As for your tactics question, I use a combination of ambush and choke points. aka block them from their usual escape route to get them out of the brush so you can have a throw at them.

I got charged with two counts of animal abuse and some other minor stuff. They didn't understand that this really is a more ethical way of hunting no matter how much I tried explaining it.
Last time I changed the strings on my bass guitar, I weaved 'em into a braid, with the ball ends free and the "grip" improvised in epoxy and tape, like a flagrum whip made of steel. Haven't tried it on anyone yet but I bet this shit hurts.

The idea behind this trap is that the tree branches guide the animal to the trip wire and the machete decapitates the rabbit.
The problem I had was timing, out of the three times I got a rabbit with this trap twice it severed the spine and not the head. It's not strong enough to cut clean through in the middle of the spine but it will decapitate a rabbit.
I usually had small fences around the thing to act as a sort of a funnel, guiding the rabbit.
This trap was just the back-up plan, in case I didn't get the rabbit with my bat. I used a rubber bicycle tire as the "spring".
I took the trap down after my neighbors pet pig got killed in it (and it initiated the police investigation and all that shit). I'll probably put it back up again in the winter, but this time I won't just leave it loaded like that.

Yes, I have dug holes and put sharpened thin rebars on the bottom. Didn't function too well because the rebars punctured the rabbit a little too well and it ripped itself apart in panic (I wasn't there to finish it off). So it wasn't as ethical or humane, and to me humane killing is the most important part. Also the meat tasted bad after the guts had been punctured.
I have set up traps similar to the machete trap with just a board with nails that strikes the rabbit in the face area. They are effective but miss a lot for some reason. Putting an apple right in front of the board will make sure that the rabbit is just in the right place but even then it's 50/50.

Something an old ex-con taught me to do is take a length of stiff, strong spring, like a screen door, and coat all but the last two inches in plaster. Then you melt some lead, and pour it into a mold like a metal measuring cup. Dip the non plastered end of the spring in the lead, let it cool. Drip water on the plastered part, the plaster slows down the water to help keep the temper proper, else the metal will get too hard. Wrap the entire thing up in tape. Apply with vigor to skulls.

Actually the spider reference is spot on as I constructed the nets around my house and the woods and put a tense fishing line in each net so that if there was eny movement on the net I'd feel it. I pulled all the lines to my front yard and sat there with the lines in my hands (I usually meditated). I copied the technique from spiders after watching nature documentaries. But it was a lot of work and as I said i didn't like the idea of animals just strangling there before I got there to finish them off.

The bullet does things near instantaneously and if you are weak in the arm or swinging awkwardly the thing you are trying to hit will take a few strokes. There's a larger margin of error and in my opinion it's just plain brutal. The animal isn't going to hear the shot if you do it right, but even if you swing like a champ, the things still going to be wrought with fear. How you chose to hunt is your business but I think it's just plain deplorable and I certainly wouldn't want to be associated with you.
