I'm fascinated by the variety of grenade launchers whether stand alone models (ex. M79, M320, RG-6), rifle grenades (M7, M31, APAV40), and all the crazies in between.
So lets talk grenade launchers and whether the older models could find a use on the battlefields of today and tomorrow and how well the modern ones are doing!
Pic related is Danish soldier with Lewis Machine Tool M203 performing guard duty at anti-terror conference.
Finnish SFs use the HK69, one of the oldest standalone 40mm GL systems.
I still see man-portable grenade launchers to have a role on battlefield; they can be utilized as poorman's mortars, destroy weaker fortifications and lighter vehicles, and cause fear in the enemy forces.
All the special ammos (smoke and so on) can provide some tactical advantage as well.
sometimes I wish they would bring back rifle grenades but I'm not sure if the 5.56 round can reliably launch them long distance compared to .30-06 and 7.62x51.
An awesome rifle grenade -- M34 white phosphorus.
Get some shake and bake going!

Do you know where you are?
>>27847546
in the close future we will have smart round for underbarrel GL
it will be expensive, it is unnecessary, but someone will do it

Once you get the cheesy Russian opening this is a pretty awesome video on the capabilities of the AGS-30.
I especially love when ONE GUY carries the weapon on its tripod up several flights of stairs, SMASHES OUT A WINDOW with it and sets it up to fire. (Scene starts at 2:18 in video)

>>27848019
The Soviet/and later Russian, go full retard with weigh reducing their tripod mount weapon
though their newest AGL the AGS-40 weigh 32kg, and it shoot a titan size 40mm caselessgrenade. But it is only in service with the SF
>>27848056
Effective range is 2500m
pretty good

It's always nice to have heavy weapons in a fight.
If I recall correctly Soviet doctrine, and especially during the Afghan War, had automatic grenade launcher platoons as part of the TO&E for infantry battalions. They would haul their AGS on dismounted patrols..... nice heavy weapon when in contact but must have been brutal for the troops.
>>27848086
in Afghan, the first thing they do after dismount, most of the time is set of the AGS-17
but they use it as a fullauto mortar, so it is a pain for the thing to weigh 31 kg
>>27847546
I've wanted a grenade launcher for a long fucking time, most of my life, and now that I can actually get one (M79), the ATF rules that chalk grenades and flares are now a DD and need their own $200 stamp. Such great suffering.
At three grenades a week (stamps only, not actual cost) it would run $31,200 a year. Too damn rich for my blood.
>>27847998
Carried one of those in afghanistan a while back. Awkward to carry slung and the trigger pull was ridiculous but fun none the less
>>27848006
we already have laser guided missiles for the M320
which has an underbarrel version
17 inches long and weighs 1.5 pounds
range: 1.3 miles against fixed or slow moving targets
I'm not sure how efficient the warhead is though
>>27847933
therewas a mount for m16s that reliably launched rocket propelled grenades from under the barrel
>>27848205
Looks like a Cylons dick.

Thank you for your service
Do 37mm launchers count?

Glad I can be a pawn for your freedoms
>>27848213
yea, the JAW or RAW. some shit name like that. basically a fucking underbarrel bowling ball
M79 is the best all the way..

Question:- The Mk 32 MGL.Does the short barrel of Mk 32 affecting its performance than the standard long barrel one?
Is there such a thing as 37mm HE?
>>27848504
>does barrel length affect ballistics?
>>27847933
No reason you couldn't make a special overcharged blank for grenade ops.
>>27849428
No quit being retarded.
>>27849550
And now I have an erection, thanks.
You better take some responsibility for this.
>>27848205
Honestly yeah, cost effectiveness (which shouldn't be a problem for the US Military) and the warhead size
All that cool technology and not a big enough boom to take out jihad john and his friends inna cheap Volkswagen
>>27847933
The rifles grenades used by the French on the FAMAS and the Brits on the L85A1 (same as the French originally but later they had RGGS) both had a max range of about 300m.
Recoil was atrocious though
>>27847867
>>27847944
BASED. I didn't realize the grenades were thermobaric
>>27848006
There is an airbursting 40mm round in development that uses radar on the fuse to burst after passing cover
>It has a sensor that will sense defilade or walls or anything that somebody will be hiding behind," he said. "And basically detects it without the need of a laser range finder. The biggest challenge has been maturing the SAGM sensor's robustness to ensure proper functionality against the plethora of available defilade structures in a battlefield environment.

Ive seen no actual letter or technical declaration, however from multiple sources, including irl and various forums, Ive heard that ATF goons have been going to people that bought chalk and "illumination" (not flares, i dont think, not yet) and asking that they hand over any that they have in inventory.
the DD crowd is even smaller than the machinegun crowd and a hell of a lot smaller than the AR/855 crowd and so it really doesnt get pulicized when we get worked over.
everyone has got to find out the hard way when it haplens and there is basically no uproar or defense when it does
I really wish the NRA would put out a publication that would make the law easier for people to understand and report on ALL the happenings of the weapons community.
>>27851474
Fuuuuck, man. I was just looking into getting an M203. Now that hideously expensive toy just got even more hard to justify. I guess I'll just save the money for something more financially responsibly like a chump.
>>27851542
just buy it then reload yourself.
you can load all kinds of neat shit.
all kinds
>>27847546
>>27851609
Sure, assuming you have a type 11 FFL and type 20 FEL. That's a huge pain to get, and about 4k a year to keep. Still cheaper than buying and paying tax stamps.
Otherwise your ass is getting widened in a justified search of your home, unless you buy the components in some way the government can't see, which is probably liable to get you fucked in it's own right.

What is the most powerful round in the world capable of being launched from a grenade launcher?
>>27848465
Had a bunch of M79s in Iraq back in 2005. A fucking blast to play with.

It's still used by the french. In fact, the FAMAS's replacement will have to be able to launch rifle grenades.
>>27855403
I love the MK 19. One of the easiest weapons to assemble and disassemble next to the M9 pistol.
