Depends on the variant.
M4 is a better weapon system currently for a military (cheaper and more versatile).
I wouldn't change my G2 against a M4A1, but that's personnal preference more than anything else. I consider the G2 to be superior, tough.

The M4 has less muzzle velocity unless you're cherry picking an extremely short barrel for the G2 and I sincerely doubt the famas has a much worse mechanical accuracy.
And the G2 works fine with Stanag.

The AR15 has become the king in its category. No other weapon could compare in term of light weight, low cost and after market parts.
The FAMAS is clearly past the end of its service life, the French military has no more spare parts to service their rifles and use the parts from one to service another, reducing the total number of rifles until there are none left. Hence the choice for a new rifle in 2018.
The FAMAS also suffers from having been introduced before the SS109 and AR15 mags became a thing. It got the typical weight of 80's Euro rifles and optic mounting wasn't considered in the design, it was an afterthought.

That's not really true anymore. Nowadays F1's are a mix of older 1:12 with refurbished F1's with a Beretta-made barrel with a 1:9 twist.
