I'm putting a CNC Router together because I plan on making myself a shitload of stuff I've been wanting but haven't had access to.
To what extent can aluminium be used in guns? If I wanted to make an aluminium sks bolt carrier would it explode in my face?
That being said, what would you guys like to see made? Not looking to turn a profit, just ideas for shit to consider.

Machinist fag here honestly if you want to run with a router have fun most of your parts will be way out of acceptable tolerance and for aluminium I would chance it due to high heat and friction wear your better off with 4140 or higher equivalent

Yeah even with wood a cnc router screwed up on me. But it was more the controller messing up on the 2nd to last pass. Can you spot the differnce?
It did work good though for in letting my new sks stock. I just measured correctly and after chisel ing slightly in one spot it had a prefect fit.

Surplus German weapons parts and stocks. MP40, G/K43, MP44 stuff goes for a premium. Laminated G43 stocks sell all the time for 300-500 dollars. A complete G43 bolt carrier group is like 900. I and a lot of collectors would totally buy some of that shit from you if you could sell for half that price.

Gunsmith work is taking an actual gun, with an actual receiver and doing actual work to it.
Gunsmith work is swapping out a trigger on a AR15.
Gunsmith work is NOT swapping out the barrel on a AR15 upper IF it's disconnected from the firearm.
BECAUSE firearm PARTS are just chunks of METAL. The only THREE parts that matter when it comes to the ATF are the RECEIVER, the BARREL when it comes to the IMPORTATION OF CERTAIN, BANNED FIREARMS and ANY FULL AUTO SEARS; This does not include parts USED in a full auto firearm UNLESS you alter a firearm to be capable of being such, this extends to BUILD KITS that operate on an OPEN BOLT, and even with a Closed Bolt, a number of which need to be altered if you don't want the ATF to fuck you over, like the Uzi needs its blocking bar because otherwise its "Easily convertible" and thus falls under the same category as Sten kits.
So while MP shit for the MP40 UNLESS its CLOSED BOLT internals, or the G43 since it is SEMI AUTO, WILL NOT CONSTITUTE GUN SMITHING.
So dude, totally do stocks n shit, bolts as long as they're not the full retard shit. G43 bolts you would need a lathe for which would be anywhere from 1500 to 1800 dollars for an okay tier lathe mill.
But, theoretically, if you get a 1200 dollar furnace, you could mill out the bolts for like 50-75 dollars a pop, though it would take some time and work, heat treat them which would cost you about 100 to do a group of 5 or 6, and sell each at like 500, you'd make your money back after a few batches.
Small market though, so don't expect much.

If you have no experience machining, your best way in is through a course at a technical or community college. I did a 4-month certificate course at cuyahoga community college (lel ohiofags). It cost me about a grand, back in 2007. You learn shop math, blueprint reading (super important, especially GD&T), use of measuring tools, theory of cutting tools, and then you go make some simple-ass parts on a bridgeport mill and generic engine lathe. If you get a good instructor you'll learn to grind your own lathe tools.
That will qualify you to get your first button-pressing job in the CNC world. Your best bet is to find a large company with a solid apprenticeship program, or a old family-run business that is looking for long-term employees. You'll learn 99% of the trade on the job.
Every shop worth its salt will have a fat old eastern european in it. Go find the fat hungarian and be his friend. These guys love to pass on their trades to eager and hardworking young kids. You will learn how to cut metal like an artist, and eventually you will come to enjoy the taste of paprika and lard sandwiches.
I've been a machinist for 7 years now, I've saved up my money and am getting into custom firearm parts myself. Leased a warehouse, got a 1980s mazak lathe and cnc knee mill in it, ran power out to the machines, and am waiting on my 07 FFL.

Its Black walnut. It's already beefy as hell, each peice was 7/8inch thick. With 3 pieces glued together. I can only imagine how heavy it would be in oak. A 20lb sks wouldn't be very good Inna woods. I have day dreamed for years about how awesome it would be to make reproduction German rifles from WW2. G41s, both the M and W models, G43s and the STG44. I believe there is a German company making G43s and MP44s but I don't know why we can't get them over here. There is a company in Texas making FG42s which is pretty cool.
I have a copy of original blueprints for the STG44 that I was translating to English but I never finished it.

Hill & Mac Gunworks is working on an STG44 in 5.56mm, .300 Blackout, 8mm Kurtz, and 7.62x39.
That said, all they've got to show is renders, so who knows if they'll ever make it.
Also, I'd love to have a .308 G43.

That's really no accomplishment. A lot of shops take just about anyone who can read a mic and a blueprint. They can't be picky because all the old salt is retired or getting ready to retire and hardly anyone is able to fill their shoes.

I heard about them but I have a feeling it'll never happen. In order for an MP44 to use a cartridge longer than the 7.92x33 it would take a major redesign. It would just be easier and cheaper to just make one in the original caliber and then once you establish yourself in the marker to then focus on other calibers.
ATF allows importation of much 'scarier' stuff than reproductions of old battle rifles. I don't understand because there is a demand here for them.
One of you machinists in the thread need to start making these parts and I'll market and sell them. Seriously it would be a dream for me.
