I've been thinking about getting a bolt action in .308 and an AR in 300 blackout. It seems like you could use the same bullets to reload for either rifle, and they would make a nice combo for both close and long range shooting. It seems they are very versatile in both loads & available bullets. Anyway, I figured I'd bring it up and see what /k/ has to say.

Your 308 rifle and your 300 rifle may be more accurate with different types of 30 cal bullets. But they might also both like the same bullets. Either way it is a good idea. I am planning to do the same, I have 308 and 30-06 rifles, and eventually will get a 300 rifle and reload for all 3.
>>
I wouldn't expect much overlap in bullets... 300 mostly uses super light, or super heavy 30cal projectiles and the the 308 is going to be more mid range....
>>
OP here.

I know they might not align perfectly on grain weights, but it seems that either would have a lot of options though. There are a shit ton of different bullets out there for 30 cal. It was either that, or get a single battle rifle in .308. I like the idea of having both guns. It seems they would each out perform the battle rifle in their respective areas.

I think it would be a good idea.

I'm going to start loading 300 and have bought 3 different kinds of bullets.

110gr Barnes vortex, Hornady 150gr, and Sierra Match King 220gr.

The 150gr is for a cheap plinking round, that might overlap with a bullet you might use for 308 since it's more midrange grain.

6.5 Grendel nuff said.
>>
>>27896718
You could also get a .300 win mag at a l8r d8, and have all kinds of thirty cal. versatility going on.

Ballistically? It's an amazing cartridge. 5.56 NATO meets 7.62 NATO to create NATO+.
Practically? Ech, there's a reason every military in the world isn't using this.
>>
>>27898040
We are not talking military are we and the price of a new bolt face is far cheaper than another rifle
>>
>>27896718
Plan is g2g OP

FYI you can get a DPMS AR-308 for like $700
>>
>>27898040
>>27898040
>>27898130

the bolt face issue was with pre-SAAMI specs, manufacturers were using x39 bolts because same diameter, HOWEVER the grendel case has a thicker rim, so naturally, bolts got fucked. problem is fixed now.

>>27898040
that reason is politics and money. nobody wants to change, and it would cost too much for lake city to begin mass producing a new cartridge

look into 7.62 x 40 WT (wilson combat)

although, you could just spend the dosh on one 6.5 grendel AR instead of two dif guns
>>
>>27896718
5.56/.223 bullets are cheaper, and supply isn't running low.

A .308 bullet and a .300 blackout bullet will need different weights unless you want compromised performance from either.

More calibers = more fun.

There is a reason intermediary rounds are so common.

If you want one because you want one, just get one, don't make up a reason.

Thanks everybody. I'm sold. Looking forward to building the AR and bolt action .308. I'll have to research those fully to figure out what to get specifically. Cheers!

>>27898878
If you're (hand/re)loading 308 or 300blk you should have 147gr and 220/240gr bullets for use in either anyway.
>>27900210
Great
>>
If you're getting both to share bullets you're putting the cart before the horse. Youd be better off with 223/308 because then yoi could at least use same powders between the two. And 224 dia projectiles are dirt cheap compared to 308 dia ones.

300 blackout is imo a meme round, 556 would do pretty much the same job but cheaper.

Im not really that big of a fan of 308 in bolt guns, unless for hunting or something. In an AR you usually shoot hundreds of rounds on a day, whereas with a bolt gun, maybe 30-40 if you're on the range. 308 i feel is rather inept when it comes to range (usually with bolt guns you want to shoot long range), though up to 800 yards is fine with 308 imo. Other options would be 30-06, 300 win mag or 338. Then again, it all depends on what you want to do with it.

240gr bullets in .308.... are you a special kind of stupid?
>>
>>27896718
Why the fuck wouldn't you just build an AR-10 style battle rifle... AND a bolt action in .308... that way you're not dealing with some snowflake cartridge .... and you could use a lot of the same brass, dies, bullets, etc... if that's for some reason your goal.

1) I'm hoping that the Hearing Protection Act goes through.

2) I'm not afraid of reloading. If you can do that, the cartridge isn't so snowflake then.

yeah they exist

i've seen 300 blackout subs made from 240gr

Fucking faggot

Pro-tip to anyone reading:

Anyone who uses "meme" to describe something means they don't know anything about it.
>>
>>27905545
OP asks what /k/ has to say about what he was thinking about, /k/ responds with their input and then there's you, faggot, shitting up the thread with your uselessness

>>27896718
OP, if youre still here, it sounds like you reload, you should really look into 7.62WT, larger case allows for more powder. It's better than 300blk in every way if you're a reloader
>>
>>27907715
Anyone who reloads will tell you 300blk over 7.62 WT
>>
>>27896840
if you dont have a suppressor, there is no reason for the 300 bo
>>
>>27910531
This is a pretty good point. I've always understood the point of 300BLK is that it's a 30 caliber subsonic rifle cartridge. If you aren't suppressing it why bother?
