What do you think about the US Secret Service?

Anyone have some insight on what a day working as a special agent assigned to investigations would be like?

Protective detail, especially the Presidential detail looks interesting. However it seems like you would never see any action because who the hell is going to try to kill a protectee?

Even if someone did try it would probably be a once in a career incident.

Would you work for the USSS? What about some other federal agency, excluding the ATF of course...

Contrary to popular belief, Secret Service are 99.9% desk driving jobs.

Presidential security, which is "technically" handled by the secret service, are all career military guys hand picked from SFOD-D, MARSOC, and CIA SEE with extensive backgrounds in clandestine non kenetic operations.

No, not the USSS. I put in my application a few months ago and interviewed for the Diplomatic Security Service, not long ago. I already have a decade of detail(Governor) experience from being State law enforcement.

>>27804823
South Carolina: 4 Years. Washington: 17.5 Years total. I can retire in six months; they let me count my time in the SCHP, when I laterally transferred. 21.5 Years total. I have been on the Governor's Detail off and on for eleven and half years. We get rotated back around to other specialist details - if we show any visible signs of stress.

That's a long time. I'm interested in the Georgia State Patrol myself. How would you rate your experience in the state agencies you worked for, not including your protective assignments?
>>
>>27804939
I went with a 25 year retirement plan, that got reduced to 22 Years after I transferred. It has been really fun for the most part, excluding the hairy and dangerous times. (Getting my patrol car shot up with a converted Mini 30 and shrapnel/glass to the face and body is the shittiest experience I have ever had.) I have made friends and connection in at least 20 States over the years. 8.5/10 for rating.
>>
>>27805021
Is traffic enforcement more interesting than it sounds?
>>
>>27804372

My wife's uncle was President Bush's bodyguard. He's a pretty cool guy.
>>
>>27805297
With Highway Patrol/State Patrol, sometimes. Most of the time - it is sitting around (and trying to conceal) your patrol car on a Highway/Interstate trying to catch the random narcotics runner and mostly speeders. The rural area assignments are much more fun if you want to do Traffic Enforcement. A rural area is where I had the Mini 30 shot at me.
>>
>>27805393
Not that anon but State Patrol doesn't sound like a bad job. How does someone become one?
>>
>>27805393
I'm more interested in calls for service, like property and violent crimes. Not so much domestic situations which from what I hear happen very often.

However I'm very interested in the State Patrol because of all the agencies that work in metro Atlanta and the state of Georgia as a whole, they're the only agency that gets to pursue fleeing vehicles and pit them.

Most local agencies have very very restrictive pursuit policies. I can only imagine how frustrating it is having to let someone who's fleeing get away.

The State Patrol also has pretty cars..
>>
>>27805432
What State are you in? I will look up the exacts. Most agencies require at least an Associates Degree or equivalent on the education end. A Bachelor's or Master's increases chances on hiring.

>>27805435
You will be stuck on what described for at least two years before you eligible/selected for other assignment openings. I have been rotated through the WSP's SWAT, Special Investigations Unit and its NIU, Capitol Campus Detachment, Governor's Mansion Detachment, and Executive Protection Unit(where I am now) after my Traffic Enforcement requirements(not in that specific order).
>>
>>27805636
Doesn't sound too bad. GSP has a criminal interdiction unit that looks very enjoyable.

Unfortunately there isn't a lot of information available about it, other than they're stationed around the state to interdict crimes in progress.

>>
>>27805935
Maybe he wouldn't need armed guards if the American citizens didn't have any guns. American citizens wouldn't pose a threat.
>>
>>27805962

Maybe presidents wouldn't need armed guards if they didn't commit mass theft and murder on a daily basis.
>>
>>27804372

they are basically horrible at their job, the POTUS would likely be just as safe to have a few beat cops hang around the white house and to tell local cops when he is coming, that is not an exaggeration

>of our last 10 presidents 2 have been shot
>a third (ford) had a gun pulled on him by one of the Charles Manson family girls after she was already famous, she stuck a 1911 in his gut and pulled the trigger but did not know how to use the weapon and while it was loaded she never chambered a round.
>the guy who shot Reagan was so insane he was barely making sense at the time of his arrest and thought jodie foster would fuck him if he shot the president and he just walked up to him and did
>just within the last year a guy jumped over the white house fence and ran into the white house, beat up one of the agents and was making his way to the president when a random off duty person tackled him

they basically could not be worse at their jobs while at the same time acting like elite hardasses at the same time

it is almost comical at this point

I honestly feel bad for secret service agents. I think some of them probably apply for the job thinking that they are going to be catching bad guys and stopping terrorists. Not chasing down 13 year old script kiddies and russian phone card scammers.

considering at least 3 insane people have literally walked up to presidents in the last 50 years and shot them or pulled a gun on them with no problem

i would say it's proof that actual determined assassins or even people of average intellgence who could make a plane then carry it out with even a little bit of care and effort are basically not trying to kill our president at all

Had a teacher who was Marines. At one point their unit got assigned to test secret service, by being plainclothes guys at a Clinton speech, assigned to go through the crowd and get as close to the stage as possible. Secret service guys only had been shown pictures of the marines before they entered service.

Not one of them made it real close to the stage. Secret service, all undercover in the crowd, picked each one of them out of the crowd and pulled them aside, pretty discreetly.

One guy thought a bum with a shopping cart of cans outside the thing was grabbing him to ask for change, nope, secret service, realized it soon as he saw the dudes other hand on an Uzi in a trash bag in the cart.

Secret service operates 90% secretly. Hence secret service.
I think they've fucked up recently though.
