Which do you prefer, /k/? Colt 1851 or Remington 1858?

Personally, I'm torn.

1858:

+Easily removable cylinder; can be removed, loaded, and reinserted in the gun. No need to awkwardly hold/prop up gun while loading.

+"Normal" (Modern) sights

-Not as cool looking as 1851

-Have heard top strap can lead to build up of powder fouling

-Slightly more expensive

1851:

+"Open top" is pretty damn cool (and virtually non-existent on modern revolvers)

+Slightly cheaper

-Cylinder does not simply pop out; must be propped up or held awkwardly to reload.

-Rear sight located on hammer

as sexy as the 1851 is I prefer the 1858 because you can quickly swap out an empty cylinder for a loaded one.

Colt all the way. They're a pleasure to shot once you've fixed the cap jamming problem.

How did you go about that?

just turn it upside down when cocking it, I presume..

I personally prefer the Roger&Spencer because it's the only one that fits my fat hands, and I can decently put on the caps with my hotdog fingers.

Am i the only one who thinks 1858 looks better?

The loading lever on 1851 is as ugly as sin, the barrel looks kinda off too. I love the engraved cylinder though, but I guess it could be done to 1858 cylinders as well.

Replaced the nipples and filled in the safety notch with JB weld.

Take both

I have two 1858 (repros) in 44 and one 1851 snubnose in 44 (repro too).

They're both fun to shoot, but the 58 can be loaded with a little bit more powder if I recall correctly.

If one day I want to make or purchase a conversion cylinder, I'll feel safer using it in the 58 closed frame (this will go along a grip modification and maybe a barrel shortening).

But the 51 is still fun to shoot, and very sexy in snubnose configuration (even if mine is beat up because of precedent owner).

Does anybody know if there is a double action conversion for colts or remingtons and can provide some schematics ?
It's not a problem if it can't shoot SA after.

What's your solution to the cap jamming issue?

Is that a thing? I've never heard of converting a SA BP revolver to DA.

I don't think it would be possible without any major modifications. Not enough space in the frame.

The 58 is a better firearm for use I had the debate myself and sold on the 58, I want a 51 still though.
Get both just the 58 first.

Is there any practical purpose in owning one of these today in the US?
I want to get one, but I find it hard to justify the money not going towards a modern pistol.

pic related is a Remington Rider, you'd need a new frame among other things to make convert an 1858

Not really, other than that they can be bought cheaply (<$250) and don't require a FFL.

Practical no, fun yes. You don't hate fun do you?

and here's a couple of Cooper's patent revolvers, you'd need a new frame and other parts too

I haven't had any cap jamming issue with my snubby, maybe it's because it was already breaked in.

>>27910547
>>27910563

Well, looks like I'll have to make all the parts myself (after designing them). It'll be a nice challenge.

I'm with you, except I like the Colt 1860 too.
The 1858 just looks much more modern, yet stylish.

Let's be honest, you spend money on guns because you like them, not because you need more of them. Capandballs are a nice and fresh alternative.

The Remington 1858 just looks like a bad guys gun. Well, like a snobby douchebag sheriff. The Colts, look like a true cowboy rebels weapon.

I grew up watching a lot of westerns. Eh.

Colt Walker
+Most powerful handgun in the world until the .357 Magnum was introduced
+Powerful enough to kill a man and his horse at 100yds
+Fucking cool as hell
-Heavy
-Loading lever can flop down under recoil unless you tie it to the barrel
