I read that in WW2 some snipers actually did take off their scopes in some situations since they didn't want to take the risk of the scope glaring and also because it afforded a much lower, smaller profile. It's the reason for those Swiss scopes that mounted on the side of the rifle. Also, during WW2, most scopes were not permanently mounted on the rifle, but kept in a separate carrying case, that protected it.
