Secondary Education major in the US here, our teachers are shit but for a different reason. In Uni you have to maintain a 3.0 GPA or you risk getting kicked out of the program and you need a 3.0 to a 3.5 in every course or you don't get credit toward your teaching certificate. This counts for teachable minor credits as well.
The problem is with retarded public school policies (adopting tenure like a uni, trading bad teachers among schools, etc) that make it impossible for bad teachers to be fired or punished. In many inner-city schools this is further exacerbated by the stupid huge numbers of students and aging facilities and funds. The abysmal state of teaching in the US is also partly due to shit like common core and state teaching standards that basically control what information teachers can teach and how they must teach it, meaning that teachers are sometimes forced into teaching bullshit and there is nothing they can do about it.
tl;dr, public school in the states is fucked by bad policies not bad teacher education.

Yeah, our public schools have the same kind of tenure a university has. You can actually find accounts/pictures of tenured teachers reading a book or newspaper at their desk while the students just sit there with no assignment. There is literally no accountability if you have tenure so a lot of disillusioned teachers get away with serious bullshit. Public schools also trade bad teachers around to try and get better ones but it usually just makes the spread of bad teachers worse. It also leads to student "tracking," a system that basically leads to students being labeled as important or not important and given teachers who are all good at their job or all terrible.
Common core is a new curriculum being rolled out on a national level, but it is pants-on-head retarded. Most of the curriculum in CC is blatantly wrong or simplified, and in some cases (such as math) overly complicated. There are a lot of politics shoved into it too. The idea is to make shit simple so inner-city or poorly educated kids can pass tests as well as well educated kids without real understanding. Teachers in public schools in the US are basically told everything they can say/do in the classroom without any ability to innovate, or try and be a better teacher, etc.

In my Sophomore year before I left school to begin homeschooling I was bullied. There was actually a conference at my university (which is liberal as fuck btw) on how they should teach university level math to students who were raised on common core. They pretty much concluded that they just need to re-teach them math from a clean slate because CC is so fucked.

90% of the people who are involved in the public school system in the US and probably in most other countries are power-starved social cases, I personally can't wait to be an obnoxious helicopter parent that blows up at my kids teachers over every little perceived slight.

Like crooked cops, the teachers and administrators are never punished for their illegal actions and it costs the schools nothing to settle the case, as they're using tax payer dollars for the pay-outs. Meanwhile, parents who hear about this story get all freaked out and prevent their kids from becoming involved in shooting sports.
