There are some, but I doubt there would be. You are talking about fragments travelling at 2x the speed of sound or faster when they hit the plane. The holes in the planes they would create would be much large than their actual shape.

Hate to sound tinfoil but the mnost telling part of this is teh USAF not showing satellite data or imagery of this "rebel" BUK system. Ukraine and the Russian border was watched extremely closely. You'd think all the tanks our satellites saw crossing into Ukraine would also spot the BUK that launched and it's missing missle. Add into that USAF satellites that are made to detect rocket launches and artillery fire and it's clear there are proofs that the US doesn't want to disclose.

We got reports that it was either the Ukrainian air force which was operating in the area, or, it was a BUK which was well within Ukrainian lines. Well the altitude they were flying at was safe from MANPADS (which stop being useful around 15k ft), but there's no plane that can fly high enough to avoid a Buk.

Effectiveness implies forethought. Any forethought at all would reveal that there was no controlled flight possible on that aircraft, followed by a lack of need for the oxygen mask, as they would descend more than fast enough to obviate the need. The oxygen mask is for when you need to stay at and then slowly descend from 30k feet. If you're dropping like a stone, the air is just fine to keep you conscious long before you pass out (remember, they have climbed Everest without oxygen).

The point of the report was only to figure out what downed the plane. They specifically avoided anything that could be construed as assigning blame because something with the laws means that the crash investigators aren't allowed to determine who was actually at fault. Assigning the blame is up to whoever is in charge of the criminal investigation.
