I think a lot of people say platform because even though it's not technically correct, it's something people can understand. It's an X at heart, just has a longer/shorter barrel, different caliber/stock etc etc etc.

This. I've seen people use "platform" in a bunch of different ways, but this is always what I think of when I hear the word. For example, the M1911 is a platform, the Colt Rail Gun is a specific gun of that platform.

Operator refers to SF. Normal grunts aren't operators. And practicing with a gun doesn't make you an operator.
