What do you think about the US Secret Service?
Anyone have some insight on what a day working as a special agent assigned to investigations would be like?
Protective detail, especially the Presidential detail looks interesting. However it seems like you would never see any action because who the hell is going to try to kill a protectee?
Even if someone did try it would probably be a once in a career incident.
Would you work for the USSS? What about some other federal agency, excluding the ATF of course...

No, not the USSS. I put in my application a few months ago and interviewed for the Diplomatic Security Service, not long ago. I already have a decade of detail(Governor) experience from being State law enforcement.

South Carolina: 4 Years. Washington: 17.5 Years total. I can retire in six months; they let me count my time in the SCHP, when I laterally transferred. 21.5 Years total. I have been on the Governor's Detail off and on for eleven and half years. We get rotated back around to other specialist details - if we show any visible signs of stress.

I went with a 25 year retirement plan, that got reduced to 22 Years after I transferred. It has been really fun for the most part, excluding the hairy and dangerous times. (Getting my patrol car shot up with a converted Mini 30 and shrapnel/glass to the face and body is the shittiest experience I have ever had.) I have made friends and connection in at least 20 States over the years. 8.5/10 for rating.

With Highway Patrol/State Patrol, sometimes. Most of the time - it is sitting around (and trying to conceal) your patrol car on a Highway/Interstate trying to catch the random narcotics runner and mostly speeders. The rural area assignments are much more fun if you want to do Traffic Enforcement. A rural area is where I had the Mini 30 shot at me.

I'm more interested in calls for service, like property and violent crimes. Not so much domestic situations which from what I hear happen very often.
However I'm very interested in the State Patrol because of all the agencies that work in metro Atlanta and the state of Georgia as a whole, they're the only agency that gets to pursue fleeing vehicles and pit them.
Most local agencies have very very restrictive pursuit policies. I can only imagine how frustrating it is having to let someone who's fleeing get away.

You will be stuck on what described for at least two years before you eligible/selected for other assignment openings. I have been rotated through the WSP's SWAT, Special Investigations Unit and its NIU, Capitol Campus Detachment, Governor's Mansion Detachment, and Executive Protection Unit(where I am now) after my Traffic Enforcement requirements(not in that specific order).

considering at least 3 insane people have literally walked up to presidents in the last 50 years and shot them or pulled a gun on them with no problem

Had a teacher who was Marines. At one point their unit got assigned to test secret service, by being plainclothes guys at a Clinton speech, assigned to go through the crowd and get as close to the stage as possible. Secret service guys only had been shown pictures of the marines before they entered service.
