Is this a good starting revolver, /k/? The only other pistol I own is a Glock 17 Gen 4.

S&Ws are generally more fine and have better triggers.
Rugers are just as good, but less finely finished. They're also built like fucking tanks, and can take virtually any load you put in them
Either way is great, can't go wrong with either

Absolutely, I have one and love it. I'd recommend getting one with custom grips, as the stock is pretty ugly.

Is it trivial to buy grips elsewhere and install them myself? I agree the stock grips are ugly compared to the hardwood, but I've read the rubber is better at absorbing recoil. Is it necessary? Will I notice a big difference between my 9mm and .38 special / .357 magnum?

Yes it's easy to change grips.
My S&W has wood grips and I've not found them to be noticeably worse than rubber for recoil. Broke a little skin on the web of my hand once from recoil, but that was from 100+ rounds of .357 in one shoot

.38 feels like nothing to me: regular loads have virtually no recoil.
.357 is much stouter, but still isn't so bad that it'll hurt or be terrible if you're used to shooting

9mm and .38 are pretty much the same, .357 depending on how hot it is will be much stouter but I've never fired any that was actually bothersome.

It's a great revolver OP. Built like a tank and as accurate as you are. Personally I'd say go with the 6 inch just because it takes better advantage of the .357 round and it performs like it's supposed to.
got a gp100, my first gun, changed out the grips, changed out some springs, made a real comfy holster for it and invested in 5 speedloaders for it. and now 6 years later i still dont feel the need to have another gun even if i have tried a ton of different guns, that good ole gp100 still havent been replaced.
also, 4 inch barrel, small enough to carry concealed.
The gp100 is a life long gun. Very fine.
With a set of wolf springs, a quick stone and polish and if you feel like going the extra mile a shim job it is a greatest trigger gun.
My 6" with wold springs, stone and polish, and shimmed by my smith who has been doing ruger revolvers for 20 years

Stone and polish certain internal parts like the trigger.
Not needed, as over time the parts will actually smoothen themselves out pretty decently. It won't be *as* good as a professional polishing it, but they don't have too bad of triggers as it is.

I need to get new grips. The ones that came with it are beat up. I'm torn between some relatively inexpensive rubber ones with finger grooves or going all out and getting some nice wood ones. But since i want this to be my woods gun, im not sure i want to ruin a nice set of wood grips.

The sp101 gp100 and six serries all have the nearly same trigger system. The sp101 has a few little changes to cram it into the smaller frame, but you would have to know wht your looking for to see them

I really like mine. I just wish that the company that made the wood panel grips hadn't gone under, I've been looking for some of the smaller versions of those grips for like 2 years.
The large ones are common, at least.

What's the benefit of just straight rubber grips over straight wood.

Wood looks nice, but rubber is generally grippier and handles recoil better. That being said, .357 doesn't kick all that much.

The Rugers are objectively more durable. That isn't to say S&Ws are fragile or junk, they're just an older and less robust design.

Stock a 686 which is the gun that is closest to the GP100 in size will probably have a better trigger.
The Ruger is a more modern design and has a stronger lockwork than the S&W although this is a moot point because unless you are a hand loader and TRYING to kill the gun with mega hot loads this never shows up. Its doubtful you are ever going to wear a modern S&W out.
Accuracy wise its a wash. A better trigger will get you better accuracy but neither gun is going to be more accurate than the other.
One advantage of the ruger is its a hell of a lot easier to completely detail strip which isn't something most people even ever do or ever even needs to be done with a wheel gun. I will say that someone with just a little bit of mechanical know how can change out the springs and polish one or two places in a ruger action and noticeably improve the trigger.
