Hey k, I got my plate carrier in this week so I guess let's have a gear thread?

I know it's supposed to be worn high but to do that I have the straps tightened pretty much all the way; is this right? Also the side buckles are tightened to the max but that makes it hard to put on.
Any tips? It's a shellback banshee btw

Also why are the side clips held on by Velcro tabs?

I don't remember what pack that is, but give me a sec while I look it up.

>>24317882
Right now it sits high enough. They might hang a little when you finally get plates in, but probably not too much where you need to worry about it.
Also, get ceramics. Don't strap pot metal to yourself. Use something that was actually designed for ballistic protection not an improvised method with less protection.

No, the cheapest level IVs ($145) are ceramic. AR500 steel plates with 1/3rd the thickness weigh comparably. There is no way those are steel, unless it's some fucking magic.

That being said, I have my doubts about their ability to survive multiple hits. Some of the extremely cheap ceramic plates seem to practically fall apart once shot.

>What do you guys use this gear for?

Even though I'm not in a line of work where shooting people is a regular occurrence anymore (though that might change again in the future for me) I still see the value in being technically and tactically proficient with firearms as well as still take pleasure in shooting. I don't get nearly as much enjoyment out of just standing/sitting/laying on a firing line and blasting away as I do practicing shooting like my life or the life of someone else depends on it. Shooting very fast and very accurately in both gear and everyday carry is a great affirmation that I can protect myself and others effectively. Will I ever have to again? Maybe, maybe not, but I have fun with it so it's really no burden to put in the time and be good at it.

Additionally, I live in Minneapolis and given what went down in Paris as well as ISIS activity in my city I like having some .mil kit around.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/minneapolis-men-charged-isis/story?id=27173051

And this isn't recent either, FBI has been scooping terrorists very consistently in this city https://www.google.com/search?q=minneapolis+isis&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

>with the exception of the US Marines and certain SF guys no military uses plate carriers over body armour.

You're wrong, myself and the active duty units I was attached to either wore issued Magnum Plate Carriers or bought our own. I only knew a small handful of people who wore the IOTV.

>Is the difference purely kevlar to stop spalling and larger covered area?

Plate carriers protect the bare minimum but at a high level; the thoracic cavity from the most likely angles of penetration. IOTVs/IBAs protect the whole torso.

It's either going to be a condor or an off brand plate carrier to be honest. Only way to keep the costs down.

Well, all I would be using from the package would be the gloves and the plate carrier, since I have everything else. Hell, I haven't even had my plates in a carrier for two years. Just never thought I'd really need them and wanted to force myself to think low-profile. But that would be a great starter kit for lots of people. I would try testing the idea before investing a lot. Maybe thread?
>>
>>24320061
It's Condor, it's already not quite high quality.

I don't actually know if people are just being snobby at them or if the Condor carriers actually fall apart or not. Either way, it seems like a better idea to buy something higher quality and American made that won't fall apart.

The bag as a 3.3 star out of 500 reviews on Amazon. It might not survive a year long deployment in Shitcanistan but it'll hold up in most midterm situations.

From what I've read Condor is like /k/mart to Walmart. Not as well known or established, maybe not as high quality, but the best quality for the price. But I haven't purchased them yet. I intend to give everything a solid work through so I can put my 2cents in before trying to coerce you guys to buy them.

>>24320174
Plates would be an additional $130. That's for two AR500 flat 10inx12in at retail cost with 0% markup. I realize that a lot of /k/ are poorfags, myself included, so I'm trying to put together cheap but decent quality kits that Collegefag anon can afford.

Also putting together some other stuff.

>STALKER Kits

etc

Only have the Ecologist set up at the moment. Comes with an NBC Suit (hood, gloves, boots), Gas Mask, Radiation detection sticker, two multi-tool gadgets (compass, magnifying glass, knife, whistle, thermometer) Potassium Iodide pills (thyroid blockers to reduce radiation absorbtion), ruck sack, rain proof note pad.

It's kind of a STALKER gimmick, but everything included is fully functional.

Probably price it at about $65.00

Nowadays TCCC guidelines say 2-3 inches above, but recommends placing the tourniquet as proximally as possible if the exact location of the wound is unclear. Seeing as in combat it's not super easy to locate the wound precisely through a soldier's garments, this seems like a better approach. This also helps in that it's effective even if an artery is completely severed and it retracts up the limb.

I need to set aside some money and actually get my 'personal' plates.

I'll be selling my AR pretty soon and I'll get something else once I get back to the mainland. I'll be getting a new set of mag pouches when I pick my next rifle.

As for everyone with IFAK's, keep in mind a lot of that stuff has expiration dates and won't function properly if expired (Quik-Clot won't clot. The lube in the NFA gets nasty as fuck. Just check your shit).

For the people with ceramic plates, be careful with them. Dropping them on hard surfaces can reduce their effectiveness or break them.
>>24318607
Even the more expensive ceramic plates aren't designed to take multiple hits, they are designed to take one or two big ones. Also, multiple hits will turn your insides into goo anyway. There isn't penetration, but the energy is still dispersed into your chest.
>>
>>24320583
>Email me if you have my address, I will be first to buy some AR500s from you. Been wanting to check those out. Even if I hate them the weight will be good for running.

Will do. Honestly AR500s are the cheapest plates I can find on the market that I'd feel comfortable wearing. I wouldn't offer anything to /k/ that I wouldn't operate in myself. Though I might shell out the extra $35 ea for the trauma pads to have a few less broken ribs from a high caliber shot. Even without the plates are rated to keep you alive.

Also, I figure I could order a several and save /k/ the convenience of not having to wait the 10week lead time that the manufacturer requires.

>>24320597

Farsightedness, astigmatism, and a lazy eye. It's mostly the farsightedness that kills iron sights for me. Well now I feel foolish. I hadn't realized that clicking on individual plate carrier models brings up the color selection. Thank you anon. After I start off with the "Basic Operator Kits" and the "STALKER Kits" I'd be happy to do "Standard Operator Kits" with the higher quality/cost Beez plate carrier.

I think most of /k/ has one or two of them. Not really useful against guns but I guess if you want to protect people against shrapnel they can be a life saver.

What shoulder pads do you guys suggest. I run ar500 plates and my MARZ shoulder pads are alright. I've heard the HSGI ones are nice but I was looking at the First Spear pads.

>>24322097

What?

Please don't tell me you spent $140 on a flecktarn kevlar vest.
>>
>>24322128
Nope but that's what I've seen offered, not looking too hard.
>>
>>24322209
Used to be able to get them on the /k/ store for like $30, and my local surplus has them for $60

they're drying up.

Nice dubs.

The Kits should be set and ready to go by Mid February. nuggetfest.com/store and nuggetfest.com/forum will have updates.

Anyone else put yoga mat behind their plates and in their shoulder straps? Too comfy.

Does anyone have any kind of signaling device? I always thought that a flare gun may come in handy

On their rig, I should say.

That camo mismatch and secondary flag patch are upsetting me and I don't know why. Also the mags should be put in order and why is there cord on just one pocket?
>>
>>24321951

If you could get a Standard Kit together for me around the same time you do the basic ones I'd happily pay you a few shekels extra for the trouble. I like the look of the Beez carriers a little bit better and they have a bit more variety which is nice.

why do you guys have these ?
