I always kind of like seeing bubba work if they have a talent for woodworking. Ive seen some really beautiful craftsmanship on older sporterized rifles. I miss my K98 sporter with its oak stock, carved cheek rest and perfect checkering for hunting in the winter. Seen various engravings, stain patterns and finely tuned stocks on others that make them look like highball european hunting guns.
I absolutely hate "cut the handguard back to the trigger and leave it as raw wood with teeth marks from a sawzall" sporters tho.

In my experience, the SKS throws casings upwards and forwards, with the sideways component being the smallest (but still present). The ones I shot may have been overgassed though.
In either case, I feel like a lefty is going to catch a bolt handle to the cheek, which is probably a bigger problem than brass to the face.

So why are all the vent holes on my SKS on the sides of the tube? If you're talking about when the cartridge ejects its minimal. Most of the gas goes forward, that which is siphoned off as soon as it pushes the piston back in the gas tube and breaks the seal the gas goes around the piston and vents out the side holes to the left and the right.

I own one nice 1950 Tula with all matching numbers that I am leaveing the fuck alone.
My second SKS had a beat up stock and it became the "project gun". It is fun to fuck around with them, especially if it requires no permanent modification.

That is a sabertooth stock from Hical up in Canadaland. It is a solid milled aluminum chassis.
They are kind of expensive due to the hydro dip finish (woodland or desert camo) and the amount of CNC work needed to make one, I guess. $350 Canadian, so about $299 USD if they ever get around to exporting them.
They take any AR stock so you can throw on a folding variant if you like.
