Well I just looked it up, and apparently the bolt slides up and down, rather than back and forth. Because the bolt cannot extract and shit though, the extractor and ejector are located in a separate assembly that strips the cartridge from the magazine, moves out of the way of the bolt, then removes the cartridge from the chamber after firing and the bolt moves out of the way.

It's not meant to look like wood, it's a similar material to what Bakelite magazines are made of (not actually Bakelite). The ugliness is part of the charm IMO.
