I want to buy a fighting knife.

I want to get a Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife but they look like they don't have much utility outside of stabbing people and opening letters. What style would /k/ recommend? What grade of steel is ideal? Who are good manufacturers?
>>
>>27844109
Dude there already like 3 knife threads, please check the catalog next time.

That aside, the FS is overrated as fuck. Ontario still makes the M3 and Boker makes devent repros of several trench knives and daggers. Sheffield makes a repro FS, but it sucks. The M7 bayonet is also a solid choice.
>>
>>27844167
>The M7 bayonet is also a solid choice.

will do, thanks
>>
>>27844109
Any sharp edge is as good as another, for sharp edge utility stuff.

As far as fighting goes, the FS is for sneaking up on a motherfucker and finishing the fight before he knows it's even started.

If you're not going to be operating operationally all day every day, any utility knife with a sharp point and a crossguard is good enough. The sharp point for stabbing, and the cross guard to keep your hand off the blade.
>>
>>27844167
>FS is overrated as fuck.
No it's not, it's just a refined final of a very old and very functional design.
>>
>>27844109
>I want to buy a fighting knife.
>but they look like they don't have much utility outside of fighting

Dude, the FS is a great fighting knife, top notch, purebred.
If you want an outdoors knife, get a bushcraft knife, 4" drop point, in a pretty leather sheath.
I'll tell you why. 4" is plenty of knife for anything you need it for and longer just gets in the way, either by physically being in the way when you sit down or just being pointlessly cumbersome to handle for menial tasks. Larger knives also get you strange rooms from trail hippies, if you care about that. The classic bushcraft knife will be about 4" inches long. The leather sheath makes it look a little classier and less "scary" to strangers. You could also look at the Mora if you're poor or a Kephart if you're nostalgic.

If you want a daily knife that you can use with some utility, get a sturdy folding knife. Spyderco is popular. I have a benchmade Presidio and love it. However, heed this warning, a defense knife should not be used for utility. You want to keep a defense knife beyond razor sharp at all times. That is a contradiction to utility.

Finally, if you just want to kill people, get a Fairbairn-Sykes knife.
>>

You must be new here

Try again faggot. It's not a bad knife. If OP wants one that isn't too pricey, go look for a 1095 made by a non-shit brand.

I didn't say it was, I said it's overrated.

You're definitely new here.

Probably why its called a "fighting knife" and not a "survival knife" or "hunting knife" new friend.

It's a knife designed for a singular purpose so if you want something that fulfills multiple functions you are not looking for a fighting knife.

I think Bear Grylls sells what you are looking for.

Maybe even Swiss Army.

>>
>>27844567

Yep, overrated. Totally. You know, overrated by special forces units the world over who when they were tasked with making an insignia put that dagger on their insignia. The device they most associated with their activities was that dagger.

Totally overated. I mean, those poser special forces, what do they know about killing some of the most hardened soldiers in the most bloody war in human history? Fucking plebs, if only they had the wisdom of /k/ around, they could have definitely killed people better.

Retard. You can sit here in /k/ all day and night and jerk yourself off about blade profiles and steels and heat treatments, but when the best soldiers the Allies had went over to kill some Nazis, they did it with a Fairbairn-Sykes.
>>
Why would you want a knife when you could get a katana, which is clearly the superior weapon?
>longer reach
>forged of the strongest folded steel
>an honorable weapon with a quality pedigree
If you MUST use such an honorless weapon, I find that Coldsteel makes a top-notch tanto knife.

>>
>>27844109

If you've got a boner for daggers or WWII daggers in particular recommend an Ek over an FS any day.
>>
>>27845501
Some fag in Kiwiland makes repros, but they're expensive and IIRC he has a backlog.

You're pretty much stuck with Sheffield's crappy repro or a custom job by someone on bladeforums. I think Spartan blades makes one too.

>>27845520
This is exactly what I'm talking about.

There is nothing special about the FS, it's just one of the many fighting knives that people were issued. Knives like the Kabar, Ek's daggers/bowies, and the M3 are equally as deadly, same with the smatchet and the Applegate-Fairbairn.
>>
Kabar is making new Eks now as well.
>>
It's not like the Fairbairn-Sykes is a new design.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rondel_dagger

The design is hundreds of years old, tried and true. They went with what works.

Rondel dagger is for hammer like ice pick grip to produce heavy pressure and penetration against armor and heavy clothing. It's and Fairbairn-Sykes handle are not well suited for the grip Fairbairn taught. First version of Fairbairn-Sykes was even dangerous for user's thumb nail.

im a big proponent of wharncliffe style blades in combat tasks

something like the cold steel boar hunter is a great example. with the focus of tip at the bottom it makes the most of your energy and is more intuitive instead of a tip that is offset from the natural lines of your swinging/stabbing motions.

>>27845599

like this poster said, janich knows about knife combat and has made wharncliffe blades and says they are the way to go.

the only thing with the boar hunter is the sub hilt... great for pig stabbing, but in human combat that kind of grip is cumbersome and unnatural

and if you like the fs... get the manly version... Arkansas Toothpick. it got its name from the settlers who witnessed the savages make great use of it and clean their gobs with it too

Although you did say fighting knife, and lets be fair, its not going to be much of a fight with this beast cutting your attacker up..

Proud owner of a post-war J. Nowill&Sons FS.
Probably the neatest knife that I own.
I'd go on a limb to presume that mine was never issued, there's not a speck of wear on the blade, and only a small scratch on the handle.

Here's an another shot of the maker's stamp on the guard. The best part about mine is that I paid only 25€ for it.

With a blade as thin and tapered as this, there's little use for it other than hurting people. It's a damn neat and beautiful curiosity item, but that's about it. I'm certain that it would perform admirably in use, but I'm content with keeping mine on display.

This is a myth. When an unarmed person is confronted by a knife wielding attacker, the last thing on their mind is taking the knife from them.

In any case, keep everything hidden until the stab.

If anything you are more likely to have your gun taken off you if the guy is that close.

You can potentially safely grab a gun, trying to grab a knife usually fucks your hand up.
>>
>>27855022

>not wearing kevlar gloves every day

Are you even trying?
>>
>>27850115

Kife fights are not real as in "knife duels" but totally feasible for attack or defence.

It's far more common than the media lets out, even in the military.
>>
>>27850115
>Prepare to have it taken off and turned on you

This is never a risk.

The risk is that if you pull your knife in defense, it means they are a lethal threat to you, which means they are armed with either a gun, or a knife or similar close range weapon. So either way if you successfully defend yourself, you're going to get fucked up in the process.

It's better than being unarmed completely though.

Disarming you would never even need to be an option for the other person unless they're unarmed in the first place, which means you shouldn't have your knife out.
