but if you're across the green line it's pretty straight forward, you just get a form from the police to prove you have no criminal record and apply for a license, they print it out like they do a CCW in the US, you pick it up a few days later and that's it

The problem with the licences isn't the part about getting a psychiatrist note that says that you won't start a shooting spree in school, nor the other 1001 bureaucracy process you have to go through, but the part where you need to have a justifiable reason to have a gun.
The list of justifiable reasons is rather short, and centers on living near the countries border, living in Judea&Samaria or having a job that requires the usage of a gun (like a guard, different roles under MoD etc.). Then, you're limited in both the number and type of guns you're allowed to own: as a guard, you'll only get a pistol permit, or also a rifle if you live/guard in a dangerous place, as a hunter you can get 2 or so guns, but they're all designated/approved hunting rifles.
Also all guns must be registered.
