Is there any reason to get big knives like bowie knives, machetes, or kukris? What can a big knife do that a folding knife and axe can't?

This is a weapons board not /out/ and not a utility tool board.
This thread is in violation of the rules regarding staying on topic.
In fact it has been legally clarified that knives may not be considered as weapons utilized as such making them no different from a wrench or a hammer.

Don't be surprised if some illiterate asshat tries to report and the retarded mods give you a ban.

Big knives can be used basically as a more versatile hatchet. See the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DHGlhFJH0g

They are used for processing wood, mainly. Splitting and chopping, while being safer to use than an axe because there's more blade to bite into wood should you miss your intended target.

Also, another thing big knives excel at more than axes are being weapons. They have more heft than a knife but are more nimble than an axe, but still keep their chopping power, making them superb close-quarters weapons. The Bowie knife during the frontier era was designed as a close-quarters weapon first and foremost, with utility a second function in mind. It excels as a replacement to the sabre or sword, as it is able to cleave limbs and disembowel men just as easily as a sword in a fraction of the length. I would feel safer carrying a large knife in the woods than an axe.

A machete is different, I'd consider it different from the knife altogether. It's more of a brush-clearing instrument that can be used for chopping light, inch-thick pieces of wood, but not much else. A long machete is superb at clearing brush, but can definitely be used as a weapon in a pinch, with its lightness and reach being an advantage.

Honestly, I've gone on a lot of outdoors trips with my wood processing tools being pretty much exclusively an Estwing hatchet and SAK. Its a timeless combo that works extremely well for woodworking and whatnot, you shouldn't need much else. But a big knife can replace a hatchet if you understand its limitations, and provides you with a better close-quarters weapon.
>>
>>27769686
>hatchet and SAK
My preferred combo as well, unless I'm going somewhere where wood processing is emergency only (above tree-line national park areas), in which case the hatchet is substituted for a lighter but less effective trowel/saw/stake.

Nowadays, other than >>27767440, large knives aren't really an optimal choice unless it's literally the only thing you can bring, or if it's carried in lieu of other more complex or heavier options as an emergency tool. Even if you specifically need a weapon, you would probably still be served better with a hatchet and a firearm.
>>

>>
>>27770080
the Svord Von Tempsky bowie is a solid buy. Around $180 for just about custom build
>>
>>27767369
Ultimately it depends on the task you intend to use the knife for.
For " bowie" style clip point (OP pick) is a general purpose outdoor knife, with a fine tip that is not particularly strong and a great overall cutting edge length.

Good for most outdoor tasks short of "batoning" wood (depending on its thickness and grind), or prying.
Making it great for casual camping trips, for fairly useless to survivalist types.

Machetes are fairly light and thin, can be used for cutting grass, vines and small branches and for fairly basic cutting tasks.
A kukri is also good for all the above, although its design and weight distribution means it can also be used as a makeshift axe, so it is isn't limited to small branches, but likewise it is heavier, so not ideal for cutting vines in your path for hours on a deep jungle trip.

Folding knives are flimsy and really not ideal for even moderate intensity outdoors tasks, with tasks such as cutting cardboard and food preparation being their main purpose, also useful as lightweight utility tool for fishing or as a stopgap for hunting small game if you make sure to clean it.
Due to their significantly smaller and thinner blades they are prone to dulling quickly or not being able to generate enough leverage in any woodcutting tasks, with steel framelock knives being the only kind you should dare to even attempt this with, a backlock or liner lock would be more prone to weakness depending on design.

An axe is an awesome tool with its place firmly secure as an outdoor tool, depending on the size of the axe, usually determined by your method of transport, "Gransfors Bruk" of Sweden typically acknowledged as the highest quality axes/hatchets you can get (for a price), not that there is anything wrong with the $10 hardware store ones if you make sure to sharpen it before your trip outdoors.

Because of the convex edges of an axes grind, its edge can take a LOT more abuse than anything else in regards to chopping,

Big knives are better than axes for many people in woods areas that are travelling for fun.

They're lighter and are like thicker machetes.

In the end it comes down to personal preference, but in situations like in those tv shows when you're naked, a big ass knife is the way to go.

Other than that, just for fun.

I personally dont need almost anything while outdoors, given how in my country it is extremely ilegal to make fires, but I carry the knives I want for fun and because I love them.

In the end it all comes down to that.

>In Rainer v. State, Mr. Rainer was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon for having a large hunting knife concealed on his person when he was arrested at a lounge for failing to appear in Court the Texas Appellate Court held that blade was defined in the dictionary as the cutting part of a knife, not the sharpened part. I carry a sturdy & sharp folding knife when I'm at the bar with the pistol hidden in the car's lock-box that is screwed into the bottom of my drivers seat (since in my state you can't have a gun on person in a public place after any liquor has touched your lips). Have never even been tempted to grab a hold of it in preparation but it has come in handy for practical applications like helping the bartender open something up. If I was a hunter or did more outdoor activities though I would get myself a real knife like the ones that have been posted but I don't need one for my suburban / urban existence.

