The warhammer wiki claims the bolter has tremendous recoil that would rip a normal human's arm out of his socket. But that doesn't make sense. It's a gyrojet weapon that uses a small bit of conventional powder to push the bolt out of the barrel before the rockets kick in. There's no way that small ammount of conventional powder would make it literally kick like a mule.
>>
Plenty of ordinary humans use Bolters in the WH40k universe, the problem is fan wank and authors contradicting each other.

Bolters use a two-stage propellant that basically shoots it out with a normal powder load before some rockets activate to speed it up faster.

Depends on who is writing the article/stats/book, lots of 40k contradicts itself, like some saying the Lasgun is as powerful as a modern .50bmg while stats say it is the same as a 5.56 round. Same with Leman Russ tanks being able to shrug off many attacks despite having thinner armor than WW1 tanks.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that Marines and normal humans fire their bolters differently.

Marines just ignite the rocket in the bolter.

Humans have to ignite the rocket once it's clear of the barrel, making aiming it kind of odd because the projectile changes speed mid flight.

Have absolutely no idea where I read that though, brb, looking through my codex and rulebook.

I thought Bolters for space marines were just different guns entirely?
I know humans use really small versions or laser weapons.

I wonder what kicks more...An Ork Shoota, or an Imperium made Bolter.
>>
>>23346800
I dunno actually, ask OP, maybe he's just curious regarding Warham tech vs actual gyrojet gun.
>>
Marine Bolters would break a humans arm. There are marine bolters and human bolters.
>>
>>23346811
There are different kinds of bolter, some commissar and strong IG members actually use them without any physical enhancement done to themselves because they are made smaller.
>>
>>23346813
OP here. It just struck me as odd that one paragraph mentions massive recoil and the next goes on to say that it only has enough powder to clear the barrel. The firing sequence is "click-boop-WHOOSH." Since the super crazy rocket isn't engaging until after the bolt has left the bolter, it having heavy recoil doesn't make sense.
>>
>>23346534
An astartes bolter is much larger than those issued to standard humans. Remember the kick charge doesn't just get the projectile out of the barrel, it makes it lethal out of the barrel. And with a round that size that's gonna take a decent amount of force.

>>
>>23346856
Maybe this guy>>23346856 is right, and it's about when the rockets start lighting themselves off the barrel that are dangerous, not the internal recoil, shit's full auto after all, that's a lot of small rockets.
>>
You have to remember this shit is written by Brits. They are unlikely to know anything about firearms, and probably wouldn't care even if they did because lolscifi.

They COULD spend time researching shit to try and please gun nerds, but:
1-it's not possible, nerds will always find details to bitch about. That's what we do, mostly for the sheer enjoyment of feeling smart when pointing out inconsistencies and arguing about them.
2-they would need to do extensive research about a lot of other shit because every field has its nerds. Ever watched a hospital drama with someone who actually works in a hospital? They are just like us and nitpick everything.

What I'm trying to say is that every work of fiction has to take some degree of liberty regarding realism, it's just a matter of balance. And just because something is absolutely realistic doesn't mean it's good/enjoyable in itself (that is where the storywriting nerds come in and wreck your shit).
>>

>>
>>23346629
man, this made me lol
>>
>>23346629
I'm pretty sure I've read that some where too.

Spes Mehrines just blast that shit full force in the barrel which makes it have more recoil than my dick, and Imperial Guard use the occasional Bolt Pistol in some alt-fire mode where the pistol doesn't fly the fuck out of their hand on the first shot by lobbing the shell a little bit with just the initial charge before the rockets fling it forward.

I don't think any guardsmen really have access to full on Bolters, just pistols for the most part except for the occasional outlier, but I've been out of 40k for a really long time now.

Very brief excerpt of space marine abilities and physiology.
>The surgical process takes a great deal of time. The recruit receives implants, along with chemical- and hypnotherapy, and training necessary for allowing the functioning and development of the implanted organs. The implants transform their bodies and minds and give them inhuman abilities - making them capable of spitting acidic venom, absorbing the memories of the dead by eating their flesh, darkening their skin to protect it from radiation, and operating for long periods without sleep by switching off parts of their brains at a time. After this implantation process and the associated training, the recruit becomes an "initiate".
>>
>>23347207
Salamanders have wives and kids iirc
>>
>Secondary Heart (The Maintainer) - This is the first and least difficult implant to install. The Secondary Heart increases blood supply and pumping capacity and is capable of taking over entirely should the primary heart fail. It may also pump steroids and adrenaline into the first, primary heart to give the Astartes an extra "rush" of energy on the battlefield.
Ossmodula (The Ironheart) - This implant strengthens and greatly accelerates the growth of the skeleton of a Space Marine by inducing his bones to absorb a ceramic-based mineral administered in every Astartes Neophyte's diet. Within two years after the surgery, the Space Marine's skeleton will be larger and exponentially stronger than a normal man's with growth having topped out at around 7-7.5 feet in height with an equivalent amount of skeleto-muscular mass. An Astartes' rib cage will also be fused into a solid bone plate to provide greater protection from injury for the internal organs.
Biscopea (The Forge of Strength) - Implanted into the chest cavity, this implant massively bolsters skeletomuscular development and muscle fiber density throughout the Astartes' body by unleashing a wave of human growth hormones. This gene-seed organ is commonly implanted at the same time as the Ossmodula since it is necessary to successfully regulate the Ossmodula's hormonal secretions and it will also regulate the hormonal changes caused to the new Astartes' body by many of the other gene-seed implants.
Haemastamen (The Blood Maker) - Implanted into a main blood vessel like the aorta, femoral artery or the vena cava, the Haemastamen alters an Astartes' blood's biochemical composition to carry oxygen and nutrients more efficiently. The actions of the Haemastamen turn a Space Marine's blood a brighter shade of red than that of normal humans because of its greatly increased oxygen-carrying capacity. It also acts to biochemically regulate the actions of the 2nd and 3rd gene-seed implants, the Ossmodula and Biscopea.

But like, if you don't go undivided you get fucked 7 different ways.

You go Khorne, you're slowly going nuts and all you want to do is fuck shit up. You're always on the verge of straight up losing your mind and going Bersker-mode

You go Slaanesh, you're gonna have organs and shit mutate all over you so you can feel more and more sensations until you basically just want to sit there slicing yourself up because the pain is so good.

You go Nurgle to rot into a zombie and you can't even exist without the armor holding your goo inside of it. You can't feel anything. You eat a bolter to the face, blows half of your head off, but you don't care. Don't even notice it's gone.

You go Tzeentch and you have a damn good chance of blowing your own head apart from trying to do some psychic shit. If he particularly likes you your body's going to mutate to hell where your penis turns into a crab claw that spews out warp flame and just happens to have exquisite handwriting so you let it do all of your paperwork.

Pic HIGHLY related.

Remember, 99% of the people who work for Games Workshop in the head office actually dreaming up all of this shit, are sci-fi nerds from Nottingham who have never touched a real firearm, nevermind fired one. They are also writing for a ridiculously over the top grimdark sci-fi action setting that was originally little more than a joke spin off of another popular rules system with a shitload of sci-fi references and in-jokes that now have to be ironed now that everything has to be taken "seriously".

Also, there are dozens of writers, all trying to make their own stories more dramatic and exciting, whilst also bigging up whichever side happens to be the protagonist of their story.

Which is why sometimes Lasguns are death dealing super weapons that rip Power Armour to shreds, while other times it's a useless flashlight that barely scratches the pimples on a Gretchins nose, sometime within the same story if the situation calls for it.
