inserts, and which brands of insert they accept.
>Be ready to be stopped on at least one occasion. The police and military are going to be on high alert right now, so they're going to be jumpy. Be polite, be courteous, and above all, keep your hands where everyone can see them.
And I know this is going to break one of your conditions, but...
>Spend however much you need. Better to break the bank now, than regret not spending that money during another attack.
Stay safe frogbro.
