Sappers are professional demolitionmen. Our entire purpose for existing is the implementation of explosives, counter maneuver warfare, and sabotage.

I was a 21r (maybe 12r now) which is electrician. I got assigned to an SF unit as engineer support. It was awesomely bad ass.
Being in that unit as an engineer will greatly increase your chance to get into sapper school, which is no fucking joke.

I never understood this, I come from a military family (never joined cuz cysts), half the time at family gatherings I'll have my cousins or nephews who were Marines or Army infantry argue to my dad who was a Coast Guard rescue diver and later ME, or my uncle who was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam about being "pogs". Yet when I talk to them, they talk about how boring it was, and how they just sat around all day doing nothing.

Former Canadian Sapper here.
We get attached to Infantry teams to act as breachers for house clearing.
Also in house clearing if there are suspected booby traps we use our hook & line kit to displace suspected bobby trapped items.
Also, in Canada we don't specialize as much. So I've built MGB Bridges by hand. Bagged countless sandbags, landmine detecting and flagging, Vehicle landmine placing.
We do the majority of IED/EOD disposals and BIPs with some supplements from Ammo techs, and disposal divers.
Theres also construction guys who build the FOBs perimeter and hescos. All of this is outside the wire.

U.S. army combat engineer here, we did literally all of that too. I built a Bailey bridge in OSUT, demo both in training and Iraq, route clearance, UXO removal, kicked in a door or three, made breaching charges for cav bros, and built the FOB in Karbala.

It was one of the few times where not even the captain could do anything about it. We were two days from any port and five from our destination, seven from any sort of proper maintenance facility. All because someone had flushed his used condom box down the toilet and completely fucked the entire sewage system. The captain had a spare medical toilet (the one patients use pic related) in his quarters for some reason so everyone got to use that.
Though in all fairness there was a portable toilet in the storage bay. But since it was being transported OSHA regulations prevented anyone from being able to utilize it and thus that got a belted guard in front of it too. Someone also found a 10-gallon bucket to shit in and people could piss into old milk jugs.
Also as a result of this the entire boat required a new special $50,000 pump that had to be mailed in by Fedex until it could operate again.
