Railguns. Any kind of functional/practical railgun. All of them. Hell it wouldn't even have to be practical. Just give me enough money and I'll cook something up. Skip a few years ahead from developing one for use on the field and I'd be looking for creating ways to make the payloads turn to plasma.
Joking aside, I'd focus on developing ways to reduce recoil and making new bullet designs. Tfw I could look for openings in the industry because majoring in industrial engineering.

recoil management is more or less a mature technology at this point, it's possible to make the impulse longer so it feels softer but the closest that was developed was the G11 but that was just making the rate of fire stupid fast and having the action floated. For that gun specifically, though, it can only work with a single stack 4-5 round magazine.
So OP would have to hope for another gun, like a BLR remade to accept FAL mags.

Problem with top break is any cartridge it uses is necessarily weak. Without a fixed top strap, the frame wouldn't be able to handle the higher pressure loads. And in the modern market of reliable and affordable automatics, the only reason to get a revolver is to use magnum cartridges, which a top break revolver precludes the use of

As far as what I would do if I had the budget and designers to beat my ideas into reality. I would produce a semi-auto version of the TRW Low Maintenance Rifle in .223 and .308, freakishly simple gun and keep it dumb as a stump and low priced so you could spam the market with a $350 dollar .223/308 rifle. Develop an 80% version and sell it in kit form so any jackass could conceivably get one. Market the thing as some sort of survival/minuteman rifle. Then a modernised but still simple version of the Winters SWATriplex-18, because who could resist an 18rd, bullpup, ambidextrous, semi-auto shotgun? He'll the SWATriplex and LMR could even share components where possible.

Oh fuck if I know. I'm just excited for railgun tech to emerge in the next 12 years. It'll start with truck-mounted designs, which will be all .mil prototype shit, but we'll see some good quality handheld ones roll around just before 2030, where you have to reload the ammunition and battery separately. Your best bet would be jury rigging a plasma containment field inside of a 40mm grenade sort of projectile, but that'll be bulky and a pain in the ass as far as logistics is concerned. Any smaller and the plasma would be relatively ineffective compared to regular bullets.