For $25 you literally can't go wrong. I used to have a $25 knife with a 12 inch blade and it wasn't half as nice as this.

The tang is thick as fuck, too.

This is probably the ONLY bowie knife you'd want to take with you in the woods to chop wood, throw into trees etc... "Pure steel" is an alloy. Steel in its simplest form is iron+carbon. I can't help but think that you're just Googling stuff on the fly.

No shit, it's STAINLESS STEEL. That's why I've used the words STAINLESS STEEL to refer to the blade. That's why the blade says STAINLESS STEEL on it.

>It's Pakistani steel but it's not exactly shit steel.

At this point I'm inclined to ask you to elaborate.

And knives least of all. How can you expect people who neither use their knives seriously, nor sharpen them to know ANYTHING about the subject? Their knowledge extends to which knives are prettier and fulfil their operator fantasies better.

That looks fucking awful. Are you sure this isn't Frost Cutlery?
>>
Speaking of big knives I'm looking for something to pair with my esee4, should I go with a 7-8in blade or just get a damn Junglas?
>>
>>27781557
Just get a damn Junglas.

Thanks mang, they are pretty badass.

google image search brings up nothing, only comment' "The image is no longer available or is not publicly accessible."

Some fag that some Mexican cartel killed, IIRC.

That little more is still +60% more. With a little more you can buy TWO MTechs.
>>
>>27771011
It's like the perfect machete-sword, until one day the unusual hardness of the blade comes back to bite its own ass and you notice a crack on your blade.

And then it breaks.
>>
>>27781422
This. You would literally have better luck asking /out/ or /ck/ about using and maintaining knives.
>>
>>27787904
I don't carry two knives with me so if one gets broken I'll be shit out of luck until I get home. Which is fine because I always have a hatchet with me but it would be annoying.
>>
>>27767369
it can do a decent job of what both of those things do really well at 60% of the weight of both of those items...

Flimsy unbalanced piece of shit.
>>

Beautiful blade finish, they're all black normally
How do I make mine look nice like that?
>>
>>27789913
I'd say just short of decent, I just carry the weight instead of dealing with batoning, which is fine for some people but I can't be bothered to find a chunk of wood to beat against a knife at the end of a long hike.

This is from someone who stubbornly stuck with it for a year because there has to be SOMETHING that would make it worth the trouble and frankly, I couldn't find it.

>With a little more you can buy TWO MTechs.

I'd rather eat a candy bar than two turds.
>>
>>27791672
Except a more accurate comparison would be two tasty candy bars versus one only slightly tastier candy bar.
>>
>>27791694
>Implying the Mtechs are good

I'd say a better comparison would be a single good candy bar vs. 2 packs or Necco wafers.
>>
>>27791789
Have you ever used one? And I mean MTech's fixed blade stuff, not the folder shit.

Hey, machete guys, what's wrong with this baby? It's 20 bucks, made in 'Murica, and appears to do big sharp piece of metal stuff properly. Why should I throw any more money at a machete?
>>
>>27791803
Yes, and they're standard Chinese 440. IIRC they don't even specify which 440, which makes me think a.

You can put an edge on them and use them in ways that don't stress the knife, but that isn't saying much. Buying a big knife in 440 and using it for big knife tasks will likely net you a broken knife. It's not like it really matters if the knife is just for stabbing people, opening boxes, or general fucking around, but putting stainless steel to wood is generally a bad idea.

Even if the knife is just for dickery and showing off on the internet I don't see why you wouldn't spend another $10 and buy the better product.
>>
>>27792009
So did yours break or did you never torture-test it?
It's cheap after all.
>>
>>27767470
Fuck off troll
>>
>>27792270
You came to this thread just to slowpoke reply to that obvious bait? Wow.
>>
>>27792263
Never had the chance to break, some fag stole it.

Had some major chips in the blade though, and not from things that should chip a knife.
>>
>>27792491
Which knife model exactly?
>>
>>27792497
I don't remember, I think it was some Kabar-esque thing that I bought at a gun show.

Thanks for this, large knives can be useful and versatile but I do agree that you're better off overall with a hatchet/pack-ax and smaller fixed blade combo.

People like big knives because there is an element of making yourself feel as though you are outfitted as an adventurer. Fun, as you put it. There is nothing wrong with that, people might give you a side-long glance because of the big knife you are toting. If you're being friendly though and not giving them a reason too, It's their fault and they are no better then people who act the same way towards people who open-carry guns.

People get defensive about having fun with carrying and using big knives because the element of fun and adventure has a dark-side. A big knife is like a sword for some and they fantasize about slaying dragons. Nothing wrong with having thoughts like that and I think everyone does on some level. Especially if you keep self-awareness and perspective but It's easily stigmatized, probably because people don't want to admit that they have the same kind of thoughts so they ridicule people who are open about it in some way.
